Taxonomy & naming
Lophiosilurus apurensis was described by Jacques Mees in 1978, with a type locality in the Río Arichuna, a tributary of the Río Apure in Venezuela — the source of both the species epithet and its common trade name. It belongs to the family Pseudopimelodidae, the bumblebee and dwarf pimelodid catfishes, a group only fully separated from Pimelodidae in recent decades of catfish systematics; older literature and some aquarium references may still place its relatives under broader Pimelodidae groupings.
The genus Cephalosilurus is small, restricted to a handful of large-headed South American species, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Lophiosilurus apurensis as the currently valid combination. The genus name is a straightforward Greek-Latin compound describing the fish's most obvious feature — its oversized head.
This fish was long listed as Cephalosilurus apurensis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Lophiosilurus, and the current combination Lophiosilurus apurensis is followed here.
Morphology
This is a heavy-bodied, big-headed catfish with a wide, flattened skull, a large terminal mouth and long barbels adapted for detecting prey in low light or turbid water. The skin is completely scaleless, smooth and soft — the source of the "jelly catfish" nickname — and this naked skin makes the species considerably more sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard fish treatments than scaled fish; conservative, often half-strength dosing is advised whenever medicating it.
FishBase lists a maximum size of about 11.4 in standard length, but that figure badly understates what the species does in captivity: aquarium reports (Scotcat) document growth from a 11.8 in juvenile to 25.6 in, with some individuals reaching 27.6 in total length, and juveniles can add roughly 3.9 in within their first 10–12 months in a well-fed tank. Like most pseudopimelodids it carries stiff, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines that lock erect and can jab or tangle in a net; it is not documented as venomous, but the spines alone are reason enough to move it in a container rather than netting it.
Habitat
Lophiosilurus apurensis is endemic to the Orinoco drainage of Venezuela, described from the Río Arichuna in Apure state and reported more broadly from the Orinoco system along the Colombia–Venezuela border. It is a demersal freshwater fish, living on or near the substrate of moderate to large lowland river channels.
Reported aquarium water parameters span a fairly wide, forgiving range — roughly 72–81 °F at a pH of about 6.5–7.5 in soft to moderately hard water — and hobbyist sources note the species tolerates a notably broad range of water conditions once established. A gentle to moderate current, reflecting its riverine origin, is generally recommended.
Feeding
In the wild and in the aquarium this is a nocturnal benthic carnivore and ambush predator rather than an active hunter: it lies still on the bottom for long stretches and strikes suddenly and forcefully when prey comes within range. Reported prey includes earthworms, small fish, shrimp and other crustaceans.
Aquarium accounts describe juveniles starting on live fish before adapting readily to shrimp, chopped worms, smelt and other whole or filleted meaty foods offered two to three times a week; despite its large adult size it remains a sedentary feeder that does not need constant feeding. Any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth should be assumed to be food, not company.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Lophiosilurus apurensis in the aquarium literature available, and the cached sources do not describe any wild reproductive account either. Hobbyist reports note only that females appear more aggressive than males, which hints at some behavioural dimorphism but stops short of describing an actual mating sequence. Given the near-total absence of captive breeding reports for this genus, mating behaviour should be considered essentially unknown outside its native rivers.
Breeding
There is no documented aquarium breeding of Lophiosilurus apurensis. Like many large, sedentary South American pseudopimelodids and pimelodids, it is essentially never bred in home tanks — the fish reaching the trade are wild-collected rather than captive-raised. Nothing in the available sources describes parental care, egg placement, or any spawning trigger, so none should be assumed or invented; this is a species where "not bred in the aquarium" is the honest and complete answer.
In the aquarium
This species is a serious commitment, not a casual purchase, and it is one of the clearest size-trap catfish in the hobby: a placid 11.8 in juvenile can become a 25.6 in-plus adult within a year or two, so it needs planning for an eventual tank in the region of 2 metres long with real depth (around 27.6 in), holding hundreds of litres — sources cite a minimum of roughly 75 US gal just for the juvenile stage, with far more required as it grows. Because the skin is scaleless, treat any medication conservatively, particularly copper-based products.
It is a predator plain and simple: keep it only with fish and other tankmates too large to be swallowed, since anything smaller will eventually be eaten. It carries locking, serrated spines that catch in nets and can jab the keeper, so move it by container rather than net. Being nocturnal and sedentary, it wants a dim retreat or cave to sit in by day and is more active at and after dusk; despite its bulk it is not a hyperactive fish and tolerates a fairly wide range of established water conditions.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Lophiosilurus apurensis as Least Concern, with an assessment dated 2020 noting low to moderate vulnerability to fishing pressure. It is endemic to the Orinoco drainage of Venezuela, a large system, and is not currently considered threatened.
As with many localized South American catfish species, long-term risks would track habitat and water-quality pressures on the Orinoco basin generally rather than any species-specific threat identified to date; the available sources do not document targeted conservation concerns beyond the Least Concern rating itself.
