Oreichthys elianae is a 2026-described hi-fin barb from the Tsurang River, a tributary within the Ganga-Brahmaputra basin in Nagaland, northeast India. It was described alongside a new sisorid catfish, Glyptothorax sentimereni, from the same expedition into the state's hill-country streams, and is separated from its congeners by a distinctive scale count, caudal-fin spot and reddish fins. Like other Oreichthys, it is a small cyprinid of hillstream margins rather than open water, and beyond its type locality and formal description, little else has yet been documented for the species.

Taxonomy & naming

Oreichthys elianae was described in 2026 by Jayasimhan Praveenraj (ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Andaman and Nicobar Islands) and Balaji Vijayakrishnan (independent researcher, Mumbai), published in Zootaxa 5763 (2): 255–267 alongside a second new species from the same Nagaland fieldwork, the sisorid catfish Glyptothorax sentimereni. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Oreichthys elianae as the valid, currently accepted name, placed in the family Cyprinidae, subfamily Smiliogastrinae. No other Oreichthys species is yet present in this atlas's barbs coverage, so the species is filed under the general "Indian & Sri Lankan barbs" group used for South Asian cyprinids pending fuller coverage of the genus.

The holotype (ZSI/APRC V/P 2565) and paratypes (CIARI FF-119; ZSI/APRC V/P 2566) were collected from the Tsurang River at Medemyim Village, Mokochung District, Nagaland, at 26°29'50.7"N, 94°21'07.1"E. Per the published abstract, the new species is distinguished from its Oreichthys congeners by a combination of characters: 19+1 scales (5 of them pored) in the longitudinal series, ½3/1/2½ scales in transverse row, 9 predorsal scales, 14–15 pores on the cheek, a black spot at the caudal-fin base, and reddish fins. The full text of the description, including its complete character comparisons and any additional diagnostic detail, was not accessible for this article, so these specifics are reported as given in the published abstract rather than the complete original description.

Morphology

No full morphological description beyond the diagnosis was accessible for this article. The abstract's diagnostic combination — 19+1 longitudinal scales, ½3/1/2½ transverse scale formula, 9 predorsal scales, 14–15 cheek pores, a black spot on the caudal-fin base and reddish fins — is consistent with the small, laterally compressed body typical of Oreichthys, a genus of tiny South Asian cyprinids sometimes called hi-fin barbs for the tall, sail-like dorsal fin several species show in breeding males. No standard-length measurement was reported in the material accessible for this article; congeners in the genus are consistently small, most maturing under 1.2 in SL — a genus-level generality, not a measurement for this species specifically.

Habitat

Oreichthys elianae is known only from its type locality, the Tsurang River at Medemyim Village in Mokochung District, Nagaland, within the Ganga-Brahmaputra River basin of northeast India. This is hill-country stream habitat in the eastern Himalayan foothills, a region that has yielded a steady run of newly described small cyprinids and catfishes in recent years, including the sisorid Glyptothorax sentimereni described in the same paper.

No water-chemistry data were reported in the material accessible for this article. Other Oreichthys species typically occupy slow, vegetated margins and pools of small forest streams — a genus-level generality, not a specific observation for this species.

Feeding

No feeding observations have been documented for Oreichthys elianae. Like other small Oreichthys, it is presumed to be a micropredator/omnivore, taking zooplankton, small aquatic invertebrates and algae from among vegetation and leaf litter in slow stream margins — a genus-level generality rather than a species-specific record.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been recorded for Oreichthys elianae. The species' reddish fins, noted as part of its diagnosis, are consistent with the breeding coloration many male Oreichthys display, but no dimorphism or courtship account specific to this species is available in the material accessible for this article.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented for Oreichthys elianae, either in the wild or in captivity. Other small Oreichthys kept in the aquarium trade are egg-scattering, non-guarding spawners typical of small barbs, but this is a genus-level generality; no protocol specific to O. elianae exists.

In the aquarium

Oreichthys elianae has not been reported in the aquarium trade; it is known only from its scientific type series. Some congeners, notably Oreichthys cosuatis, do circulate as small, peaceful nano-aquarium barbs, so if this species were ever exported it would likely be kept in similar fashion — soft, gently flowing water, fine planting and other small, non-aggressive tankmates — but this is a genus-level expectation, not documented husbandry for O. elianae itself. At present, no care or captive data exist for this species.

Conservation

Oreichthys elianae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated, as expected for a species described in 2026. It is currently known only from its type locality on the Tsurang River in Nagaland's Ganga-Brahmaputra basin.

Northeast India's hill streams face pressure from small-scale hydropower, deforestation and agricultural runoff, common threats across the region's freshwater fish diversity, though no species-specific threat assessment has been carried out for O. elianae.
