Taxonomy & naming
Aspidoras rochai was described by the Brazilian biologist Rodolpho von Ihering in 1907, with a type locality at Guaramiranga in Ceará State, north-eastern Brazil. It holds a special place: it is the type species of the genus Aspidoras, designated by original designation and monotypy, so it is the reference point that defines the whole genus within the family Callichthyidae. Aspidoras is separated from the larger genus Corydoras chiefly by the divided, double dorsal fontanel of the skull.
The genus came through the 2024 revision of the Corydoradinae by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues as a valid lineage genus; that study split the unwieldy genus Corydoras into several lineages (Brochis, Hoplisoma, Osteogaster, Gastrodermus and others) while retaining Aspidoras, so Aspidoras rochai keeps its original combination and name. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) lists it as a valid species. The epithet rochai is a patronym, honouring the Ceará naturalist Francisco Dias da Rocha.
Morphology
Aspidoras rochai is a small catfish, reaching about 1.5 in in standard length — toward the larger end for the genus. It carries the corydoradine armour of two rows of overlapping bony scutes down each flank, a hard blunt head, three pairs of barbels around the downturned mouth, and stiff leading spines in the dorsal and pectoral fins.
The genus-defining feature is the divided cranial fontanel that distinguishes Aspidoras from Corydoras. In life it is a pale, sandy-bodied fish patterned with darker speckling and a stripe along the flank, with variably sized preadipose 'azygous' platelets — small extra plates ahead of the adipose fin — among the characters noted for it. The cryptic, sand-toned livery suits a fish that spends its life low over pale stream beds.
Habitat
Aspidoras rochai is native to the coastal river drainages of Ceará State in north-eastern Brazil, the type locality being the highland town of Guaramiranga in the Serra de Baturité. It lives in streams and shallow margins, foraging over sand and fine substrate in the warm, soft waters of the region's coastal basins.
Reported conditions place it in moderately warm, soft, near-neutral water: temperatures around 70–77 °F and a pH of roughly 6.0–7.5. These are the clear, sandy-bottomed stream habitats typical of the genus, where the fish keeps to the bed and sifts the substrate. The semi-arid Ceará setting means these streams can be seasonal and subject to marked wet–dry cycles.
Feeding
Aspidoras rochai is a benthic micro-omnivore, foraging in the corydoradine manner — pushing its barbels through sand and detritus to taste out small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms and organic matter, then sifting mouthfuls of substrate and expelling cleaned grains through the gills. It is an opportunistic generalist of the stream bed rather than a specialist. In the aquarium it takes sinking pellets, crushed dried foods and small live or frozen items, worked over continuously along the bottom.
Mating
Aspidoras rochai is an egg-laying shoaler with no pair bond, and is one of the better-observed members of the genus in captivity. Courtship reaches the characteristic corydoradine 'T-position', in which a male aligns himself at right angles to the female's head; the female holds a small clutch of eggs in a basket formed by her pelvic fins, then cleans a site and presses the adhesive eggs onto it. The sequence repeats in small batches, eggs being deposited on plants, wood, stones or the aquarium glass.
Breeding
Of the four, Aspidoras rochai is the one with real aquarium spawning history; hobbyist accounts (for example under the name A. cf. rochai) describe successful breeding. Like its relatives it gives no parental care: the adhesive eggs are scattered on surfaces and abandoned, and the adults will eat them, so a breeder removes either the eggs or the parents. Spawning is typically encouraged by cooler, softer water and a temperature drop that imitates seasonal rains. Eggs hatch in a few days, and the tiny fry need very small first foods — infusoria and microworm — before moving on to baby brine shrimp. Reflecting the seasonal, sometimes harsh nature of its native streams, the species responds well to clear wet-season cues in the tank.
In the aquarium
Aspidoras rochai is the most aquarium-familiar species of the four, though still an occasional rather than a staple import. It is a shoaling fish best kept in a group of six or more, over a soft sand substrate it can sift without wearing down its barbels — sharp or coarse gravel harms all corydoradines. Provide clean, well-oxygenated water with gentle current and regular changes; the warm, soft, near-neutral conditions of its range (about 70–77 °F) are a good target.
It is utterly peaceful and small, suited to a calm community of similarly small, gentle species rather than boisterous tankmates that would beat it to food. As with all corys, mind the fin spines when netting (a cup is safer) and never rely on it to live off scraps. As the genus's type species with a track record of captive spawning, it makes a rewarding subject for a keeper interested in the Aspidoras line.
Conservation
Aspidoras rochai is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, evaluated in 2018 — meaning there is not yet enough information on its range, population and threats to judge its status reliably. It is confined to coastal drainages of Ceará, a semi-arid region where streams are naturally seasonal and increasingly affected by water abstraction, reservoir construction, agriculture and urban growth. As a comparatively narrow-range north-eastern endemic, it warrants attention: the Data Deficient listing is a flag for further survey rather than a clean bill of health, and the security of its Ceará streams cannot simply be assumed.
