Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrus bernhardi was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1926, from a specimen collected near Nairobi, Kenya. The species belongs to Mormyridae, the family of African weakly electric elephantnose fishes, within Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — a scattered, deep-time radiation of teleosts found today on four continents. Mormyrus is one of the larger genera in the family, holding several dozen species distinguished mainly by snout shape, fin proportions and electric organ discharge pattern, since many look similar to the eye.
The genus name Mormyrus comes from an old Greek word, mormyros, used by ancient writers for a Mediterranean sea fish unrelated to the African elephantnoses; early naturalists borrowed the name for this group of freshwater African fish and it has stuck ever since. The species epithet bernhardi honors R. P. Bernhard, who collected the type specimen. As with many mormyrids, individual species are difficult to separate by eye alone, and researchers increasingly rely on the pulse pattern of the electric organ discharge to confirm identifications.
Morphology
Mormyrus bernhardi has the elongated, laterally compressed body typical of its genus: a slender caudal peduncle, a deeply forked tail, and a single long dorsal fin set opposite a long anal fin near the rear of the body. The head carries a small mouth at the tip of an elongated, downward-curving snout — an arrangement different from the fleshy chin barbel, the schnauzenorgan, found in the related genus Gnathonemus. In Mormyrus the whole snout is drawn into a probing tube rather than carrying a separate chin appendage. The skin is naked, without scales on the head, and the eyes are small, consistent with a fish that relies on electrolocation more than vision.
FishBase reports a maximum size of about 7.5 in standard length, making this a modest mormyrid compared with some larger Mormyrus species from the Nile and Zambezi systems. Near the base of the tail sits the electric organ, derived from modified muscle tissue, which fires a weak, pulse-type discharge many times a second. Mormyrids carry one of the largest brains relative to body size of any fish group, with an enlarged cerebellum devoted to processing the constant stream of electrical information from the discharge — a sensory specialization, not a general sign of intelligence in the human sense.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Athi-Galana-Sabaki river system in Kenya, the country's second-longest river at roughly 242 mi, draining a catchment of about 58,600 sq km before reaching the Indian Ocean near Malindi. Unlike the Congo or Niger mormyrids more familiar to aquarists, M. bernhardi lives in an East African coastal drainage rather than a Central or West African system.
The lower Athi-Galana-Sabaki carries a heavy sediment load, visible as a distinct turbid plume where the river meets the ocean, conditions that put a premium on electrolocation over eyesight for finding food and avoiding obstacles. Specific water-chemistry data (temperature, pH) for the population has not been published in the sources reviewed for this account; general mormyrid husbandry literature calls for soft, acidic-to-neutral water, a reasonable proxy rather than a measured value for this particular river.
Feeding
Like other mormyrids, M. bernhardi is presumed to feed on benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — picked from soft sediment using its elongated snout, with electrolocation helping it detect buried prey it cannot see. Feeding activity in mormyrids is concentrated after dark, when the fish are most active.

In the wild, some mormyrids are thought to scatter eggs among plants or in sheltered margins during flood season, with little or no parental care documented afterward, but this has not been confirmed for M. bernhardi. Parental care across the genus is poorly studied.
In the aquarium
Mormyrus bernhardi is not a fish likely to be encountered in the aquarium trade: it is a narrow-range Kenyan endemic assessed as Vulnerable, with no indication of an established export or captive-bred supply. General mormyrid husbandry, drawn from more commonly kept relatives such as Gnathonemus petersii, still applies to the genus as a whole and is worth noting for context.
Mormyrids are fish for experienced keepers, not beginners. They need soft, acidic-to-neutral water, meticulous water quality, and a fine sand substrate, since coarse gravel abrades the sensitive, probing snout. A dimly lit tank with driftwood and plant cover suits their mostly nocturnal habits, and a single fish is often the safest approach, because mormyrids can be aggressive toward their own species and other mormyrids in a confined tank. They are also notably sensitive to poor water conditions and to some medications, particularly copper-based treatments, so any dosing should be conservative and closely watched.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrus bernhardi as Vulnerable, an assessment made on 30 June 2022 under criterion D2, which applies to species with a very small or restricted population and range that makes them vulnerable to sudden decline. As a single-river endemic confined to the Athi-Galana-Sabaki system, the species has essentially nowhere else to persist if conditions in that river deteriorate.
Fishing pressure within the Athi-Galana-Sabaki system is cited as a threat to the species. Because the population is restricted to one drainage, any combination of overfishing, water abstraction, pollution or habitat degradation in that single river carries outsized risk for its long-term survival.
