Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrus casalis was described by the Italian ichthyologist Decio Vinciguerra in 1922, based on material from the Lower Shabeelle River in Somalia. It belongs to the family Mormyridae within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — a deep-time radiation of freshwater fishes found today in South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia, unified by a toothed bone on the tongue (the basihyal) that occludes against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth. The genus Mormyrus is one of the largest in the family, with dozens of species across African rivers and lakes that often look very similar to one another and are most reliably told apart by their species-specific electric organ discharge rather than by external appearance alone.
Vinciguerra worked extensively on East African freshwater fishes collected during early twentieth-century Italian expeditions to Somalia and the Horn of Africa, describing several mormyrids from the Jubba-Shabeelle system during that period. Mormyrus casalis is treated as a distinct, valid species in modern taxonomic databases (FishBase, WoRMS, ITIS), though it remains poorly studied relative to the better-known West African and Congo basin members of the genus.
Morphology
Mormyrus casalis shares the general Mormyrus body plan: an elongate, laterally compressed body, a small, ventrally set mouth typical of a fish that forages by probing the substrate, a short-based dorsal fin set well back on the body opposite a longer anal fin, and a distinctly forked tail on a slender caudal peduncle. Like other mormyrids it carries a weakly electric organ near the base of the tail, and its skin is covered in small, embedded scales rather than being naked.
FishBase records a maximum length of roughly 8.7 in for the species, a modest size within the genus, which otherwise ranges from small stream-dwellers up to the meter-plus Mormyrus longirostris of southern Africa. Because so few individuals of M. casalis have been examined, fine details of coloration and proportion beyond the original description are not well documented; species-level identification within Mormyrus is, in any case, most confidently made from the electric organ discharge rather than from color pattern or body shape alone.
Habitat
The species is known from the Lower Shabeelle River in Somalia, part of the Jubba-Shabeelle drainage that carries water from the Ethiopian highlands across the Somali lowlands toward the Indian Ocean coast. This places Mormyrus casalis in an East African river system quite separate from the Congo basin and West African rivers that hold most of the genus's diversity.
Detailed habitat data for this particular species are sparse — no dedicated field studies of its ecology appear in the accessible literature. Based on the general habits of river-dwelling Mormyrus and the character of the Shabeelle system, it likely occupies slow-flowing, sediment-laden river channels and adjacent floodplain habitat, the turbid, low-visibility water in which a weakly electric sense is especially useful for finding food and other fish after dark.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study of Mormyrus casalis has been published. Mormyrus species in general are benthic foragers that use their electric sense to detect buried or hidden prey in soft substrate, taking aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms, mostly during low-light and nighttime hours when they are most active.
In the absence of direct data for this species, that family-level pattern is the best available guide: an aquarium specimen, if ever kept, should be offered live or frozen invertebrate foods such as bloodworm, blackworm and brine shrimp, fed after the lights go down to match its natural foraging rhythm.
Mating
Courtship and species recognition in Mormyrus are mediated substantially through the electric organ discharge, a pulse waveform that differs subtly between species and, within a species, can differ between males and females and change with reproductive state. Whether or how this operates in Mormyrus casalis specifically has not been documented; no observations of its courtship behavior, in the wild or in captivity, appear to exist in the accessible literature.
Wild mormyrids in general are thought to be seasonal spawners whose reproductive activity tracks the rains and the resulting rise and fall of river levels, moving onto flooded margins or into slower side-channels to breed. Data sparse for this species specifically.
Breeding
Mormyrids as a group are essentially not bred in the aquarium hobby, and Mormyrus casalis is no exception — indeed it is rare enough in collections that even anecdotal captive-breeding reports do not appear to exist. Its wild reproductive biology is likewise poorly known beyond the general assumption, shared across the genus, of seasonal, flood-associated spawning.
No eggs, larvae or parental behavior have been documented for this species. Any account of its breeding beyond these generalities would be speculation rather than fact, so none is offered here.
In the aquarium
Mormyrus casalis is not an established aquarium fish; it is not known to appear in the ornamental trade with any regularity, and the practical care notes below draw on general Mormyridae husbandry rather than direct experience with this species. Mormyrids as a family do best in soft, only lightly mineralized, tannin-tinted water with dim lighting and a soft sand substrate they can probe with their electric sense, roughly 75–82 °F and a pH nearer neutral than either extreme. They are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to some medications, and because they lack the heavy scale armor of many fish, dosing should be conservative and copper-based treatments avoided.
Within the genus, individual mormyrids can be territorial toward their own species and are sometimes best kept singly or in a carefully sized group rather than paired at random. Should this species ever become available, it should be treated as a delicate, poorly studied specialist rather than a routine community fish, with priority given to stable, gentle water conditions over tankmate variety.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List has not evaluated Mormyrus casalis; its conservation status is listed as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a threat category. This reflects how little survey work has covered the species rather than any specific evidence about its population trend.
