Taxonomy & naming
Awaous keralaensis was described by Philippe Keith and Marion I. Mennesson in 2026 in Cybium, as part of a revision of the genus Awaous (Teleostei: Oxudercidae) from Indo-Pacific islands that combined mitochondrial COI and ND2 sequencing with morphological comparison. The revision recognised fifteen valid species across the genus and described four new ones, three of them — A. dayi, A. keralaensis and A. myanmarensis — in the same paper. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Awaous keralaensis Keith & Mennesson, 2026 as valid, placed in family Oxudercidae, subfamily Gobionellinae.
The holotype (NTM S15937-001, held at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin) was collected from the Kalindi River, North Kanara, on India's Malabar coast; paratypes are held at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (Paris), the Swedish Museum of Natural History (Stockholm), and the Northern Territory Museum. North Kanara (present-day Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka) lies just north of the state of Kerala on the same Malabar coastal belt, and the species epithet references that wider Kerala–Malabar region rather than the type locality's exact administrative state.
