Taxonomy & naming
Butis humeralis was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1849 from specimens collected at Macassar (present-day Makassar) on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, and the Catalog of Fishes places it in the genus Butis Cuvier, 1816, family Eleotridae. No junior synonyms are currently recognised, and the species is treated as monotypic. The genus Butis belongs to a grouping sometimes separated as the family Butidae, but the Catalog of Fishes retains the broader family-level treatment as Eleotridae; both framings are encountered in the literature.
The most important thing taxonomy clarifies about this fish is what it is not: although its popular name carries the word "goby" by trade convention, Butis humeralis is an eleotrid sleeper, not a true goby. True gobies (families Gobiidae, Gobionellidae and Oxudercidae) possess pelvic fins that are united into a cup-shaped sucker disc used to cling to substrate; eleotrids retain two separate, free pelvic fins. In the hand or in a photograph this character distinguishes the lineages immediately. The sleepers and gudgeons belong to a different branch of the Gobioidei than the true gobies, and their evolutionary and biogeographic story is distinct.
This fish was long listed as Butis melanostigma; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now treats that name as a synonym of Butis humeralis, the valid name followed here.
Morphology
Butis humeralis is a small, elongate, somewhat wedge-shaped fish that reaches approximately 2–2.8 in standard length in adults. The body is compressed and tapers rearward from a broad, flattened head; the mouth is wide and slightly upturned, well suited to an ambush-predator lifestyle. Ground coloration is pale brown to olive-grey, overlaid with irregular dark mottling and — as the species name signals — a scattering of distinct black spots or blotches on the body and fins. The pelvic fins are free and separate, the defining eleotrid character.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle: males tend to run slightly larger and develop somewhat brighter or more intense spotting at breeding condition, and females show a fuller abdomen when gravid, but outside of spawning condition the sexes can be difficult to distinguish without close inspection. The species lacks the vivid colour and pronounced nuchal hump of the peacock gudgeon and other showier eleotrids, its appeal lying more in pattern, behaviour, and nocturnal habit than in gaudy coloration.
Habitat
In nature, Butis humeralis inhabits freshwater and lightly brackish streams, slow-moving tributaries, blackwater drains, and sheltered backwaters across Indonesia — particularly Sulawesi and Kalimantan — and Papua New Guinea. It is a benthic, cover-dependent species that hides during daylight hours among dense aquatic vegetation, submerged wood, rocky crevices, and accumulated leaf litter, emerging primarily at night to feed.
Water conditions across the natural range span a moderate thermal and chemical range: temperatures of approximately 72–82 °F, pH around 6.5–7.5, and salinity from fresh to lightly brackish (up to around 5–8 ppt). The species is not a permanent estuarine resident in the manner of Eleotris or Dormitator, and it does not depend on marine access at any life stage; it is a resident freshwater and marginally brackish fish whose entire lifecycle takes place in inland waters. Many localities in Sulawesi and Kalimantan are associated with the soft, often tea-coloured blackwater drainage of lowland forest streams.
Feeding
Butis humeralis is a micro-predator. In the wild it takes small crustaceans, insect larvae, and micro-invertebrates from the substrate and among cover, hunting by ambush and short dashes rather than by sustained pursuit. It is nocturnal in feeding habit, most active after dark, and tends to sit motionless or creep slowly through vegetation and along the bottom before striking.
In the aquarium, offer small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and similar meaty invertebrates match its natural diet and maintain condition and colour. Larger specimens will also take small ghost shrimp or insect larvae. Many individuals refuse dry flake altogether, and a diet of flake alone typically leads to weight loss and loss of vigour over time. As with most ambush-predator eleotrids, varied live and frozen food is not optional — it is the core of the feeding regime.
Mating
Butis humeralis is a resident cave or substrate spawner, not amphidromous — its full mating and breeding cycle takes place in fresh or lightly brackish water without any marine phase, which distinguishes it sharply from the amphidromous Sicydiinae and many Awaous and Stenogobius gobies. In captivity, pairs form loose bonds and spawn in sheltered sites: rocky crevices, ceramic caves, clay pots, hollow driftwood, or similar cover within the tank.
Courtship is low-key and largely nocturnal. A conditioned male selects and defends a spawning site, patrolling and chasing rivals or intruders; a ripe female, identified by a rounder, fuller abdomen, is courted into the chosen refuge. Pairs that are well conditioned on live and frozen foods, kept in a quiet, shaded, well-covered tank and brought into slightly cooler water before a gradual warm-up appear to spawn more readily than those maintained in bare or brightly lit setups.
Breeding
Spawning follows the eleotrid cave-guarding pattern: the female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the rock, driftwood, or ceramic surface inside the chosen refuge, then departs, and the male takes over sole guardianship, fanning the eggs with his fins and keeping the site clean until hatching. At around 75 °F, hatching typically takes approximately 7–10 days. The fry are initially very small and require micro-foods — infusoria and other fine foods at first, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and microworms as they grow.
Because the whole cycle is completed in fresh or brackish water with no larval marine phase, captive breeding is genuinely achievable. The key conditions are a well-covered spawning tank with appropriate caves, a varied conditioning diet of live and frozen foods, and the avoidance of bright lighting that suppresses nocturnal activity. The male's guarding behaviour means the clutch is actively defended; moving the egg-bearing cave to a rearing vessel can improve fry survival if other tank inhabitants or the female pose a risk.
In the aquarium
Butis humeralis suits a quiet, low-light species tank or a peaceful community where it will not be outcompeted at feeding time. Because it is nocturnal and cryptic, the standard advice applies with extra force: provide plenty of caves, hollow driftwood, clay shelters and dense planting, and expect to see the fish mainly in the hours after the lights dim. A well-planted tank with a dark substrate and low, diffuse lighting shows the species at its best and encourages more daytime movement as the fish gains confidence.
Tank size should reflect the adult length of 2–2.8 in SL; a species pair can be kept in a modest setup, but adequate cover and line-of-sight breaks between males reduce territorial skirmishes. The tank must be covered: like most eleotrids it is a capable jumper. Water should be maintained in the 72–82 °F range at pH 6.5–7.5; a small addition of marine salt (to 2–5 ppt) is tolerated and may reduce stress, but it is not obligatory for fish kept in fresh water. Feed exclusively on live and frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops — and do not rely on dry foods. Tankmates should be peaceful, similarly sized, and not fast enough to outcompete a slow, ambush-oriented nocturnal feeder at the food dish.
Conservation
Butis humeralis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2019), reflecting its broad distribution across Indonesia and Papua New Guinea and the absence of identified major threats across most of that range. The species occurs in both freshwater and lightly brackish systems, giving it habitat flexibility that buffers it against localised disturbance to any single water type.
That said, its core range in Sulawesi and Kalimantan coincides with some of the most rapidly deforested lowland landscapes in South-East Asia, and localised declines in specific river systems are plausible even if range-wide population trends do not trigger an elevated threat category. The species appears in the local aquarium trade and is occasionally exported, but trade volume is modest and, given that it is a resident spawner capable of captive breeding, the trade relies less on wild collection than is the case for amphidromous gobies. Buyers seeking captive-bred stock benefit the wild population; hobbyists who successfully breed this fish contribute to reducing that wild-collection pressure.
