Petrocephalus odzalaensis is a small weakly electric mormyrid described in 2010 from Odzala National Park in the Republic of the Congo, one of five new Petrocephalus species named in the same revision. It reaches under 4 in in standard length and is known only from the middle Congo basin, in the Likouala, Ruki and Lukenie drainages spanning the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Like other mormyrids it carries a weak electric organ near the tail, and its discharge waveform was one of the characters used to separate it from closely related, similarly built species sharing the same rivers. It has not been evaluated by the IUCN and is effectively unknown in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Petrocephalus odzalaensis was described in 2010 by Sébastien Lavoué, John P. Sullivan and Matthew E. Arnegard, in a revision of the genus Petrocephalus based on fish collected in and around Odzala National Park in the Republic of the Congo. The paper, published in Zootaxa, described five new Petrocephalus species from the same river system, distinguishing them from one another with a combination of body proportions, fin-ray counts, pigmentation, and electric organ discharge (EOD) waveform. It belongs to the family Mormyridae within Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongue fishes, one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleosts.

The holotype, CUMV 88048 (3.5 in standard length), was collected from the Lékoli River near the Mboko débarcadère in Odzala National Park. Genetic analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene supported the new species as reproductively isolated from its congeners, reinforcing morphological and electrical differences already noted in the field. No synonyms are recorded since the original description.

Morphology

Petrocephalus odzalaensis is a small mormyrid, reaching about 4 in in standard length; the holotype measured 3.5 in SL and the largest specimen examined in the type series was 4 in SL. Like other Petrocephalus it has a rounded, blunt snout and a compact, laterally compressed body, without the elongated chin appendage — the schnauzenorgan — that characterizes the related genus Gnathonemus. The describing revision separated it from co-occurring congeners at Odzala using a dorsal fin shorter than the anal fin (20–22 branched dorsal rays against 27–29 branched anal rays) and a distinctive three-patch melanin pattern on the body.

As in all mormyrids, a weak electric organ near the base of the tail generates a pulse-type discharge, read by electroreceptors spread across the skin. In this species the discharge is triphasic at low gain — two main phases plus a small third phase — and the revision found no difference between the sexes in this signal among the Petrocephalus species examined from Odzala. Because several similarly built congeners share the same rivers, the discharge — differing from its neighbors in the amplitude of its final phase, total duration, and peak frequency — was one of the more reliable characters used to tell the species apart, since body shape alone is not always diagnostic.

Habitat

Petrocephalus odzalaensis is known from the middle Congo River basin in the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo, including the Likouala drainage in the Republic of Congo and the Ruki and Lukenie drainages in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The type locality lies within Odzala National Park, on the Lékoli River near the Mboko débarcadère, at roughly 0.62°N, 14.90°E.

The species is described as benthopelagic, occupying both the bottom layer and the open water column of the forest streams and lowland tributaries it inhabits, consistent with its Odzala National Park type locality. Published water-temperature and pH data specific to this species are not available; like other Congo basin forest-stream mormyrids it can be assumed to live in warm tropical water, but that is a general expectation rather than a measured figure for this population.

Feeding

No dietary study specific to Petrocephalus odzalaensis has been published. Other Petrocephalus species forage on benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, and small crustaceans — located in mud, sand, and leaf litter using their electric sense, and this species is presumed to feed the same way, though that has not been directly documented.

No aquarium feeding record exists for the species, since it has no established presence in the hobby.

Mating

No courtship or mate-recognition behavior has been described for Petrocephalus odzalaensis specifically. In mormyrids generally, the electric organ discharge is thought to carry information relevant to species and individual recognition, and by extension to courtship, alongside its roles in navigation and prey detection — a pattern documented across the family but not studied directly in this species.

Age or size at sexual maturity is also unrecorded for this species.

Breeding

No spawning has been recorded for Petrocephalus odzalaensis, in captivity or in the wild. Breeding biology across the genus Petrocephalus, and the family Mormyridae more broadly, remains poorly documented, and this species is no exception — nothing about egg deposition, incubation, or parental care has been published.

The species is not known to be kept or bred in aquaria, so no captive spawning account exists to draw on.

In the aquarium

Petrocephalus odzalaensis has no established presence in the aquarium trade and no documented aquarium-keeping history; it was described in 2010 from a national park research collection, not from trade specimens, and nothing in the literature suggests it has since reached hobbyist tanks. Any care notes for this species are necessarily extrapolated from mormyrids in general rather than drawn from direct experience with it.

Small mormyrids of this kind are generally kept over soft sand for probing, with dim lighting and ample cover, in stable water with minimal turbidity — the group is well known for sensitivity to poor water quality and to some medications, including many common ich and parasite treatments, so cautious dosing and gradual acclimation matter more than with most community fish. Live or frozen invertebrate foods offered after dark suit the natural foraging behavior of the genus better than daytime flake feeding. None of this substitutes for a documented care record specific to Petrocephalus odzalaensis, which does not exist.

Conservation

Petrocephalus odzalaensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. It was described relatively recently, in 2010, and is known only from a limited set of collections in the middle Congo basin.

No species-specific threats have been documented. As with other freshwater fishes restricted to Congo basin forest streams, habitat disturbance, deforestation, and water-quality change in the wider Likouala, Ruki, and Lukenie drainages are the kind of general long-term pressure that could affect a narrow-range species like this one, though that is a general concern rather than a documented one for Petrocephalus odzalaensis specifically.
