Taxonomy & the radiation
Cyathochromis was erected by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935, with Cyathochromis obliquidens fixed as the type species by monotypy — the genus has held exactly one species ever since, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (online version, updated 2026) still lists it as valid in Cichlidae: Pseudocrenilabrinae. The generic name combines Greek kyathos (a cup or ladle) with chromis (an old name for a perch-like fish), while the epithet obliquidens ("oblique teeth") refers to the slender outer-row jaw teeth that lean diagonally toward the midline of the jaw, a feature Trewavas singled out and that Ribbink et al. (1983) later illustrated in detail.
The genus sits inside the haplochromine species flock of Lake Malawi, and specifically among the mbuna — the rock-dwelling lineage that also contains Pseudotropheus, Maylandia (Metriaclima), Labeotropheus, Tropheops, Petrotilapia, Cynotilapia and others. That placement is the genuinely interesting part of its taxonomy, because Cyathochromis is ecologically a sand-and-weed fish. Earlier authors treated it as a borderline or transitional form: M. K. Oliver (malawicichlids.com) describes its plesiomorphic, primitive-mbuna colour pattern of faint bars and two thin stripes — a pattern that also recalls the non-endemic Astatotilapia calliptera and the hypothesised ancestral 'hap' colouration. Molecular work resolved the ambiguity: the phylogenomic SNP analysis summarised in Hulsey et al. (2017, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol.) found that "the sand-dwelling species Cyathochromis obliquidens was well-nested within the primarily rock-dwelling radiation known as the mbuna," and Malinsky et al. (2018, Nature Ecology & Evolution), sampling 73 species by whole-genome resequencing, likewise recovered it within the mbuna clade rather than with the open-water or sand genera. No revision has ever split the genus; the open question is not how many species it contains but whether the lake-wide colour forms (e.g. 'Narungu', 'Cobwe', 'Chiloelo') hide cryptic diversity within the single named species.
Defining features
Because the genus is monotypic, its defining features are simply those of C. obliquidens. It is a moderately deep-bodied, ovate mbuna reaching about 6 in (6 in) total length in FishBase's maximum, though in the field Konings (via malawi.si) gives more typical adult sizes of roughly 4.7 in (4.5 in) for males and 3.9 in (4 in) for females; aquarium fish often run a little larger. The diagnostic character is dental: the outer jaw teeth are slender and bicuspid and are set obliquely, leaning inward, and the mouth is built to cut and pluck loose algae rather than to rasp it from stone. This is what separates it functionally from look-alike mbuna.
Visually it is one of the more subtly marked mbuna — narrow faint vertical bars over a brownish-grey ground with two thin horizontal stripes, and breeding males developing prominent yellow egg-dummies (ocelli) on the anal fin, well documented in M. K. Oliver's underwater and specimen photographs from Cape Maclear and Monkey Bay. The main confusion in the field and the trade is with Tropheops 'weed' types and with Astatotilapia calliptera, which share that muted barred pattern; malawi.si notes the elongated, slightly protruding lower jaw and head profile as the more reliable way to tell Cyathochromis apart from Tropheops, while the oblique outer teeth distinguish it on close inspection.
Range & habitat
Cyathochromis is endemic to Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa/Niassa) and is found nowhere else on Earth, as confirmed by FishBase and Eschmeyer's Catalog. Within the lake it is unusually widespread for an mbuna: rather than being locked to a single rocky reef like many Pseudotropheus or Maylandia populations, it occurs around much of the shoreline wherever the right habitat exists. malawi.si describes it as widespread throughout the lake wherever shallow bays with submerged vegetation are present, with named regional forms such as 'Narungu', 'Cobwe' and 'Chiloelo'.
The habitat itself is the genus's signature. FishBase gives a depth band of just 3–20 ft and notes the fish is "always in the presence of plants (e.g. Vallisneria sp.)." Ribbink et al. (1983) and Oliver place it on intermediate sandy/rocky shores in shallow water to about 16 ft, associated with beds of Vallisneria aethiopica and Potamogeton growing on sand — a biotope that straddles the classic mbuna rock zone and the open sand. Territorial males favour the margins where rock meets weed; females and juveniles forage out among the plants themselves. In-situ water chemistry for these shallow littoral zones follows the lake generally: hard, alkaline water around pH 7.7–8.6 and conductivity on the order of 210–260 µS/cm, with shallow temperatures typically in the high 70s °F (mid-20s °C). I have not seen chemistry measured specifically at Cyathochromis sites, so those figures are lake-wide littoral values rather than genus-specific.
Ecology & diet
The trophic niche is what makes this genus worth a page of its own. FishBase assigns it a trophic level of 2.0 — fully herbivorous — and the biology note states it "grazes mainly on loose algae from plant leaves." Oliver, following Ribbink et al. (1983), elaborates that it feeds on loose aufwuchs (algae and the small invertebrates living in it) brushed from both rocks and from the leaves of Vallisneria and Potamogeton. malawi.si frames the specialisation sharply: rather than scraping the tightly attached algal film off rock with the dense tooth comb that defines classic mbuna grazers like Labeotropheus, Cyathochromis uses its knife-like, obliquely set bicuspid teeth to cut and pluck the softer epiphytic algae growing on plant surfaces.
That is a real divergence within the mbuna. Where Petrotilapia and Pseudotropheus exploit the rock-surface aufwuchs and Labeotropheus uses a subterminal mouth to rasp rock, Cyathochromis has carved out the plant-leaf grazing niche in the shallow weed beds — a microhabitat most rock specialists do not exploit. Because the genus holds one species, there is no congeneric divergence to report; the divergence that matters is between Cyathochromis and the rest of the mbuna it is phylogenetically embedded in. Its role in the community is that of a quiet, low-trophic-level grazer of the vegetated shallows, and FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low (10/100) with high resilience, consistent with a small, fast-maturing herbivore.
Behaviour & breeding
Socially and reproductively, Cyathochromis behaves like a typical mbuna with a weed-bed twist. Like all Lake Malawi haplochromines it is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them, the male contributing only the conspicuous yellow anal-fin egg-spots that figure in the spawning ritual. Ribbink et al. (1983) describe males as aggressively territorial, chasing conspecifics and other mbuna sharing the intermediate habitat, though they attack non-mbuna cichlids less often. Females, juveniles and non-territorial males live singly or in small loose groups rather than in tight schools.
The nesting behaviour is distinctive. Ribbink et al. report that spawning sites are excavated either among the Vallisneria aethiopica or beneath rocks, and that in dense weed beds males may uproot some plants to clear a spawning pit — a behaviour echoed by malawi.si, which notes males digging burrows beneath stones or excavating pits under or between Vallisneria roots and defending them aggressively through the breeding period. In other words, the genus brings the standard mbuna harem-and-pit spawning strategy into a vegetated substrate that most rock-dwellers avoid. Breeding triggers are the usual ones for the group — good condition, warmth and a defensible territory — with no evidence of any specialised seasonal cue beyond the male securing and clearing his site.
In the aquarium
Honestly, Cyathochromis obliquidens is a fish hobbyists rarely encounter. Oliver notes it is "rarely exported for the aquarium trade," and it has "attractive subtle coloration but is not one of the more colorful mbuna" — which is exactly why it stays niche. For the keeper who does find it, it is a moderately easy mbuna, not a beginner's first fish but well within reach of anyone who has run a Malawi rock tank. malawi.si recommends a tank of about 90 US gal (roughly 90+ US gallons) with fine sand, generous rockwork for territorial boundaries, and patches of hardy Vallisneria — and crucially advises keeping it as a harem of one male with at least three to four females.
The mistakes are predictable mbuna mistakes amplified by this species' habits. First, males are highly territorial toward their own kind: malawi.si is blunt that you should never keep more than one male per tank, and a single male in too small a footprint will bully females relentlessly. Second, the muted Tropheops-like and Astatotilapia calliptera-like colouration creates a real hybridisation risk — mixing Cyathochromis with similarly patterned mbuna in a tank where they will cross-spawn is how you pollute a line, and because pure stock is scarce, that matters more here than with common species. Third, this is a herbivore (trophic level 2.0): a protein-heavy diet invites the digestive disease mbuna keepers call 'bloat' (the malign Malawi-bloat syndrome), so it should be fed a spirulina/algae-based diet, not a carnivore mix. It will graze real plants, so expect Vallisneria to be nibbled and occasionally uprooted at spawning time. Tank-busting size is not a concern at ~6 in (6 in), but personality is — treat it as a standard-aggression mbuna and stock the tank densely to spread aggression, the usual survival strategy for the group as Practical Fishkeeping's mbuna guidance lays out.
Conservation
At the species level the picture is reassuring on paper: the IUCN Red List assessed Cyathochromis obliquidens as Least Concern (assessment dated 22 June 2018, reflected in FishBase's 2025 status feed), reflecting its lake-wide distribution and lack of targeted fishing or trade pressure. Because the genus is monotypic, there is no spread of categories to report — the one species is the genus, and it is LC. It is taken incidentally in artisanal fisheries and only occasionally collected for the aquarium hobby, so direct exploitation is not the concern.
The honest caveat is that a Least Concern endemic is only as safe as its lake, and Lake Malawi is under real strain. Chavula et al. (2023, J. Great Lakes Res. 49(6):102241) document a basin under pressure from over-fishing — the collapse of the chambo (Oreochromis) fishery being the emblematic case — together with sediment and nutrient loading washing off deforested catchments, and a deep-water warming of roughly +33 °F (Vollmer et al. 2005) that strengthens thermal stratification and reduces the mixing that drives lake productivity. For a shallow-water, plant-associated grazer like Cyathochromis, the catchment-driven sedimentation and the loss of clear vegetated littoral habitat are the most plausible long-term threats, more than fishing or collection. Invasive-species risk in the basin adds a further uncertainty. None of this currently threatens the species — but the right framing is exactly that most Lake Malawi endemics, this one included, are individually Least Concern while the system that sustains them is increasingly stressed.
