Aphaniops richardsoni is the toothcarp of the Dead Sea basin — a small, saline-water specialist confined to the freshwater and brackish springs that seep out along the Dead Sea's western shore in Israel and the West Bank, most famously at the Ein Feshkha and Ein Gedi oases. Long treated as a local subspecies of the wide-ranging Arabian killifish (Aphanius dispar), it has since been recognised as a distinct species restricted to one of the most rapidly changing bodies of water on Earth. As the Dead Sea's surface has fallen by more than a metre a year for decades under regional water diversion, the spring systems the fish depends on have shrunk, dried, or retreated downslope, and the CARES Fish Preservation Program lists it as a conservation-priority species under its older name, Aphanius dispar 'richardsoni'.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1907, originally as Cyprinodon richardsoni, from material collected in the Dead Sea basin. The parenthetical authority in the current combination reflects that the genus placement has changed since description. For most of the twentieth century the fish was treated as a subspecies or local population of the wide-ranging Aphanius dispar (Rüppell, 1828) — the Arabian killifish that occupies coastal and inland saline waters from Egypt and the Levant to Oman and Iran — and it still appears under the trinomial-style designation Aphanius dispar 'richardsoni' on the CARES Fish Preservation Program priority list. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now recognises richardsoni as a full species in its own right, and — following the same genus-level revision that carried A. dispar itself into the resurrected genus Aphaniops — the currently valid combination is Aphaniops richardsoni (Boulenger, 1907).

The species' isolation in the Dead Sea basin, a closed hypersaline lake more than 1312 ft below sea level and separated from the coastal populations of A. dispar by the arid highlands of the Judean Desert and the Negev, is the geological context for its distinctness: the basin has likely been isolated from other Aphaniidae-bearing drainages for a very long period, allowing the local population to diverge morphologically and genetically from its nearest relatives even while retaining the family's characteristic tolerance for extreme, mineral-rich water.

Morphology

Detailed, species-specific morphometric data for Aphaniops richardsoni is sparse in the sources consulted; the species has historically been measured and described alongside its close relative A. dispar rather than in dedicated accounts. As in that species, Aphaniops richardsoni is a small, stout-bodied killifish, likely reaching a similar range of roughly 2–3 in standard length, with females generally larger-bodied than males. The body is laterally compressed and deep through the flanks, the head blunt, and the mouth upturned — the standard Aphaniidae template for a fish that feeds at and near the water surface.

Sexual dimorphism follows the family pattern and is reliable for field identification. Habitat

Aphaniops richardsoni is restricted to the freshwater and brackish spring systems along the margins of the Dead Sea, in Israel and the West Bank — most notably the Ein Feshkha nature reserve and the springs near Ein Gedi on the western shore, with additional occurrences reported from spring-fed pools and wadi outflows elsewhere around the basin. These are warm, mineral-rich waters typical of the Dead Sea rift environment: hard, alkaline to circumneutral, and often with elevated salinity where spring water mixes with the hypersaline lake itself before evaporating or seeping back into the ground.

The Dead Sea basin sits more than 1312 ft below sea level, the lowest land elevation on Earth, and its climate is hot and hyper-arid year-round; spring temperatures at these oases are consequently warm, plausibly in the low-to-mid 20s °C through the high 20s in summer, broadly consistent with the wide thermal tolerance documented for the closely related A. dispar. As in that species, richardsoni is a non-annual killifish of permanent water and does not depend on seasonal desiccation.

The defining pressure on this habitat is the Dead Sea's own rapid decline: the lake's surface level has fallen dramatically over the past half-century as the Jordan River and other regional inflows have been diverted for agriculture and municipal supply upstream. As the lake recedes, the spring outflows the fish depends on retreat and shrink correspondingly, and some historically documented spring pools have dried entirely or been reduced to remnants.

Feeding

In the aquarium

Aphaniops richardsoni is not an established aquarium fish; it is essentially unknown in the general hobby trade, and any captive material is likely to be held by a very small number of specialist killifish keepers or research/conservation institutions with direct access to Dead Sea basin material. Prospective keepers should not expect to source this species commercially, and wild collection from its already stressed spring habitat is not appropriate.

Where the species is maintained, husbandry would be expected to follow the template of its close relative A. dispar: hard, alkaline water with a modest salt addition (reflecting the naturally brackish character of its native springs), a secure lid against jumping, and warm, stable temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s °C. As with all conservation-priority Aphaniidae, any captive holdings are best managed through documented, coordinated breeding programmes rather than casual hobbyist trade, to preserve what may be a very limited founder gene pool.

Aphaniops richardsoni carries a CARES Fish Preservation Program priority listing, recorded there under the historical designation Aphanius dispar 'richardsoni' and classified Endangered (CEN) — placing it among the hobby's recognised conservation-priority species, alongside several of its Anatolian and Iranian relatives.

The overriding threat to the species is the well-documented, ongoing decline of the Dead Sea itself. Upstream diversion of the Jordan River and other regional water sources for agriculture and municipal supply in Israel, Jordan, and Syria has starved the lake of inflow for decades, and its surface level has fallen by roughly a metre per year through much of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries — one of the most dramatic sustained water-level declines of any lake on Earth. As the lake recedes, the freshwater and brackish spring systems along its margins — precisely the habitat Aphaniops richardsoni depends on — are pulled downslope, fragmented, or lost outright, and the karstic sinkhole collapses associated with the receding shoreline further destabilise the terrain around remaining springs.

Additional pressures include groundwater extraction for regional agriculture and the mineral-extraction industry active on the Dead Sea's southern basin, both of which compete directly with the springs for the same limited freshwater inputs. Conservation of the species is inseparable from the much larger, politically complex question of Dead Sea water management; localised protection of remaining spring sites such as Ein Feshkha, combined with any programme to stabilise regional freshwater allocation, would be the most direct routes to improving its prospects.
