Awaous myanmarensis was described by Philippe Keith and Marion I. Mennesson in 2026 in Cybium, in a revision of the genus Awaous (Teleostei: Oxudercidae) from Indo-Pacific islands that combined mitochondrial COI and ND2 sequencing with morphological comparison across the genus. The revision recognised fifteen valid Awaous species and described four new ones, three of which — A. dayi, A. keralaensis and A. myanmarensis — appeared in that paper. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Awaous myanmarensis Keith & Mennesson, 2026 as valid, in family Oxudercidae, subfamily Gobionellinae.
The holotype (NRM 69600, formerly catalogued as NRM 58023, held at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, Stockholm) was collected from Powathaing Chaung — chaung being the Burmese word for stream or creek — in Myanmar; paratypes are held at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (Paris) and the Swedish Museum of Natural History, along with additional non-type comparative material examined in the revision.
