Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrus caschive was described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, in the tenth edition of Systema Naturae, from specimens collected on the Nile by the Swedish naturalist and Linnaeus student Fredric Hasselquist. It is one of the earliest mormyrids to receive a scientific name. The family Mormyridae sits within Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, an ancient teleost lineage that branched off early in fish evolution and now survives as scattered relict groups across South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia — the African mormyrids and the unrelated Notopteridae featherback knifefishes both belong here, while the superficially similar electric knifefishes of South America are a separate order entirely.
The genus name Mormyrus comes from the Greek mormyros, an old name for an unrelated Mediterranean sea bream that Linnaeus reused, on the strength of a rough resemblance in shape, for this group of African river fishes. The species epithet caschive is a Latinised rendering of a local Nile-region name recorded from Hasselquist's specimens; its deeper derivation is not well documented. Mormyrus is a large genus spread across Africa, and many of its species look alike, so aquarium and field identification often leans on each species' distinct electric-organ discharge as much as on external anatomy.
Morphology
Mormyrus caschive has the elongate, laterally compressed body typical of the genus, tapering toward a slender caudal peduncle and a deeply forked tail. The head carries a small, low-set mouth on a somewhat drawn-out, gently downturned snout — the source of the "bottlenose" common name — rather than the flexible, worm-like trunk (the schnauzenorgan) found in the related elephantnose Gnathonemus petersii. The eyes are small, in keeping with a fish that relies more on its electric sense than on vision in turbid water. Colouration is a plain silvery-grey to brownish-olive over the body, without the bold pattern seen in some of its relatives.
FishBase lists a maximum total length of about 39.4 in, though most individuals encountered are considerably smaller, commonly in the 15.7–19.7 in range. As in other mormyrids, an electric organ in the caudal peduncle generates a continuous, weak electric field with a discharge waveform specific to the species, and the fish reads distortions in that field through electroreceptors spread over its skin. Processing this constant stream of electrosensory information is handled by a greatly enlarged cerebellum, giving mormyrids as a group one of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish.
Habitat
Mormyrus caschive is a Nile basin endemic, recorded from the lower Nile through the Bahr-el-Jebel, into Lake Albert and the Albert and Murchison Niles, with a range spanning Egypt, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda. It lives in the main channel and associated floodplain habitats of this river system rather than in still lake water alone.
FishBase characterises its water as tropical, in the roughly 72–75 °F range, with a cited pH down toward 5.0; broader water-chemistry detail for the species is sparse. The Nile in this stretch carries a heavy sediment load for much of the year, and the resulting low-visibility water is exactly the kind of environment in which a weakly electric sense — rather than eyesight — becomes the more reliable way to navigate and find food.
Feeding
Mormyrus caschive is a bottom-feeding insectivore. FishBase records chironomid (non-biting midge) larvae, mosquito larvae and bloodworms among its prey, taken by picking food items from the substrate with its small, downturned mouth.
In practice this makes it a benthic forager well suited to the turbid Nile channels it inhabits: rather than hunting by sight, it is thought to use its electric sense to locate small invertebrates hidden in sediment or active after dark, in the same way better-studied mormyrids such as Gnathonemus petersii are known to do.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour in Mormyrus caschive have not been well studied. As in other Nile-basin mormyrids, breeding is presumed to be seasonal and tied to the river's flood cycle, when rising water opens up floodplain habitat that may be used for spawning.
The electric-organ discharge is thought to play a role in courtship and species recognition across the family, letting individuals identify their own species and potential mates in dark, sediment-clouded water where visual cues are of little use. The specific courtship sequence, mate choice and spawning site preferences of Mormyrus caschive itself have not been documented in the literature reviewed here.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Mormyrus caschive is essentially unknown, and the species' reproductive biology in the wild is poorly understood beyond the general pattern shared by African mormyrids. Almost all aquarium specimens in trade are wild-caught rather than captive-bred.
Across the family, some mormyrids are thought to scatter adhesive eggs among submerged roots or vegetation with little further parental involvement, while a few species may guard a clutch briefly; which pattern, if either, applies to Mormyrus caschive has not been confirmed. No reliable account of a successful home-aquarium spawning of this species exists, and prospective keepers should not expect to breed it.
In the aquarium
This is a large, specialist fish, not a beginner community species. Given a reported maximum length around 39.4 in, and a routine adult size of 15.7–19.7 in, Mormyrus caschive needs a tank of 59.1 in or more in length even at typical sizes, with room to grow further; it is a poor fit for anything smaller. Provide a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate — coarse or sharp material can damage the sensitive snout it uses to probe for food — along with dim lighting and ample driftwood, roots or other cover, since mormyrids are most active at dusk and after dark.
Because the species reads its surroundings partly by electric field, water quality matters more than in many aquarium fish: mormyrids are known to be sensitive to poor conditions and to tolerate some medications poorly, so ammonia and nitrite must be kept near zero and treatments should be dosed conservatively, ideally in a separate quarantine tank. As with other mormyrids, keeping a group of three or more rather than a single fish or a pair is generally recommended, since these fish use their electric discharges to signal to conspecifics and a lone individual in a tank with no others of its kind is thought to fare worse. Diet should be live or frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, mosquito larvae and similar foods — rather than flake or pellet alone.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrus caschive as Least Concern, an assessment made in 2021 and published in 2022. The species has a wide distribution across the Nile basin and no major widespread threats have been identified.
As with other broadly distributed Nile fishes, localised pressures from water development, pollution and fishing exist across parts of its range, but none of these are flagged by the assessment as a significant threat to the species as a whole.
