Taxonomy & naming
Laimosemion mahdiaense was formally described by Wim Suijker and Collier in 2006 in Zootaxa 1246: 1–13. The original description placed the fish in the genus Rivulus, the large catch-all genus that historically housed most South American rivulines; the species has since been reassigned to Laimosemion following revisions that progressively dismembered the old Rivulus into a series of more natural genera. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Laimosemion mahdiaense (Suijker & Collier, 2006).
The species epithet mahdiaensis is a toponym derived from Mahdia, the small goldmining settlement in Potaro-Siparuni Region of central Guyana near which Suijker and colleagues first collected the species in 1995. The genus name Laimosemion was erected to accommodate a group of South American rivulines from the Guianas and adjacent northern South America that share a cluster of morphological and biogeographic characters setting them apart from the Rivulus of the Atlantic Forest and the Cynolebias lineage.
The American Killifish Association (AKA) catalogues the species under its former name Rivulus mahdiaensis and assigns it the location code GUY-1997-05, reflecting the Guyana provenance of the primary reference collection. JAKA (Journal of the American Killifish Association) has published notes on the species in 2008, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2023, documenting husbandry experience accumulated by North American killifish specialists since the fish entered the hobby.
This fish was long listed as Laimosemion mahdiaensis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Laimosemion, and the current combination Laimosemion mahdiaense is followed here.
Morphology
Laimosemion mahdiaense is a slender, cylindrical rivuline reaching approximately 1.8 in standard length, a size recorded from the It Rains Fishes species account and broadly consistent with other small Laimosemion. The body form is typical of the genus: elongate and torpedo-shaped, with a slightly flattened dorsal profile, a terminal mouth suited to surface feeding, and rounded fins. The caudal fin is moderately rounded.
The species' colouration, as documented by aquarists who have kept it, includes the iridescent lateral patterning and spot or band elements characteristic of Guianan rivulines. Males display more vivid colours and pattern contrast than females, a pronounced sexual dimorphism common across the South American rivulines. Females are typically plainer and more cryptic, a pattern consistent with the mating system. Published meristics from FishBase confirm the 1.8 in SL maximum; detailed fin-ray counts are in the original Zootaxa description.
Habitat
The type locality is a blackwater creek in swampy, inundated primary forest near Mahdia, in the drainage of a tributary of the Potaro River in central Guyana. The Potaro is itself a tributary of the Essequibo, one of Guyana's major river systems. The habitat is typical Guianan lowland forest wetland: slow or near-still water darkened by dissolved organic acids from leaf litter and peat, low in dissolved minerals, and soft to very soft.
The American Killifish Association records two location data points for the species: Blackwater Creek (GUY-1997-05, Guyana) and the Mahdia area of Guiana more broadly, both at high confidence. The inundated primary forest setting means that water levels and habitat connectivity fluctuate seasonally with rainfall, but the species is classed as non-annual — it inhabits water that persists year-round or at least long enough to complete multiple breeding cycles without the fish resorting to drought-resistant diapausing eggs.
FishBase categorises the species as benthopelagic and freshwater tropical, with a resilience rating of high and a minimum population doubling time of less than 15 months — the latter a measure of demographic recovery potential rather than a direct survival statistic.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Laimosemion mahdiaense a trophic level of 3.3 ± 0.4, placing it in the lower carnivore to insectivore range typical of small killifishes. In its blackwater forest habitat, the natural diet consists primarily of small invertebrates — aquatic and terrestrial insects, microcrustaceans, worms, and small zooplankton — taken at and near the water surface or in the water column, consistent with the terminal mouth position.
In captivity the species is reported to accept a range of live and frozen invertebrate foods. Newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) are confirmed as a suitable food for fry, and adult fish can be maintained on a varied diet of live Daphnia, Cyclops, bloodworm, and similar small invertebrate offerings. As with most killifishes, a diet with good variety and a strong live-food component maintains colour and condition most effectively.
Mating
Laimosemion mahdiaense is a non-annual killifish with a plant-spawning reproductive strategy. Males court females actively; the species is noted for male aggression, and experienced keepers recommend keeping single pairs or maintaining a sex ratio that limits male-to-male conflict. In aquarium settings a single pair per vessel is the standard approach.
Courting behaviour follows the typical rivuline pattern: males display lateral colouration and circle or drive females toward spawning sites among fine-leaved plants, roots, or floating spawning mops. It Rains Fishes documents that the pair deposit 5 to 15 eggs per day over extended periods, placing individual adhesive eggs on the spawning medium rather than releasing a mass clutch. The eggs are amber-coloured and measure approximately 0.06 in in diameter. An interesting secondary observation from the It Rains Fishes account is that lowering pH at the time of egg incubation or hatching increases the proportion of females in the resulting brood — a pH-dependent sex-ratio effect documented in a handful of killifish species.
Breeding
Because Laimosemion mahdiaense is non-annual, its eggs incubate in water without diapause. At typical aquarium temperatures the incubation period is approximately 14 days, after which fry hatch and are immediately free-swimming. Newly hatched fry are large enough to accept freshly hatched Artemia nauplii as a first food, which simplifies early rearing considerably. The lifespan recorded in captivity is around 2.5 years, which is relatively generous for a killifish of this size and genus.
Breeding is readily achieved in a small vessel — It Rains Fishes notes that a 10-litre aquarium with peat moss or gravel and simple aeration is sufficient. A floating spawning mop of synthetic or natural fibre is the standard spawning medium, and eggs can be collected from the mop every few days for separate incubation in small containers of aquarium water. Consistent, small water changes and stable temperature support continuous spawning across the pair's active period. The species is described as easily bred, making it a good entry point into South American rivulines for killifish newcomers.
One husbandry caution noted by It Rains Fishes is the species' jumping ability, which is rated high — a fully sealed or covered aquarium is essential, as for most killies.
In the aquarium
Laimosemion mahdiaense is a well-regarded specialist killifish in North American killifish circles, with an active husbandry record documented through the American Killifish Association and JAKA. It is undemanding in terms of space — a 10-litre tank can support a breeding pair — and tolerant of standard soft, acidic water conditions consistent with its Guianan blackwater origin. The aquarium should be soft, warm, and slightly acidic, with adequate cover of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops.
Because males can be aggressive toward one another and toward females outside of breeding receptivity, the safest approach is to keep a single pair and provide sufficient visual breaks in the décor. The tight-fitting cover is non-negotiable given the species' jumping tendency. Tankmates, if any, should be similarly small, soft-water species that will not compete aggressively at the surface; most keepers maintain rivulines as species-only or with very small peaceful companions.
The species' ready breeding behaviour, manageable size, and the hobbyist documentation available through AKA and JAKA make it accessible to anyone with prior experience of small killifishes. It is distributed within the specialist killifish hobby primarily through killifish associations and fish-of-the-month programmes rather than through mainstream ornamental trade channels.
Conservation
Laimosemion mahdiaense has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; its status is listed as Not Evaluated (NE) across all sources consulted, including FishBase and the AKA database. No formal population assessment, range survey, or threat analysis appears in the published record.
The species is known from a restricted area in central Guyana — blackwater creek habitat in the Potaro River drainage near Mahdia. The Potaro-Siparuni Region where it was collected is an interior mining district, and gold mining — the economic activity that gave Mahdia its name — is a known driver of aquatic habitat degradation in Guyana, through sedimentation, mercury contamination, and direct physical disturbance of streambeds and riparian forest. These pressures are relevant to any small-range endemic in the region, though no specific data on the impact on this species' population are available.
The species' high resilience score (FishBase) and its successful establishment in captive breeding programmes through killifish clubs provide a degree of insurance against the loss of wild populations, but this is not a substitute for in-situ conservation. A range survey and formal IUCN assessment would be a valuable first step toward understanding the species' true conservation status.
