Taxonomy & naming
Trachelyichthys gaiophanes was described in 2026 by Bruno B. Calegari, Alany Akama, Carl Ferraris Jr., and Roberto E. Reis, as one of four new species in a revision that more than tripled the known diversity of the genus Trachelyichthys. The genus, erected by Mees in 1974 for T. decaradiatus of Guyana, had gained only one further species — T. exilis, from Peru — in over fifty years; T. gaiophanes was itself collected as early as 1972, during the EPA–MZUSP Permanent Amazon Expedition, but sat undescribed in the collections of the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo for more than five decades before this study recognised it as new. Trachelyichthys is placed in the family Auchenipteridae (the driftwood catfishes), subfamily Auchenipterinae, tribe Auchenipterichthyini, as sister to the genus Trachelyopterichthys.
Molecular and morphological analysis places T. gaiophanes — informally 'Trachelyichthys "Rio Negro"' in earlier phylogenetic work — among the earlier-diverging lineages of the genus, alongside T. epachrus from the rio Madeira. It shares with T. epachrus a uniformly brown body colour and a laterally expanded posterior nuchal plate, and it shares with T. displicatus a dorsal fin supported by four free pterygiophores rather than the three found in the genus's remaining species.
Morphology
Trachelyichthys gaiophanes reaches at least 2.4 in standard length, the holotype female being the largest of ten examined specimens (range 1.5–2.4 in SL). The body is slender and laterally compressed, narrowing progressively behind the pectoral-fin origin, with a broadly rounded head and an unusually short, abruptly truncated snout — the anterior margin of the orbit sits closer to the snout tip than in any of its relatives.
Colouration is a uniform light to medium brown over the entire body and head, without the dark spots seen in most congeners — a trait shared only with T. epachrus — fading to whitish cream on the belly; live specimens appear darker, greyish black. The dorsal fin has 5 soft rays on four free pterygiophores; the pectoral fin has 5 rays; the anal fin carries 37–41 total rays. In mature males, the fourth anal-fin ray becomes rigid and elongated during the breeding season, part of the genus's reproductive anatomy (see Mating).
Habitat
Trachelyichthys gaiophanes is known from the upper rio Negro drainage of Amazonas, Brazil, around Santa Isabel do Rio Negro and, from a photographed live specimen, near São Gabriel da Cachoeira — both firmly within the classic blackwater rio Negro system. Specimens have been taken from lake margins along the riverbank, channels connecting lakes, and creeks near the mouth of the rio Urubaxi, all tannin-stained blackwater habitats.
As in other Trachelyichthys, it is presumed — though not directly documented for this species — to shelter in submerged wood during the day, the habitat that gives driftwood catfishes their name.
Feeding
No dietary study has targeted Trachelyichthys gaiophanes. The only ecological data published for the genus, Freitas & Zuanon (2022), described a predominantly carnivorous, piscivore-leaning diet, but that material is now attributed to a different species, T. displicatus, from the Santarém region. A similar diet is plausible for T. gaiophanes given the shared family biology, but this remains unconfirmed for this species.
Mating
Trachelyichthys gaiophanes shows no sexually dimorphic modification of the maxillary barbel in nuptial males, but mature males develop an enlarged, sinuous dorsal-fin spine, distinct from the straighter, proportionally smaller spine of females, juveniles, and non-nuptial males. As in the rest of the subfamily Auchenipterinae, nuptial males form an intromittent organ from the genital tube attached to the anterior anal-fin rays, used to inseminate the female internally — one of the very few internal-fertilisation systems documented among catfishes. In this species the fourth anal-fin ray becomes elongated and rigid during the breeding season, though its underlying bones remain unfused to the neighbouring rays.
Breeding
No breeding of Trachelyichthys gaiophanes has been documented, in the aquarium or in the wild. As in other Auchenipteridae, internal fertilisation is understood to let the female store sperm and lay fertile eggs after mating, with adhesive eggs and little to no parental care — a family-level pattern that has not been directly confirmed for this species.
In the aquarium
Trachelyichthys gaiophanes has never been recorded in the aquarium trade; the type series was collected for scientific survey work, not the ornamental fishery, and no husbandry account exists.
Extrapolating from the driftwood-catfish family generally, and labelled clearly as inference: a soft, blackwater-style setup with subdued lighting and ample submerged wood for daytime cover would likely suit this species, as it does other small auchenipterids. Its scaleless skin — a trait shared by every Trachelyichthys — would call for gentle netting and caution with copper-based medications, the standard precautions for driftwood catfishes generally.
Conservation
Trachelyichthys gaiophanes has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, having only been described in 2026. The authors recommend a category of Least Concern under IUCN criteria, noting that although the species is currently known from a small number of localities around Santa Isabel do Rio Negro, the surrounding region is not densely sampled and the species likely has a wider distribution across the upper rio Negro basin. No specific threat has been identified, though data on abundance and population trend are unavailable. Separately, similar but morphologically distinct specimens from the Río Atabapo in Venezuela are noted in the species description as 'Trachelyichthys aff. gaiophanes' — a population the authors consider possibly distinct, pending further material.
