Taxonomy & naming
Trachelyichthys displicatus was described in 2026 by Bruno B. Calegari, Alany Akama, Carl Ferraris Jr., and Roberto E. Reis, in a revision that raised the genus Trachelyichthys from two long-neglected species to six. The genus was erected by Mees in 1974 for T. decaradiatus, and until this study only one other species, T. exilis, had ever been named — both known from a handful of museum specimens collected decades apart. Trachelyichthys sits in the family Auchenipteridae (the driftwood catfishes) within the subfamily Auchenipterinae, and recent phylogenetic work places it in the tribe Auchenipterichthyini, as sister to the genus Trachelyopterichthys.
Within the genus's family tree, T. displicatus (referred to as 'Trachelyichthys "amazonas"' in earlier phylogenetic papers) is the sister lineage to T. exilis of the Peruvian Amazon; that pair, in turn, is sister to a clade containing T. decaradiatus of Guyana and T. varii of the Jufari River. The genus as a whole is diagnosed from other auchenipterids by 14 morphological synapomorphies, including a rounded anterior cranial fontanel and the absence of an adipose fin. Trachelyichthys displicatus itself is distinguished from every relative except T. gaiophanes by having four free pterygiophores supporting the dorsal-fin soft rays, and it carries conspicuous, pupil- to eye-sized dark spots across the head and trunk that most other Trachelyichthys species lack.
Morphology
Trachelyichthys displicatus is the largest known species in its genus, reaching at least 3.1 in standard length among the examined type series — a paratype from the Tapajós basin — though the 2.71 in SL holotype, a mature male, is itself a mid-sized individual within that range. The body is slender and laterally compressed, deepest around the dorsal-fin origin, with a broadly rounded head and a very short, rounded snout. Like every Trachelyichthys, it has no adipose fin and no body scales; the skin is entirely bare, as in all driftwood catfishes.
The ground colour is pale cream to light yellowish brown, overlaid with large, irregular dark brown to black spots roughly the size of the eye, arranged in several rows along the flank and separated by an unpigmented mid-lateral stripe running from behind the pectoral fin to the caudal peduncle. The head carries dense dark mottling, often forming two oval blotches behind the nuchal plate. The dorsal fin has a robust spine and 4–5 soft rays supported by four free pterygiophores, a trait shared only with T. gaiophanes; the pectoral fin has a strongly serrated locking spine, and the long-based anal fin carries 34–37 rays. The caudal fin is truncate and asymmetrical, marked at its base by two dark blotches.
Habitat
Trachelyichthys displicatus has by far the broadest range of any Trachelyichthys: it has been collected from blackwater creeks and lakes along the main channel of the rio Amazonas and in the lower reaches of several major tributaries — the Xingu, Tapajós, Negro, and Tefé — near their confluence with the Amazon, across the Brazilian states of Pará and Amazonas. Specimens come from igarapés (forest streams), lake margins, and igapó (seasonally flooded forest) creeks, all tannin-stained blackwater habitats typical of the genus. The holotype was purchased from a local ornamental-fish collector working a creek near Santarém, Pará, showing that the species does turn up incidentally in the small-scale local aquarium trade even though it has never entered international commerce.
Like other members of the genus, T. displicatus is presumed to shelter in submerged wood and root tangles during the day — the structural habitat that gives driftwood catfishes their common name — though this behaviour has not been directly documented for the species in the literature.
Feeding
No dietary study exists for Trachelyichthys displicatus under its current name, but material later recognised as this species was the subject of the first published ecological data for the genus: Freitas & Zuanon (2022) studied feeding and reproduction in Trachelyichthys specimens from the Santarém region, publishing their results under the name T. exilis before this 2026 revision reassigned that population to T. displicatus. Their study found the diet to be predominantly carnivorous, tending toward piscivorous — feeding more on other fish than the invertebrate-heavy diet typical of many smaller auchenipterids.
Nothing else about its feeding behaviour or timing (nocturnal versus diurnal activity) has been documented.
Mating
Trachelyichthys displicatus shows the anal-fin modification typical of nuptial male Auchenipterinae: the anterior-most anal-fin rays are drawn out into a rigid genital tube that functions as an intromittent organ, used to inseminate the female internally — one of the very few internal-fertilisation systems known among catfishes. The species description notes no modification of the maxillary barbel in males, though some nuptial males show a slightly longer dorsal fin than females and non-reproductive males.
The Freitas & Zuanon (2022) study, now understood to have sampled this species under the name T. exilis, provided the first reproductive-biology data published for the genus, though the original species description does not summarise its findings in detail.
Breeding
No aquarium spawning of Trachelyichthys displicatus has been reported; the species has never been kept in the hobby. The family-level pattern in Auchenipteridae is that internal fertilisation lets the female store sperm and lay fertile eggs afterward, sometimes with a delay from mating, with adhesive eggs deposited on wood, leaves, or other submerged surfaces and little or no parental care. Whether this species follows that pattern exactly is presumed from its relatives rather than confirmed directly.
In the aquarium
Trachelyichthys displicatus is not established in the aquarium trade; the only documented contact with the hobby is that its holotype was bought from a local fish collector near Santarém, Brazil, rather than netted by the describing scientists themselves. No husbandry literature exists for this or any other Trachelyichthys species.
Presumed care, extrapolated from the driftwood-catfish family generally and labelled clearly as inference: a soft, blackwater-style setup with tannin-stained water, dim lighting, and ample submerged wood or root tangles for daytime cover would likely suit a fish of this build. Like all auchenipterids it is scaleless and lacks bony armour, so it should be netted carefully — the locking dorsal and pectoral spines catch in mesh — and treated cautiously with medications, particularly copper-based ones, which scaleless catfishes tolerate poorly as a rule.
Conservation
Trachelyichthys displicatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it was only described in 2026. In the description, the authors recommend a category of Least Concern under IUCN criteria, citing its documented occurrence across several widely separated localities along the main Amazon channel and the lower Xingu, Tapajós, Negro, and Tefé rivers — a distribution far broader than any other Trachelyichthys species — and the absence of any identified specific threat, though data on abundance or population trends are unavailable. This recommendation has not yet been submitted for a formal Red List assessment.
