Taxonomy & naming
Smith described the species in 1933 from Ban Ang in Chantaburi Province, southeastern Thailand. The trade also sells it as Oreichthys cf. parvus, so some stock may be a different small Oreichthys. The two store listings are treated here as one species. Oreichthys is a small genus of dwarf cyprinids.
Morphology
Oreichthys are very small, slender barbs. FishBase gives this species a maximum of 1 in SL; colour has not been described in the sources the atlas uses.
Habitat
FishBase describes it as living in hill streams, usually in clear, slow-flowing water, and as apparently widely distributed but overlooked because of its small size. The range runs from southeastern Thailand through the northern Malay Peninsula to the Mekong basin in Laos and Thailand. Water parameters have not been published.
Feeding
Oreichthys take small invertebrates and plankton, and graze some algae. The diet of this species has not been described separately.
Mating
Mating behaviour has not been described.
Breeding
Captive breeding has not been documented.
In the aquarium
Treat it as a nano fish: a planted tank with gentle flow, a group of six or more, tiny live or frozen foods and fine dry foods, and peaceful small tankmates only. Care notes come from the genus.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List category is Data Deficient, assessed in 2011. That means there is too little information to judge extinction risk. Threats have not been described.
