Matilebias affinis is a small annual killifish native to the Uruguay River basin, where it lives out its entire life cycle — rarely more than a single wet season — in tiny, shallow temporary pools across the Uruguayan and southern Brazilian lowlands. Males dress in vivid iridescent patterns to compete for females in waters that may persist only a few months before evaporating entirely; the species survives the dry season locked inside buried, drought-resistant eggs that wait in the sun-baked mud until seasonal rains return. The IUCN assessed it as Vulnerable in 2007, reflecting an ongoing collapse of its floodplain habitat across a basin that has lost more than 90 per cent of its original forest cover.

Taxonomy & naming

Matilebias affinis was first described by Jorge Amato in 1986 under the name Cynolebias affinis, based on material from the Uruguay River drainage of southern South America. The parentheses around the authority in the current combination — (Amato, 1986) — indicate that the original genus Cynolebias has since been split and the species transferred. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) recognises the valid combination as Matilebias affinis (Amato, 1986).

Several synonyms accumulated under the old Cynolebias framework: Cynolebias duraznensis Reichert, 1992, and Cynolebias mabelis Hoetmer, 1987 were independently described from overlapping Uruguayan localities and are now treated as junior synonyms. The synonymy history is documented in the GBIF taxonomic backbone (species ID 2349011) and reflects the common pattern in South American annual killifish, where locally variable populations were repeatedly described as new species before modern systematic revisions united them.

The genus Austrolebias — from austro-, Latin for 'southern', and lebias, a Greek term for a small fish — was erected to accommodate the large and diverse annual killifish of the southern South American cone. The specific epithet affinis is Latin for 'related to' or 'allied with', often applied when a describer considered a species closely allied to an already-named taxon.

This fish was long listed as Austrolebias affinis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Matilebias, and the current combination Matilebias affinis is followed here.

Morphology

Matilebias affinis is one of the smaller members of its genus: FishBase records a maximum total length of 2 in, and GBIF morphometric data from the original and subsequent collections place the largest measured male at 1.27 in standard length and the largest female at 1.15 in SL. Males are slightly larger than females on average, as is typical in the genus.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as in most Austrolebias. Males develop conspicuous iridescent patterning — blues, greens, or turquoise ground colours offset by darker vertical barring or spotting — that serves as a display signal in the brief courtship sequences carried out at the pool bottom. Females are cryptically coloured, typically pale olive or brownish with indistinct mottling, which provides camouflage while they rest near the substrate. Fins in males are often exaggerated relative to body size, with the dorsal and anal fins extending into ornamental soft-ray filaments in breeding condition.

The body form is typical of the Austrolebias group: laterally compressed, relatively deep-bodied, with the dorsal fin set far back and the anal fin long, both meeting near the caudal peduncle. The mouth is upturned and the jaw is well-developed for seizing small invertebrate prey. Because the fish lives in shallow, often turbid pools with soft substrates, the eyes are relatively large.

Habitat

This species is endemic to the Uruguay River basin, occupying seasonal and intermittent freshwater pools in Brazil and Uruguay. The IUCN assessment describes its habitat as very small, shallow temporary pools of less than 8 hectares — the ephemeral seep ponds, floodplain potholes, and wet-season puddles that form in the Pampa grasslands and gallery-forest margins during the rainy season, typically lasting only a few months before drying completely. The species is benthopelagic, spending its life at or near the soft mud and detritus bottom where spawning takes place.

Water conditions in these pools tend toward neutrality to moderate acidity. Aquarium-keeper experience documented on Killi.co.uk places the preferred range at roughly neutral to slightly acidic pH and moderately soft water, consistent with FishBase's freshwater designation, with temperatures between 18 and 75 °F matching the mild-temperate climate of southern Uruguay. These are not the black-water, highly acidic, ultra-soft conditions of some Amazonian annuals — the Uruguay basin pools are seasonal Pampean waters with somewhat higher mineral content than Amazonian equivalents.

The species' extent of occurrence is estimated by the IUCN at 53,367 mi², but within that range the species is restricted to the small, scattered temporary pools that form each wet season. Population size is therefore highly discontinuous — each pool supports an isolated subpopulation that must re-establish from buried eggs after the dry season, with no connectivity to adjacent pools while they remain dry.

Feeding

Like most annual killifish, Matilebias affinis is a predatory opportunist whose diet in the wild is composed chiefly of small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and other zooplankton-scale prey that are abundant in the temporary pools it inhabits during the wet season. The shallow, nutrient-rich pools in which it lives are typically rich in invertebrate life, particularly following the first seasonal rains when decomposing organic material from the previous dry season fuels a rapid bloom of small aquatic prey.

In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen foods readily — Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, bloodworms (Chironomus larvae), and tubifex are all standard fare. Dry foods are sometimes accepted but live or frozen prey best maintains condition and colour in males. Juveniles are reared on baby brine shrimp (BBS) from the first day of free-swimming, and the transition to larger frozen foods follows rapidly as the fish grow at the fast rate typical of annual species.

Mating

Matilebias affinis is an annual peat-spawning killifish. Courtship takes place at the pool bottom — the male approaches the female with an elaborate lateral display, fanning his fins to expose the full extent of his iridescent patterning, then manoeuvres alongside her. There is no prolonged pair bond; males compete directly for access to females, and in groups with multiple males, dominant individuals spawn more often.

When a female is receptive, the pair move to the substrate surface and press together side by side. The male curves his body around the female — a brief embrace — and both fish plunge simultaneously into the soft mud or detritus, burying themselves up to several centimetres below the surface. Eggs are deposited and fertilised below the substrate surface in this diving act, which physically places the embryos in the anaerobic, desiccation-buffered zone of the pool bottom. A single dive typically deposits one to a handful of eggs; the pair emerge, rest briefly, and may repeat the sequence multiple times during a spawning session.

Sex ratio in captive groups is variable — Killi.co.uk reports both male-biased and female-biased clutches — which is consistent with the temperature-dependent sex-determination or developmental stochasticity documented in several Austrolebias species.

Breeding

The eggs of Matilebias affinis are drought-resistant, undergoing diapause — a period of arrested embryonic development that allows them to survive the complete evaporation of their home pool. As the pool dries over the Uruguayan summer, the eggs remain buried in the substrate, protected by their tough chorion and by the anaerobic chemistry of the mud. Hatching is triggered by re-wetting when seasonal rains return, which represents the completion of a full annual cycle.

In the aquarium hobby, the dry-storage protocol replicates this process: the spawning medium (typically peat moss or coconut coir) is removed from the tank after spawning, gently squeezed of excess water, sealed in a plastic bag, labelled with the date, and stored at room temperature away from direct light. Incubation at room temperature requires approximately 8–10 weeks according to Killi.co.uk hobbyist reports, though one keeper noted incubation extending to around 100 days, reflecting the natural variability linked to diapause depth. When the keeper judges that development is complete — usually by candling the medium to look for fully formed embryos with visible eyes — the peat is re-wetted with aged, slightly acidic water and fry appear within hours.

Fry are fully formed miniatures at hatching and take baby brine shrimp (BBS) as a first food from day one. Because the parent fish are short-lived annuals, growth is fast and fish can reach sexual maturity within a few months of hatching. In the aquarium

Matilebias affinis is kept by killiphiles interested in South American annual species and is available as captive-bred stock from hobbyist networks. The Durazno strain, sourced from the Uruguayan department of the same name, appears in European and South American killi club exchanges. Care is straightforward by annual killifish standards: a small species tank of 11–16 US gal is adequate for a pair or small group, with dark substrate (fine-grained sand over peat), dim lighting, and floating vegetation to diffuse light and reduce male-to-male aggression.

Water should be neutral to slightly soft and acidic — roughly matching the Uruguay basin pool conditions: temperature 64–73 °F (FishBase gives 64–75 °F as the natural range), pH near neutral, and moderate softness. The cool end of that range is appropriate for long-term maintenance; temperatures approaching 75 °F tend to shorten the already-brief adult lifespan. FishBase flags the species as difficult to maintain in an aquarium over extended periods — a reference to its inherently short natural lifespan rather than any particular sensitivity to water chemistry, though stable conditions and regular partial water changes are still important.

A dedicated peat or coir spawning tray placed on the tank bottom gives the fish a substrate for their diving spawning behaviour. Without a suitable medium, pairs will attempt to spawn in fine sand or even against the bare tank bottom with reduced egg survival. Pairs should generally be kept together for spawning sessions of several weeks, after which the medium is removed and processed through the dry-storage protocol. Adults typically live only a few months in captivity — their lifespan mirrors the length of their natural wet season — so maintaining fresh batches of eggs in storage is essential for keeping the line going.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Matilebias affinis as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion A2ce, published in 2009 with a 2007 assessment date. The basis for the listing is a projected population decline driven by habitat degradation across the species' range in the Uruguay River basin. The IUCN notes that the basin has lost approximately 92.4 per cent of its original forest cover, and the Pampean grasslands and gallery forests where the temporary pools that sustain this species form are under continuous pressure from agricultural conversion.

The primary threat is the expansion of rice cultivation and other irrigated agriculture, which drains and modifies the seasonal pool systems the species depends on. Water pollution from urban and industrial wastewater and agro-chemical run-off compounds the habitat problem. The IUCN also flags invasive species and collection for the international pet trade (the wild versus captive-bred sourcing of trade specimens was unclear at time of assessment) as additional stressors. Population trend is assessed as decreasing, and no specific conservation measures were in place at the time of assessment.

The species occupies an extent of occurrence of approximately 53,367 mi², but because it is tied to small, scattered, ephemeral pools that themselves depend on intact grassland catchment hydrology, the effective area of occupancy is far smaller and highly fragmented. Each pool subpopulation is isolated during the dry season and must successfully complete its annual cycle to persist. Agricultural intensification that converts, drains, or pollutes even a fraction of these pools removes entire isolated subpopulations. Captive-bred lines in the killifish hobby provide some insurance, but long-term survival of the species depends on the conservation of seasonal freshwater habitats across southern Brazil and Uruguay.
