Chitala borneensis, the Borneo featherback, is a blade-bodied knifefish from the rivers of Sundaland — Sumatra, Borneo and the Malay Peninsula — and a small member of one of the aquarium hobby's most ancient fish lineages, the bonytongues (order Osteoglossiformes), named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against the roof of the mouth. It belongs to the Old World family Notopteridae, the true featherback knifefishes, which are only distantly related to — and resemble purely by convergence — the New World electric knifefishes of order Gymnotiformes. A nocturnal ambush predator with a long, ribbon-like anal fin that drives its slow, undulating swim, it is one of the smaller Chitala, topping out around 35–40 cm against the metre-long bulk of its giant relatives, and it remains rare and little-documented in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Chitala borneensis was described by the Dutch-Indies ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1851; the parentheses around the authority show it was originally placed in a different genus before later workers moved it into Chitala. It belongs to the family Notopteridae — also erected by Bleeker in 1851 — the Old World featherback knifefishes of Africa and South/Southeast Asia. Along with the rest of the order Osteoglossiformes, Notopteridae sits among the oldest surviving branches of the teleost fishes, a scattered, deep-time radiation whose living members turn up on four continents; the order's name comes from a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth. Despite a superficially similar body plan, Chitala and its Old World relatives are not close kin of the New World electric knifefishes (order Gymnotiformes, covered separately at /knifefishes) — the blade-bodied, ribbon-finned form evolved independently in both groups.

The type locality is Sambas, in West Kalimantan on the Indonesian side of Borneo, and the species epithet borneensis is straightforward Latin for "of Borneo." For decades C. borneensis was treated as a synonym or variant of the wide-ranging giant featherback, Chitala lopis; subsequent genetic and morphological work split the lopis complex into three distinct species — C. lopis proper, the high-backed C. hypselonotus, and C. borneensis — with borneensis now recognised as the valid name for the Bornean population centred on Sarawak, Sambas and the Barito basin. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes both currently accept it as a valid, distinct species.

Morphology

Like its relatives, Chitala borneensis has the unmistakable knifefish silhouette: a deep, laterally compressed, blade-shaped body tapering to a point at the tail, with a long, continuous anal fin that runs most of the length of the underside and fuses seamlessly into the caudal fin. The dorsal fin is reduced to a small, forward-set flag, and propulsion comes almost entirely from an undulating wave passed along the anal fin, which lets the fish hover, hang motionless, and glide forward and backward with equal ease — a slow, ghostly swimming style rather than the burst-and-glide typical of most fish.

The body is silvery to olive-brown, generally plainer than the bold ocellated flank spots of its more famous relative Chitala ornata, the clown knifefish. FishBase gives a maximum standard length of 15.5 in, and aquarium references describe adults reaching roughly 13.8–15.7 in — a modest size within the genus, well short of the near-metre totals reached by the giant featherback C. lopis and the clown knife C. ornata. Like other notopterids it is a facultative air-breather, gulping air at the surface via a highly vascularised swimbladder that doubles as an accessory breathing organ, an adaptation that lets it tolerate the warm, oxygen-poor swamp and floodplain water typical of its native rivers.

Habitat

Chitala borneensis is a fish of Sundaland — the Sunda Shelf river systems of Sumatra, Borneo and the Malay Peninsula that were repeatedly joined into a single lowland drainage during Pleistocene sea-level low stands. Confirmed records cluster on Borneo, in Sarawak, the Sambas district of West Kalimantan (the type locality), and the Barito River basin, with FishBase additionally listing Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula within its wider range.

It occupies slow-flowing, often turbid or tannin-stained lowland rivers, floodplain channels and swamp-forest waterways, generally soft and only mildly acidic to neutral (aquarium references put the species' preferred water at roughly pH 6.2–7.2 and 6–16 °dH). Like other Chitala it is a bottom- and cover-oriented fish, sheltering by day among submerged wood, roots and undercut banks and becoming active only after dark.

Feeding

Chitala borneensis is an obligate carnivore and an ambush predator — FishBase places it at a trophic level of roughly 3.5, consistent with a diet of fish and aquatic invertebrates taken opportunistically rather than pursued in open water. It hunts mostly by night, lying up in cover through the day and moving out to feed as light fades, using its blade-shaped body and undulating anal fin to hold position and strike with minimal disturbance.

In the aquarium it takes a predator's diet of whole fish, prawn, mussel and other meaty foods, and settles readily onto frozen and pelleted carnivore foods once acclimated; as with other nocturnal notopterids, feeding after the lights go out gets the best response. Its facultative air-breathing lets it forage in the low-oxygen backwaters and swamp margins where much of its natural prey concentrates.

Mating

Specific breeding observations for Chitala borneensis are scarce — it is rare in the aquarium trade and, as best documented, has not been reported spawning in captivity with any regularity, so the detail here is drawn from the well-studied pattern shared across the genus and its Old World relatives (Chitala ornata is the best-documented case, along with Notopterus). Notopterids are substrate spawners, not mouthbrooders or egg-scatterers: a pair selects a firm surface — submerged wood, a root, a rock face, or in captivity a length of pipe or a flowerpot — and the female deposits adhesive eggs directly onto it in a single layer.

Courtship in the genus involves the pair clearing and inspecting a chosen surface before spawning, with no elaborate nuptial colouration reported, and sexes are difficult to distinguish externally in Chitala generally. There is no documented external dimorphism specific to C. borneensis. Given how rarely the species is even kept, let alone bred, this account should be read as extrapolated from congeners rather than confirmed for borneensis itself.

Breeding

Following the genus pattern, once eggs are laid on a hard surface the male takes over sole custody of the clutch: he stations himself above it and fans it with his fins to keep water moving across the eggs, and guards the site aggressively against intruders — attentive, single-parent care rather than the shared or maternal mouthbrooding seen elsewhere in Osteoglossiformes (arowanas and arapaima). In the well-studied Chitala ornata, hatching and larval development take roughly a week under warm conditions, with the male continuing to guard the free-swimming fry for a period afterward.

There is no substantiated aquarium breeding account specifically for Chitala borneensis; its rarity in the trade and its cryptic, cover-dependent adult behaviour mean captive spawning has not been documented with the reliability available for its better-known congener C. ornata. Anyone attempting it would need a large, quiet, heavily furnished tank with a hard spawning surface and be prepared for a territorial, protective male.

In the aquarium

Chitala borneensis is a fish for the experienced, patient keeper rather than a beginner's centrepiece: it is genuinely rare in the trade, nocturnal and reclusive by day, and grows into a substantial predator that needs serious long-term accommodation — aquarium references specify a minimum of roughly 150 US gal for an adult, with generous floor space to match its elongated, laterally compressed shape. Reported lifespan is 8–12 years, so the commitment is a long one.

Water should stay soft to neutral and only mildly acidic (roughly pH 6.2–7.2, 6–16 °dH) and warm, at 72–77 °F, reflecting the turbid Sundaland rivers it comes from; strong filtration is essential, since a fish this size and this carnivorous produces a heavy bioload. Provide dense cover — driftwood, roots, overhangs — for daytime retreat, and keep lighting dim or shadowed; feeding and activity both pick up after dark. As with any large predatory fish, tankmates need to be too big to be swallowed, and this species is generally best kept singly rather than with conspecifics, which can turn aggressive toward one another in confined space.

Its facultative air-breathing means it will periodically rise to gulp air at the surface — normal behaviour, not a sign of distress — but it also means the tank needs clear surface access and a secure, well-fitted lid, since strong air-breathing fish can force gaps in loose covers over time.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Chitala borneensis as Least Concern, an assessment reached in 2019. It remains a valid, geographically restricted species mostly confirmed from Bornean drainages (Sarawak, Sambas/West Kalimantan, the Barito basin), with a broader range extending to Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula reported by FishBase.

Population-trend and threat data specific to this species are sparse — a common situation for Sundaland's rich but under-studied freshwater fish fauna, where deforestation, peat-swamp drainage and river modification are the region's general pressures on lowland and floodplain species. Its rarity in the aquarium trade suggests limited collection pressure from the hobby side; any conservation concern would be tied to the state of its native lowland river and swamp-forest habitat rather than to aquarium demand.
