Matilebias cyaneus is a small South American annual killifish native to the ephemeral pools and seasonal stream margins of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, where its entire existence — from hatching to spawning — must be completed before the summer drought reduces its habitat to bare mud. Described from Arroio Dom Marcos in the Pampas drainage, it belongs to a group of rivulid annuals whose drought-resistant eggs carry the next generation buried in the soil across months of complete desiccation, hatching only when seasonal rains return. The IUCN assessed it as Endangered in 2022, reflecting both its extremely restricted known range — just three confirmed collection localities — and the ongoing degradation of the temporary-pool grasslands of southern Brazil on which it depends.

Taxonomy & naming

Matilebias cyaneus was originally described by L. H. Amato in 1986 as Cynolebias cyaneus, from seasonal pools in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The authority is presented in parentheses because the species has since been moved from its original genus. The specific epithet cyaneus is Latin for 'dark blue' or 'cyan', a direct reference to the vivid metallic blue-green iridescence of males in breeding condition.

The species has undergone multiple generic reassignments that mirror the unsettled state of South American annual killifish taxonomy. Costa (1998) transferred it to the newly erected Austrolebias, a large genus accommodating most of the Pampas-region annuals. FishBase records Matilebias cyaneus as a synonym arising from the most recent revision: Alonso et al. (2023) split Austrolebias sensu lato into eleven genera, reassigning several species — including this one — to the resurrected genus Matilebias. The American Killifish Association lists the current valid name under that system as Matilebias cyaneus. Pending broader uptake of the 2023 revision in authoritative catalogs, Matilebias cyaneus (Amato, 1986) remains the name in widest circulation in the aquarium hobby and ichthyological literature. Workers should note both combinations when searching the literature.

The species belongs to the family Rivulidae (order Cyprinodontiformes) and is part of a species-rich radiation of Pampas annual killies adapted to the temporary pools of the Río de la Plata basin and its southern tributaries.

This fish was long listed as Austrolebias cyaneus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Matilebias, and the current combination Matilebias cyaneus is followed here.

Morphology

Matilebias cyaneus is a sexually dimorphic species typical of the annual Pampas killies: males are conspicuously coloured while females are cryptic. Males display a deep, laterally compressed body covered in small overlapping scales that reflect a metallic blue-green iridescence, often with darker barring or spotting depending on mood and breeding condition. The fins are rounded and relatively large, with the dorsal and anal fins positioned far back on the body — a characteristic posture of the genus. The caudal fin is rounded to slightly lyrate. The eponymous blue (cyaneus) colouration is most saturated in dominant males during courtship and spawning.

Females are substantially plainer: brownish-olive with dark mottling or indistinct barring that provides camouflage against the detritus-laden substrate of their ephemeral pool habitat. Their body depth is similar to males but the unpaired fins are shorter and without iridescence. This strong dichromatism — brilliant male against cryptic female — is universal in the Austrolebias group and reflects intense male–male competition and female mate choice in the brief breeding window the annual lifecycle allows.

Mature size is modest, as is typical of the genus: adult males of Austrolebias annuals generally reach 1.6–2.4 in total length, and females are slightly smaller. Voucher specimens of M. cyaneus lodged at UFRJ (accession UFRJ 6741, 7 specimens) were collected from Arroio Dom Marcos in Rio Grande do Sul, confirming the species' placement within the Pampas annual assemblage.

Habitat

Matilebias cyaneus inhabits temporary pools, flooded grassland depressions, and the seasonally inundated margins of small stream systems in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil. Voucher material places the type locality at Arroio Dom Marcos, a small drainage within the Pampas-Chaco ecoregion where gently rolling grasslands (the southern Brazilian Campos) are interrupted by shallow clay-bottomed depressions that fill with the winter rains and dry completely by summer.

Only three collection localities are currently known, indicating an extremely restricted range even by the standards of Brazilian Austrolebias, which tend to be microendemic. The pools themselves are shallow, heavily vegetated with aquatic macrophytes and terrestrial grasses, and accumulate a deep layer of organic detritus — the soft, waterlogged substrate into which spawning pairs dive to deposit eggs. Water chemistry in these pools is typically soft and moderately acidic: Austrolebias pool water commonly runs at 9–200 µS/cm conductivity, pH 5–7, and temperatures of 59–82 °F across the annual cycle, with the cool Pampas winters keeping breeding-season water well below the temperatures characteristic of tropical South American killies.

The surrounding matrix of native Campos grassland is critical to pool persistence. Intact grassland slows run-off and allows pools to hold water for the months needed to complete the annual cycle. Where native vegetation has been converted to soybean, rice paddies, or intensive pastured livestock, the hydrology of these pools shifts dramatically — they may fill too briefly, drain too fast, or accumulate agricultural run-off that alters chemistry and eliminates the insect prey base.

Feeding

Like all Austrolebias, M. cyaneus is a carnivore adapted to exploit the brief burst of invertebrate productivity that follows the re-filling of its ephemeral pool. Wild fish feed on aquatic insect larvae (principally chironomids and mosquito larvae), small crustaceans, zooplankton, and terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the pool surface. Feeding is opportunistic and voracious — the annual lifestyle demands rapid growth, fast maturation, and intensive energy acquisition before the pool dries. Studies on closely related Austrolebias species confirm that breeding pairs can produce over 20 eggs per female per week at peak reproductive output, a metabolic demand that requires continuous high-quality feeding.

In the aquarium, M. cyaneus accepts a range of live and frozen invertebrate foods readily. Mosquito larvae (black and white), Drosophila, white worms (enchytrae), grindal worms, Artemia nauplii and adults, and small aquatic crustaceans are all taken eagerly. Dry foods are generally refused or ignored — annual killifish from temporary pools have not evolved to recognise inert particles as food. A varied diet of live and frozen items is essential for conditioning breeding fish and for sustaining the energy levels that support egg production.

Mating

Courtship in Matilebias cyaneus follows the intense, rapid pattern typical of annual killies under time pressure. Males display prominently to females with flared fins, lateral presenting, and repeated approach-and-retreat sequences that show off the iridescent blue flanks. Competition between males is vigorous and can be injurious in confined spaces; in larger tanks or pools with multiple males, dominance hierarchies form and subordinate males suppress their colouration.

When a female signals receptivity — typically by approaching the substrate and adopting a horizontal presenting posture — the pair aligns side by side and the male curves his body around the female in a spawning embrace. Simultaneously, both fish drive head-first into the soft substrate — peat, mud, detritus, or coir in the aquarium — burying themselves partially or fully to deposit the fertilised eggs deep in the sediment layer where they will be protected from desiccation and predation. Multiple spawning bouts occur within a single session, the pair surfacing and repeating the dive over many minutes or hours. The speed and urgency of this mating behaviour reflects the constrained temporal window available to annual killifish: every individual alive during the dry season is already dead.

Breeding

Reproduction in Matilebias cyaneus is keyed entirely to the annual desiccation cycle of its temporary pool habitat. Eggs are laid in the substrate in diapause-ready form: a thick, resistant chorion protects the embryo through the dry season, during which the pool's surface water evaporates and the substrate cracks and dries, often reaching ambient air temperatures far above the thermal tolerance of any larval fish. The embryos pass weeks to months in arrested developmental states (diapause phases I, II, and III), resuming development only when conditions shift — the return of rainfall, re-wetting of the substrate, or a drop and then rise in oxygen levels — and hatching as the pool refills.

In the aquarium, this biology is maintained through the peat-spawning technique universal in the annual-killifish hobby: a layer of damp peat or coconut coir is provided on the tank floor as a spawning medium. After several weeks of spawning, the keeper siphons out or removes the peat, squeezes it lightly to reduce moisture, seals it in a bag or container, and stores it at room temperature for 8–16 weeks (the typical recommended diapause period for Pampas annuals, though exact timing varies by species and collection). Re-wetting the peat with aged water triggers hatching, often within hours. Newly hatched fry are large enough to take baby brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) immediately and grow rapidly — reaching sexual maturity in 6–10 weeks under good conditions, mirroring the compressed timeline of wild annual cycles.

Parental care is absent: adults continue to feed and will consume eggs and newly hatched fry if given the opportunity, so regular removal of the spawning medium is standard practice.

In the aquarium

Matilebias cyaneus is a specialist fish suited to killifish keepers with experience in annual species. A small species tank of 3–7 US gal is sufficient for a pair or small group (one male, two females), and a tight-fitting lid is essential — annual killies are active and can jump. The aquarium should be dimly lit and furnished with clumps of floating plants or surface cover to reduce stress and allow females to escape persistent male attention; bare or brightly lit tanks produce stressed, faded fish that breed poorly.

Water conditions should reflect the cool, soft, slightly acidic pools of the Pampas: temperature 64–75 °F (slightly cooler than most tropical tanks), pH 5.5–7.0, and very soft water (conductivity well under 200 µS/cm). A deep layer of peat or dark coir on the tank floor serves simultaneously as decor, comfort, and spawning medium — these fish will not breed without a suitable substrate to dive into. Regular partial water changes with soft, aged water maintain quality; powerful filtration is unnecessary in the small volumes appropriate for this species.

M. cyaneus is not a community fish: it is predatory toward anything small enough to consume, and other species add stress that reduces breeding output. It is best kept as a species tank in a dedicated killifish setup. In the annual-killifish hobby, the species is maintained by specialist clubs including the American Killifish Association (AKA), whose member exchanges are often the best source of ethically bred stock.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Matilebias cyaneus as Endangered (EN) in 2022. The listing reflects two compounding vulnerabilities: an extremely restricted range confined to southern Rio Grande do Sul, with only three confirmed collection localities known to science, and ongoing habitat loss driven by the conversion of native Campos grasslands to intensive agriculture across the Pampas region of Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina.

The temporary pools that annual killies depend on are not accorded formal protection in most of their range and are frequently regarded as agricultural waste ground — drained for crops, filled for pasture improvement, or modified by irrigation infrastructure. The conversion of native Campos to soybean monoculture, rice paddy, and improved pasture has accelerated markedly in Rio Grande do Sul since the 1990s, and the hydrology of surviving grassland-pool systems is further disrupted by surrounding agricultural run-off bearing pesticides, fertilisers, and silt. The introduction of mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.) into Brazilian wetlands for mosquito control represents an additional pressure, with these aggressive live-bearing predators capable of decimating killifish populations in the same temporary pools.

Because the entire species' genetic diversity is concentrated in a handful of known localities, any single drainage-and-fill event or drought extending beyond the eggs' diapause tolerance could extirpate a genetically distinct local population permanently. The aquarium hobby, through the AKA and associated European killifish clubs, maintains captive populations that serve as an insurance reserve against wild extirpation. Formalising the conservation status of the species' habitat pools under Brazilian wetland protection law, and extending survey effort to locate additional populations, are the priorities identified by regional researchers working on this and closely related threatened Austrolebias.
