Mormyrus dendera is a little-documented member of Mormyridae, the African elephant-snout fishes, part of the Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, among the oldest surviving branches of the bony fishes and named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against a pad on the roof of the mouth. Like every mormyrid, it is presumed to carry a weakly electric organ near the base of the tail that produces a faint, pulsed discharge for finding its way and communicating in dark water, read through some of the highest brain-to-body ratios recorded in any fish. Mormyrus dendera was described by the French naturalist Bernard Germain de Lacépède in 1803, in the period when he was compiling his multi-volume Histoire naturelle des poissons. It belongs to the family Mormyridae within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — a scattered, deep-time radiation of fishes found across four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia) and united by that toothed lingual bone rather than by any shared modern habitat. Mormyridae is an exclusively African family of weakly electric fishes, convergent with but entirely unrelated to the electric knifefishes of South America (Gymnotiformes); the two groups evolved similar electric senses independently on opposite sides of the Atlantic.

The genus Mormyrus is one of the larger genera in the family, with more than twenty described species spread across African river systems from the Nile to the Congo and Zambezi. The genus name comes from the ancient Greek mormyros, originally the name of an unrelated marine sea bream, later adopted by Linnaeus in 1758 for this freshwater African group. The specific epithet dendera is unusual among Mormyrus names in reading as a place name rather than a descriptive Latin or Greek term; it plausibly echoes Dendera (also spelled Denderah), a town on the Nile in Upper Egypt, which would fit the period — Lacépède and his contemporaries described several African fishes from material and reports connected to Egypt around this time. Morphology

Anyone offered a fish under this name in the trade should treat the identification with real scepticism, since many small Mormyrus and related mormyrids look similar and are frequently mislabelled or sold under a generic "elephantnose" tag.

Where general Mormyridae care applies, it calls for a soft sand substrate — never sharp gravel, which can injure the sensitive, electroreceptor-rich skin — dim lighting, secure hiding places, and pristine, stable water, since mormyrids are notably intolerant of ammonia and nitrite and unusually sensitive to copper-based and some other standard medications; treat conservatively and only when necessary. Depending on the species, mormyrids are kept either solitary or in a properly sized group of five or more to spread territorial aggression rather than concentrate it on a single tankmate.
