Taxonomy & naming
Diapteron seegersi was described by the French killifish researcher Jean H. Huber in 1980, in the journal of the German killifish association (DKG-Journal, vol. 12, no. 1), as Aphyosemion (Diapteron) seegersi. The name had circulated earlier — Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes notes it appeared as a nomen nudum in 1977 — but it dates formally from the 1980 description. The type locality is a small brook under forest cover 35 kilometres south of Sembé, on the track toward Mekambo (Gabon), in the upper Ivindo basin of the Republic of the Congo; the holotype is in the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris (MNHN 1979-0282).
The subgenus Diapteron Huber & Seegers, 1977 — from Greek roots meaning 'shifted fin', for the forward-set dorsal fin — groups five dwarf forest killifish of the Ivindo region: D. georgiae, D. fulgens, D. cyanostictum, D. abacinum, and D. seegersi. Later authors, including Seegers (1997) and Huber (1999), treated Diapteron as a full genus, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the current valid name as Diapteron seegersi (Huber, 1980), the parentheses reflecting the change of genus since the original description. The group sits within the order Cyprinodontiformes and the family Nothobranchiidae.
The species epithet honours the German ichthyologist, aquarist, and photographer Lothar Seegers (1947–2018), co-author of the genus name and a major contributor to killifish research; Huber applied it, in his own words, 'as a sign of my friendship and my admiration for his remarkable research'.
This fish was long listed as Aphyosemion seegersi; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Diapteron, and the current combination Diapteron seegersi is followed here.
Morphology
Diapteron seegersi is a dwarf killifish: the type specimen measured 0.93 in in total length, and FishBase credits the species with a maximum of about 1.4 in total length. The build is that of the genus — a small, slender, laterally compressed fish with a slightly upturned mouth suited to taking small prey at and just below the surface, and a dorsal fin set noticeably far forward compared with typical Aphyosemion, the character behind the genus name Diapteron ('shifted fin').
Published detail on live colouration is thin, because the species is known from so little material. Following the original description, the male shows a yellowish ground with the lower edges of the caudal and anal fins brightly orange, recalling D. georgiae; the Diapteron project's summary of the original account also notes a conspicuously extended lower caudal-fin edge in one specimen. Females, as throughout the genus, are expected to be cryptically brownish and plain-finned.
Because the Diapteron species are small and superficially similar, and because the assignment of later collections to D. seegersi remains disputed, locality data carries unusual weight in identifying this fish.
Habitat
Diapteron seegersi is known with certainty only from its type locality: a small brook under closed forest cover in the upper Ivindo drainage, about 22 mi south of Sembé in the northwestern Republic of the Congo, near the watershed border with Gabon. The IUCN assessment records one additional point locality in northeastern Gabon; the assignment of later Diapteron collections to this species has been questioned in the specialist hobby literature. These are permanent waters — the fish's non-annual life history is a direct reflection of that permanence.
The habitat matches that of the other Diapteron species: shallow, heavily shaded rainforest brooks with leaf litter, soft and acidic water, and temperatures that stay cool for equatorial Africa. No species-specific water measurements have been published; for the closely related D. fulgens and D. georgiae, FishBase gives 64–72 °F (64–72 °F), and specialist keepers regard similarly cool, soft, acidic conditions as characteristic of the genus. Flow is gentle to negligible.
Dense cover — leaf litter, trailing roots, and overhanging vegetation — provides both refuge from predators and the fine structure these fish use for egg deposition in the congeners whose spawning has been observed.
Feeding
Like its congeners, Diapteron seegersi is presumed to be a micro-predator of small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the surface of its forest brook. Nothing has been published on the diet of this species specifically; the upward-angled mouth typical of the genus suits picking items from just below the surface film.
In the aquarium — should the species ever be collected and maintained — feeding would be expected to follow the pattern of the other Diapteron: small live foods such as newly hatched artemia, micro-worms, and daphnia offered in small portions in cool, clean water, with live and frozen items strongly preferred over dry foods. Overfeeding degrades water quality quickly in the small, lightly filtered, soft-water setups these fish require.
Mating
No spawning observations have been published for Diapteron seegersi. The genus is non-annual: its species live in permanent forest water and deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs over an extended period rather than laying a mass clutch in bottom soil for a dry-season diapause — the defining behavioural contrast with annual African killies such as Nothobranchius.
In the congeners that have been bred, males court females with a lateral display of the coloured flanks, guide a willing partner alongside a plant stem or mop fibre, and spawn side-by-side with a brief, gentle body press, one or a few eggs at a time, repeated over hours or days. The same pattern can reasonably be expected of D. seegersi, but it has not been documented for this species.
In the genus generally, eggs are adhesive and cling to plant material without burial or further parental attention; there is no programmed developmental arrest (diapause), and eggs proceed directly to development in water.
Breeding
Diapteron seegersi has not been bred in captivity — the Diapteron project's species summary concludes it was presumably never in the hobby, and no captive accounts exist. Its reproductive biology therefore remains undocumented.
If stock were ever available, breeding would presumably follow the demanding protocol worked out by specialists for D. georgiae and D. cyanostictum: a small, mature, cool (around 64–72 °F), soft, acidic species tank; fine-leaved plants or dark wool mops as the adhesive spawning substrate; a slow, continuous trickle of eggs rather than large clutches; and patient rearing of small fry on newly hatched live foods with disciplined small water changes. Diapteron are regarded among killifish keepers as a specialist's genus, with low egg output and slow-growing fry compared with the more familiar Aphyosemion species.
Whether D. seegersi shares the extended incubation and cool-water sensitivity of its better-known congeners is an open question that only recollection and maintenance of the species can answer.
In the aquarium
Diapteron seegersi is not available in the aquarium hobby and, as far as the specialist literature records, never has been. Killifish keepers who work with the genus do so with D. georgiae, D. cyanostictum, and occasionally D. fulgens or D. abacinum, all of which demand the same core conditions: small, mature, dimly lit species tanks; soft, acidic, tannin-tinged water kept cool (about 64–72 °F — no heater for much of the year in temperate homes); gentle sponge or air-driven filtration without turbulence; dense fine-leaved planting or dark wool mops; and live foods. A tight-fitting cover is essential — killifish are notorious jumpers.
If D. seegersi is ever recollected, it would be a fish for experienced Diapteron keepers, and documenting the collection locality — the cornerstone of good killifish practice — would matter more than usual given the standing uncertainty over which Diapteron populations belong to this species. Like all fish in the group, it would benefit from hobbyist attention to strain integrity: recording and sharing locality data preserves the genetic and biogeographic information that makes the genus taxonomically interesting.
Conservation
Diapteron seegersi is assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2009, published 2010). The assessment reflects genuine ignorance rather than security: the species is known from its type locality in the upper Ivindo drainage of the northwestern Republic of the Congo plus a single point record in northeastern Gabon, and there is no information on population size, trend, or specific threats.
The forest canopy over these brooks is not merely scenic backdrop: it regulates temperature, reduces siltation, and maintains the tannin chemistry and low pH the fauna depends on. A fish known from one or two brooks could be lost to local habitat change without ever being recorded again, and resurvey of the Sembé–Mekambo border area is the obvious research priority for the species.
Because D. seegersi has never been established in aquaria, there is no ex-situ population to fall back on — a contrast with its congeners, for which locality-documented hobby strains provide a real buffer against loss at the collection sites. Any future collection should prioritise careful documentation and the establishment of maintained lines alongside formal survey work.
