Taxonomy & naming
Petrocephalus simus was described by the French naturalist Henri Sauvage in 1879, from syntypes collected at Doumé, near Lastoursville on the Ogooué River in Gabon, now held at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris. It was placed in the genus Petrocephalus from the outset and has kept that placement ever since, one of the more stable names among the many small mormyrids described from Central Africa in the nineteenth century. The family Mormyridae, within the order Osteoglossiformes, is the ancient African branch of the bonytongue fishes, and Petrocephalus is its largest genus, with several dozen species distinguished chiefly by the pattern of the weak electric pulses they generate rather than by outward appearance.
The genus name Petrocephalus comes from the Greek petros (rock, stone) and kephale (head), referring to the hard, blunt skull typical of these fish. The species epithet simus is the Latin form of the Greek simos, "snub-nosed" or "flat-nosed" — the original description does not spell out Sauvage's reasoning, but the word most plausibly points to the short, blunt snout profile shared by species in this genus.
Morphology
Petrocephalus simus is a small mormyrid, reaching about 4.5 in in total length according to FishBase — modest even by the standards of a genus made up mostly of small fish. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed, with a single dorsal fin of 20 to 23 branched rays set opposite a longer anal fin of 31 to 34 rays, and neither fin carries spines. The head is short and blunt, in keeping with the "rock-head" sense of the genus name, with the small, subterminal mouth typical of Petrocephalus rather than the elongated chin appendage of its relative Gnathonemus.
As in all mormyrids, an electric organ near the base of the tail generates a weak, continuous pulse discharge, read by electroreceptors spread across the head and body. FishBase notes that fish sharing a shoal of this species carry a common discharge pattern, consistent with the general mormyrid habit of using electrolocation for both navigating turbid water and recognising other members of the same species — visual identification among Petrocephalus species is notoriously unreliable, and the discharge is often the only dependable marker.
Habitat
Petrocephalus simus is native to west-central Africa. Its type locality is the Ogooué River near Lastoursville in Gabon, and it is also documented across much of the Congo River basin, with records from Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, and Zambia. FishBase lists it as freshwater, demersal, and potamodromous — undertaking migrations entirely within fresh water, likely tied to the seasonal river-level changes typical of Central African floodplain systems.
It occupies tropical lowland rivers at temperatures of roughly 75–82 °F. Specific pH data for the species is not documented; the Ogooué and Congo river systems it inhabits range from clear, near-neutral channels to darker, more acidic blackwater tributaries, and without direct measurements for this species that range should be read as context rather than a confirmed figure.
Feeding
Petrocephalus simus is classed by FishBase as entomophagous, with a trophic level of about 3.2 — consistent with a diet of aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates taken from the riverbed. Like other mormyrids, it most likely locates this prey by electrolocation in silt and cover rather than by sight, foraging most actively after dark.
No aquarium feeding record exists for this species specifically. General mormyrid husbandry practice favours live and frozen invertebrate foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, offered after the lights go down; dried foods are typically ignored.
Mating
FishBase describes Petrocephalus simus as a fractional spawner, releasing eggs in batches over an extended period rather than in a single event — a pattern seen elsewhere in the genus. It also notes that individuals sharing a shoal display a common electric organ discharge, which in mormyrids generally is thought to help fish recognise their own species and coordinate within a group, alongside a possible role in courtship.
Beyond that, no study of courtship behaviour, mate choice, or spawning-site selection has been published for this species, and its reproductive biology in the wild is otherwise undocumented.
Breeding
Breeding in Petrocephalus simus has not been recorded in the aquarium, and no detailed account of wild spawning beyond its classification as a fractional spawner is available. As with the great majority of mormyrids, any fish reaching hobbyists are wild-caught rather than captive-bred.
Parental care, egg placement, and incubation are all unknown for this species. Extrapolating detail from better-studied relatives would go beyond what the available sources support.
In the aquarium
Petrocephalus simus has no established history in the aquarium trade and does not appear in the hobby literature as a species kept or bred by aquarists. It is best treated as essentially absent from captivity rather than as an available, if obscure, option.
If a specimen were ever encountered — most likely mixed in with other small Petrocephalus or Marcusenius species sold generically as "elephantnose" — general mormyrid care would apply: soft substrate for probing, dim lighting, ample cover, and stable, clean water, since the family as a whole is known to be sensitive to poor water quality and to some common medications. At a maximum size of about 4.5 in it would not need a particularly large aquarium, but mormyrids are frequently intolerant of their own kind in small numbers and are usually best kept singly among peaceful tankmates or in an established group large enough to spread out aggression.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Petrocephalus simus as Least Concern, based on a 2020 assessment. The species is documented across a wide range spanning Gabon's Ogooué basin and much of the Congo River system, without evidence of a significant population decline.
No species-specific threats are documented. General pressures on Central African freshwater habitats — deforestation-driven siltation, water-quality decline, and localized fishing pressure — are the kind of long-term concerns that could eventually affect it, but nothing in the current assessment suggests they have done so yet.
