Pollimyrus maculipinnis is a small African mormyrid described by the American Museum of Natural History ichthyologists John T. Nichols and Francesca La Monte in 1934, one of roughly two dozen similar-looking species in the genus Pollimyrus, the dwarf stonebashers. Like every member of the elephantnose family it generates a weak electric field from an organ near the base of the tail and reads the surrounding water through electroreceptors spread across its skin, the sense that makes mormyrids some of the most electrically sophisticated fish alive. It is a poorly documented species: no confirmed size measurement, distribution record, or IUCN assessment could be established for this account, and it has no history in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Pollimyrus maculipinnis was described by the American ichthyologists John T. Nichols and Francesca La Monte in 1934. It belongs to the genus Pollimyrus, a group of small mormyrids sometimes called dwarf stonebashers, within the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — in the order Osteoglossiformes, the ancient bonytongue lineage of teleost fishes. The original type locality, and any subsequent taxonomic revision or synonymy specific to this species, are not documented in the sources available for this account and should not be assumed from other, better-studied members of the genus.
