Taxonomy & naming
Pollimyrus isidori was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1847, in the nineteenth volume of Histoire naturelle des poissons, under the name Mormyrus isidori. The type locality is the Nile River in Egypt, and syntype material is held at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris (MNHN A-4209, treated as the holotype, with further specimens catalogued under A-2612). The species was transferred to the genus Pollimyrus by Gosse in 1984 and has been retained there through later revisions, most recently a 2024–2025 morphometric study by Dierickx and colleagues that described four new Pollimyrus species from Central Africa without synonymizing P. isidori.
The species belongs to Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids, within Osteoglossiformes, the ancient bonytongue lineage. Two further subspecies, Pollimyrus isidori fasciaticeps and Pollimyrus isidori osborni, are restricted to the Congo River basin, while the nominate form ranges more widely across the Nile, Niger, Senegal, Gambia, Volta and Chad drainages to the north and west.
Morphology
FishBase lists a maximum total length of about 4 in for Pollimyrus isidori, making it a small species within a family that includes fish well over half a metre long. A growth study from the Niger Delta recorded standard lengths up to roughly 3.5 in, and aquarium references describe wild individuals occasionally approaching 6 in, with captive fish usually smaller. The body is compressed and moderately deep for a mormyrid, with a small mouth and a blunt snout rather than the elongated, trunk-like chin organ of its relative Gnathonemus.
As in all mormyrids, an electric organ in the caudal peduncle produces a weak pulse-type discharge, and Pollimyrus isidori is one of the more thoroughly documented species for this signal. The pulse lasts roughly 0.08 milliseconds in adults, over a hundred times shorter than the roughly 10-millisecond pulse recorded in larvae, and the adult waveform develops gradually — a recognizable discharge first appears around eight days after spawning and reaches its adult form by 30 to 40 days. Discharge rate also differs by sex: males hold a steady rate near 18 Hz, while females discharge more slowly, at 8 to 11 Hz, during courtship and spawning. Distinct dark and light colour morphs have additionally been documented in Nile basin populations, each carrying its own measurable EOD profile.
Habitat
Pollimyrus isidori is a freshwater species distributed across a wide arc of West and Central Africa, recorded from the Nile River in Egypt and Sudan, the Senegal and Gambia systems, the Niger River and its tributary the Bénoué, the Volta drainage, and the Lake Chad basin; the Catalog of Fishes also lists the Central African Republic within its range, and a field survey has documented it in the Warri River near Agbarho in Nigeria's Delta State. Two restricted subspecies occupy the Congo basin farther south (see Taxonomy & naming).
Within these systems it occupies ordinary river channel habitat rather than a swamp or floodplain specialty, foraging near the bottom and moving up into the water column at night. This pattern is consistent with its broader description as a Sudanian and Guinean river-basin fish rather than a lake or headwater specialist.
Feeding
Pollimyrus isidori feeds on small invertebrates — tubifex and other worms, insect larvae and similar prey — locating them with its electric sense in low-visibility water, mostly after dark. Aquarium care sources describe it as a nocturnal feeder that is reluctant to accept dried food, needing live or frozen tubifex, small worms or brine shrimp offered once the lights are out, with only occasional acceptance of flake.
Mating
No field account of courtship or spawning behaviour has been published for Pollimyrus isidori. What is documented, from laboratory recordings rather than wild observation, is that its electric organ discharge differs measurably by sex: males hold a steady patrolling rate near 18 Hz, while females shift to a slower, more regular 8-to-11 Hz rate during the courtship and spawning period, and the relative amplitude of the discharge's component phases also differs between the sexes. Researchers studying the species have proposed that this rate shift is involved in sex recognition and reproductive signalling, though how a receiving fish responds, or what triggers the shift in the wild, has not been described.
No external, visually apparent difference between males and females has been reported for this species. Sex can currently only be inferred from the electric discharge itself, not from body shape or colour.
Breeding
Pollimyrus isidori has no established breeding record in the aquarium hobby; the care literature consulted for this account rates captive spawning attempts as consistently unsuccessful, and no wild spawning event has been documented in the sources reviewed. Laboratory studies of its electric organ have tracked development from very early life — a recognizable discharge pulse appears around eight days after spawning and reaches its adult waveform by 30 to 40 days — which indicates that spawning has occurred at least once under research conditions to obtain larvae for study, even though the spawning act itself, and any parental behaviour around it, has not been described in the literature available.
In the aquarium
Pollimyrus isidori occasionally appears in the aquarium trade among small mormyrids kept by specialists in weakly electric fish, but it has no established record of captive breeding and stays out of the mainstream hobby. Care sources give a temperature range of about 77–84 °F, pH 6.0–8.0 with a preference nearer 7.5, and moderately soft-to-hard water around 4–18 dH, in a tank with soft substrate and subdued lighting.
As with mormyrids generally, feeding is the main challenge: this species needs live or frozen foods such as tubifex, small worms or brine shrimp, offered after dark, since it forages mainly at night and only occasionally takes flake. Mormyrids are also known among fishkeepers for sensitivity to poor or fluctuating water quality and to some medications, so gradual acclimation, mature filtration, and conservative dosing of any treatment matter more with this fish than with most community species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Pollimyrus isidori as Least Concern, based on a 2022 assessment, reflecting its wide distribution across multiple major West and Central African river systems. No species-specific threats are documented in the assessment consulted for this account.
