Cyathopharynx foae is one of the two currently recognized 'featherfin' cichlids of Lake Tanganyika, a sand-dwelling, lek-breeding relative of the far more widely known and more broadly distributed Cyathopharynx furcifer. Like its congener, males build volcano-shaped sand bowers on the lake floor and court females with dramatically elongated pelvic-fin filaments, but foae is known from a more restricted part of the lake and is far less represented in the aquarium trade. The CARES Preservation Program lists it as Vulnerable.

Taxonomy & naming

Cyathopharynx foae was described by the French zoologist Léon Vaillant in 1899, in the period when several European-led expeditions to the Congo Free State and the African Great Lakes were bringing back the first substantial collections of Lake Tanganyika's cichlid fauna. The original combination placed the species in a different genus from its current one, as the parenthetical authorship '(Vaillant, 1899)' indicates; it has since been placed in Cyathopharynx Boulenger, 1898, the genus Boulenger had erected a year earlier for the type species, Cyathopharynx furcifer. For long stretches of twentieth-century taxonomy, foae was treated by many authors as a synonym or population-level variant of the widespread and highly variable C. furcifer, whose many named colour forms and location variants (including 'blue flush', 'green flush' and 'neon streak' populations, among dozens of named collection points around the lake) reflect just how much geographic variation exists within that species alone. Cyathopharynx foae is currently maintained as the valid second species of the genus, distinguished from furcifer on the basis of morphological and, in some treatments, molecular evidence, though a full account of the precise diagnostic characters separating the two is not confirmed in the sources available for this article.

Morphology

Cyathopharynx foae shares the general body plan of the genus: a deep-bodied, laterally compressed sand-cichlid with a small, slightly upturned mouth adapted for picking food items from the substrate. The genus's hallmark feature is present in males of both species — greatly elongated, thread-like extensions to the pelvic fins, sometimes described as 'featherfin' filaments, which are erected and displayed during courtship. Habitat

Cyathopharynx foae is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, the ancient rift lake shared by Tanzania, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. It occupies the sandy, open substrate typical of the genus, generally along the transition zone between rocky and sandy habitat rather than deep in either extreme. Mating

The genus Cyathopharynx is well known for one of the most elaborate mating systems among Tanganyikan cichlids: males construct large, volcano-shaped sand bowers on open substrate, often gathering in loose leks of neighbouring bower-builders, and court passing females by erecting their long pelvic-fin filaments and performing quivering displays at the bower's rim.
