Cyathopharynx is a small, charismatic genus of sand- and rock-associated cichlids endemic to Lake Tanganyika, the iridescent "featherfins" whose territorial males trail metallic-blue bodies and long, white-tipped pelvic fins. The genus is usually treated as monotypic — only C. furcifer is formally recognized — yet it conceals at least two and probably more cryptic forms, including the still-undescribed northern populations. Its single most remarkable trait is behavioural: males rake the lake floor into broad, volcano-shaped sand bowers up to several meters across, the kind of self-built "extended phenotype" that female choice acts on directly.

Taxonomy & the radiation

The genus was erected by C. Tate Regan in 1920 (Regan 1920:42), with Tilapia grandoculis Boulenger 1899 designated as the type species — a name that is itself now treated as a junior synonym of C. furcifer, so the genus's nominal anchor and its only valid species are the same fish. The name combines Greek kyathos (cup) and pharynx, a reference to the cup-shaped lower pharyngeal bone. The valid species, C. furcifer, was originally described by Boulenger in December 1898 as Paratilapia furcifer (Takahashi & Hori 2012). Three nominal species have been named in the genus over time — furcifer (Boulenger 1898), foae (Vaillant 1899, originally Ectodus foae), and grandoculis (Boulenger 1899) — but Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and the major Tanganyikan checklists (Poll 1986; Maréchal & Poll 1991) sink foae and grandoculis into furcifer, leaving the genus formally monotypic.

Cyathopharynx sits in the endemic Tanganyikan tribe Ectodini, the lake's great radiation of sand-dwelling and bower-building cichlids. Mitochondrial work has been consistent with the monophyly of Cyathopharynx and places it within a clade alongside Ophthalmotilapia (Pellegrin) and Cardiopharynx (Poll) (Takahashi 2003; Takahashi & Hori 2012). Koblmüller, Salzburger & Sturmbauer (2004, J. Mol. Evol.) showed that this sand-dwelling Ectodini lineage repeatedly recolonized rocky habitats and convergently evolved its mating and care systems — an important caution against reading any single "featherfin" trait as a one-off invention. The genus is a textbook miniature of the larger Tanganyikan story: a handful of described forms masking real, geographically structured diversity that the formal taxonomy has not caught up with.

Defining features

Cyathopharynx is a moderately large, deep-bodied ectodine with extreme sexual dimorphism. Territorial males are spectacular — a metallic blue-to-turquoise body washed with iridescent scaling, and greatly elongated pelvic (ventral) fins that end in spatulate, often yellow or white "egg-spot" lappets; females and non-territorial males are a plainer, more uniform silvery grey with normal-length fins (Takahashi & Hori 2012; Seriously Fish). FishBase gives a maximum of about 8 in (8.5 in) total length; field accounts of the northern forms cite territorial males to roughly 8.7 in (8.5 in) with females noticeably smaller at around 5–6 in (4.5–6 in). The genus is diagnosed within Ectodini by a combination of features — a cup-shaped lower pharyngeal bone with a rounded posterior margin and, in males, the long pelvic fins — that occur individually in related genera but are uniquely combined here (Takahashi & Hori 2012).

The practical look-alikes are its close relatives. Ophthalmotilapia (O. ventralis, O. nasuta) shares the long, lappet-tipped pelvic fins and bower behaviour but tends to have a more drawn-out body and differently shaped fin tips; Cyprichromis are slimmer open-water schoolers without the heavy bower-building. Aulonocranus dewindti is sometimes called a "mini featherfin" — similar lek behaviour at half the size. The surest field cue is the combination of a stocky, high iridescence body with very long pelvic fins, set against the sandy lek arenas where males display.

Range & habitat

Cyathopharynx is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and is one of the lake's more widely distributed cichlids, recorded along the shorelines of all four riparian nations — Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, and Zambia (IUCN 2025; FishBase). It is a fish of the intermediate zone: the transition where rocky slopes meet open sand, rather than the rock-rubble that mbuna-style genera prefer. Males establish their breeding territories on sandy or fine-sediment bottoms close to rock, typically at depths of about 16–82 ft (16–82 ft), with the IUCN assessment narrowing the core band to roughly 65–82 ft (66–82 ft) on rocky slopes.

In-situ water is the hard, alkaline, thermally stable water characteristic of Tanganyika's surface layer: FishBase reports pH 8.0–9.0, hardness around 9–19 dH, and temperatures of roughly 75–79°F (75–79 °F). The genus is not uniform across this range. Regional populations differ in body and fin coloration and in the amount of yellow versus black in the unpaired and anal fins, and specialist field guides recognize an undescribed northern entity — Cyathopharynx sp. 'furcifer north' (formerly 'Furcifer Kigoma') — that ranges from around Kigoma north into Burundi and is geographically separated from typical C. furcifer further south (tanganyika.si; African Diving). This geographic structuring is exactly the "taxonomic uncertainty" the IUCN flags.

Ecology & diet

Cyathopharynx feeds low on the food chain — FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.4 — but the sources genuinely disagree on the mechanics, and that disagreement is worth stating plainly. FishBase and the IUCN describe adults as gregarious, drifting plankton-pickers that hang off rocky slopes and take suspended zooplankton and fine particles. Some field-guide accounts instead emphasize grazing of diatoms and unicellular algae from the aufwuchs, noting the long, herbivore-type intestine typical of plant-eating Tanganyikan cichlids (tanganyika.si). The most defensible reading is that Cyathopharynx is a fine-particle micro-feeder whose diet straddles plankton and biocover depending on locality and season, rather than a committed planktivore or a committed grazer — a flexibility consistent with its position in an Ectodini lineage that has repeatedly shifted trophic niche (Koblmüller et al. 2004).

Ecologically the genus occupies the intermediate-zone, lek-forming guild alongside Ophthalmotilapia and Aulonocranus: non-aggressive, plankton- and aufwuchs-feeding fish for most of the year that periodically transform stretches of sand into dense breeding arenas. Because it neither digs deep into rock nor pursues prey, its main community role is as a mid-water and near-bottom particulate feeder and, through bower-building, as a small-scale bioturbator of the sandy substrate.

Behaviour & breeding

Cyathopharynx is a maternal (lek-polygynous) mouthbrooder, and its breeding system is the reason the genus is famous. Outside spawning the fish are loosely gregarious. When a male comes into condition he claims a patch of sand and excavates a large, volcano- or crater-shaped bower — Seriously Fish notes craters up to about 24 in (23.5 in) across in aquaria, and keepers and divers describe far larger structures in the wild, with one experienced hobbyist relaying bowers around 16 ft (16 ft) wide in habitat. Males will also carry sand onto the flat tops of large stones and build there. In nature these bowers are packed side by side into leks (Karino 1997; Schaedelin & Taborsky 2006).

The bower is not just a nest — Schaedelin & Taborsky (2006, Animal Behaviour) showed that the mating craters of C. furcifer are individually specific "extended phenotypes," their size and neatness advertising the owner's size, capability, and condition to females. Karino (1997, Ethology) demonstrated that females prefer males with long, symmetric fins, linking the genus's exaggerated pelvic fins directly to sexual selection. Spawning itself is fast and frenetic: a female deposits eggs in the crater and immediately takes them into her mouth, then nips at the egg-shaped lappets at the tips of the male's long pelvic fins — a decoy that delivers sperm to fertilize the clutch she is already brooding (Seriously Fish). Reported broods are modest, roughly 10–50 eggs/fry, carried for around three weeks before free-swimming fry are released; the male contributes nothing after fertilization.

In the aquarium

This is a beautiful but genuinely demanding genus, and the honest hobbyist consensus is that most people underestimate the space it needs. Adults reach 8 in (8.5 in); Seriously Fish lists a 72 in (71 in) tank as a workable minimum and field-guide keepers push for 130–260+ US gal (500–1000+ L) to let multiple males hold territories and display naturally. The driver isn't aggression toward tankmates so much as the breeding parade itself — experienced keepers describe males charging so hard during courtship that they risk injuring their eyes and face on décor, so they need long, open, sand-bottomed runs, not a rockscape. A deep bed of fine sand is essential for bower construction.

Cyathopharynx should be the dominant species in its tank: if outcompeted, males sulk and lose their color (Seriously Fish). Keep it in a harem — one or a few males to several females — with peaceful, water-confident Tanganyikan tankmates such as Cyprichromis or Altolamprologus, and never with mbuna or boisterous fin-nippers. Within the featherfin group, keepers consistently rate Cyathopharynx as less murderous than wild Ophthalmotilapia ventralis or O. nasuta, which can be brutal toward conspecifics; two males in a long tank often spread aggression better than one. The species is regarded as fairly delicate and slow to mature — males may not develop full color until they are several months old and around 4 in (4 in), and only in top water quality — so it is an intermediate-to-advanced fish, not a beginner's project. Two practical cautions: do not mix Cyathopharynx forms (or congeneric featherfins), which hybridize readily and muddy bloodlines, and resist crowding the tank to suppress aggression, since these are large, space-hungry display animals first and foremost.

Conservation

At the species level the picture is reassuring on paper: C. furcifer was reassessed in March 2025 and listed as Least Concern, on the basis that it is widespread and abundant across Lake Tanganyika with no single overwhelming threat identified (Sibomana 2025, IUCN Red List). Because the genus is effectively monotypic, that one assessment carries the genus. The IUCN nonetheless flags ongoing pressures — local subsistence harvest for food, sedimentation and agricultural/forestry runoff degrading the littoral, and over-collection for the aquarium trade, where wild featherfins are popular and valuable — and explicitly notes a continuing decline in habitat quality plus unresolved taxonomy (the southern population may be a separate species, and an undescribed northern form already circulates among specialists). "Least Concern" here means low extinction risk for a common fish, not an untroubled habitat.

Those habitat caveats matter because Cyathopharynx lives in the exact zone Tanganyika's stressors hit hardest. The lake has warmed and stratified more strongly over the last century, reducing deep mixing and nutrient return; O'Reilly et al. (2003, Nature) linked this to an estimated ~20% decline in primary productivity, and Cohen et al. (2016, PNAS) documented a loss of roughly 38% of the oxygenated benthic habitat available to bottom-associated fishes. A fine-particle feeder tied to oxygenated, rock-and-sand slopes at 16–82 ft sits squarely in the path of both trends, while shoreline deforestation drives the sedimentation that smothers the rocky littoral. None of this is yet shown to be reducing C. furcifer numbers, but it overlays a productivity squeeze and the basin's huge clupeid-and-Lates pelagic fishery — which feeds four nations and is coordinated, imperfectly, through the Lake Tanganyika Authority. The fair summary is that the genus is currently secure but lives in a strained lake whose long-term trajectory is the real conservation question.
