Matilebias periodicus was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 1999. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid combination as Matilebias periodicus (Costa, 1999), originally placed within the genus Austrolebias — a large clade of South American annual killifishes in the family Rivulidae (order Cyprinodontiformes). The parenthetical authority reflects the subsequent nomenclatural history of the group; the generic assignment was revised in 2023 when Brejão (2024) erected the genus Matilebias to accommodate a subset of Austrolebias including this species, and FishBase now lists the fish under Matilebias periodicus. The American Killifish Association (AKA) likewise reflects this transfer and classifies the species in Class 3: South American Annuals.
The specific epithet periodicus is Latin for 'periodic' or 'recurring', an apt allusion to the cyclical annual life history that defines the species: born, bred, and dead within a single wet season, with the population's continuity entrusted to buried eggs that survive the dry interval and hatch to begin the cycle anew. The AKA documents five issues of the Journal of the American Killifish Association (JAKA) covering the species across the period 2001–2018, reflecting sustained hobbyist interest since its original description.

Morphology
Matilebias periodicus is a small fish; FishBase records a maximum size of 2 in total length, while the reference site It Rains Fishes (Frans Vermeulen) gives a more cautious 1.6 in standard length for males measured in the wild. It Rains Fishes documents detailed meristics: dorsal fin rays approximately 24, anal fin rays approximately 23, with the dorsal-fin origin slightly anterior to the anal-fin origin (D/A ratio 0.1); lateral-line scale count approximately 26.5; pre-dorsal length approximately 48.7% of standard length; maximum body depth approximately 35.8% of SL. The body is fully scaled including the anal and opercular regions — a diagnostic character shared with related species in the genus.
Males are the more conspicuous sex, typically displaying a steel-blue to blue-green iridescent ground colour overlaid with 7–12 dark vertical bars or chevrons on the flanks. It Rains Fishes notes a straight dorsal profile and the black vertical bars as key identification features. Females are cryptically coloured — brownish or olive-tan with irregular mottling — a camouflage adaptation suited to the dense aquatic vegetation and leaf litter of their temporary pool habitat. Sexual dichromatism in Austrolebias species is extreme relative to most freshwater families, and periodicus follows the general pattern closely.
Habitat
This species is restricted to the Ibicuí and Quaraí (Cuareim) river drainages within the larger río Uruguay basin, occurring in southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul; the AKA records Santana do Livramento and Lajeadinho as documented collection localities) and northwestern Uruguay. The type locality is described broadly as the río Uruguay drainage spanning these two countries.
Like all South American annual killifishes, Matilebias periodicus inhabits temporary pools — shallow, seasonally inundated depressions in open Pampas grassland and riparian flats that fill during the austral spring and summer rains and dry out completely during the dry winter season. These pools are typically turbid, rich in organic matter and detritus, with soft mud or peat substrates in which the fish spawn. Water temperatures follow a continental seasonal regime: It Rains Fishes records a captive temperature optimum of 64–75 °F, with the wild pools reaching cooler conditions during the Uruguayan and southern Brazilian winter, sometimes dipping below 59 °F before drying entirely. pH and hardness data specific to this species are not well documented in available sources; the Pampas pools of the río Uruguay drainage are generally soft to moderately hard and circumneutral to slightly acidic.
Feeding
FishBase characterises Matilebias periodicus as feeding on insects and other invertebrates — a diet typical of Austrolebias species, which are active visual predators in the water column of their temporary pools. Wild fish take small aquatic and terrestrial insects, aquatic crustaceans, worms, and whatever invertebrate prey enters or falls into the pool during the brief wet season. The short growing season means adults must feed heavily and grow quickly to reach reproductive maturity before the pool dries.
In captivity, the species accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods readily: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), Tubifex, and small crickets or fruit flies (Drosophila) for the surface-aware individuals. Dry or prepared foods are taken by some individuals but are not the preferred option; a diet centred on live and frozen invertebrates maintains the best colour and breeding condition. Because of the species' small maximum size, prey items must be appropriately scaled — oversized frozen bloodworm rings, for example, should be broken apart.
Mating
Matilebias periodicus follows the classic annual-killi mating system: a male courts a female with lateral displays that showcase the vertical-bar patterning to full effect, extending his fins and presenting his flank broadside. Rival males are confronted with similar displays and, if neither retreats, with brief nipping or tail-beating. The stronger male herds the female toward the substrate for spawning.
Courtship in Austrolebias species documented by researchers (including the genus-level work published on ResearchGate covering Austrolebias nigripinnis) shows males investing substantially in visual advertisement, with the iridescent flank barring functioning as both a species-recognition signal and an indicator of male quality. Females exercise mate choice, and a well-maintained male in peak colour will typically spawn more successfully than a dull or stressed individual. Multiple males may attempt to court a single female in a densely stocked aquarium, which can stress females; providing visual breaks and maintaining a low male-to-female ratio reduces conflict.
Breeding
Spawning is a diving act: the paired male and female push down together into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus — and the female deposits eggs in the sediment while the male simultaneously releases sperm. Each dive yields one or a few eggs, and the pair may repeat the sequence many times in a session. The eggs, once buried, are left entirely without parental care. Annual killifish eggs are desiccation-resistant structures capable of surviving months of dryness through developmental diapause — a state of arrested development in which embryonic metabolism is suppressed until environmental cues (re-wetting, often combined with temperature change) trigger hatching.
It Rains Fishes documents an incubation period of approximately six weeks at 77 °F under moist storage, though the timing is flexible: eggs stored cooler develop more slowly and can be held for extended periods. A notable feature of Austrolebias eggs is polyembryony or staggered-hatch behaviour — not all eggs in a clutch hatch simultaneously even under identical conditions; some hatch days, weeks, or months later than the main cohort. This temporal spreading of hatching is an evolutionary hedge against false starts: if the first rains are too brief and the pool dries again, a second cohort from the same clutch survives to hatch at the next inundation. Aquarists exploit this by storing peat containing eggs, then re-wetting and re-drying multiple times to hatch successive waves. Wild adults rarely live longer than 8–11 months; spawning begins as early as 5–6 weeks of age.
In the aquarium
Matilebias periodicus is maintained by dedicated annual-killi hobbyists and is catalogued by the AKA as a Class 3 South American Annual. It is not a beginner fish — the annual life-cycle management, the peat-substrate spawning system, and the egg storage and hatching protocol require knowledge specific to the annual-killi hobby — but for keepers familiar with the group it is a straightforward and rewarding species.
A species tank or a tank shared with one or two similarly sized, non-aggressive companions suits the fish best. A 11–16 US gal aquarium is adequate for a pair or trio. The substrate should include a layer of soft peat or coconut-coir spawning medium several centimetres deep to allow natural diving spawning behaviour; alternatively, a separate spawning container of peat can be placed in the tank and removed periodically. It Rains Fishes recommends keeping water temperatures in the 64–75 °F range; temperatures above 79 °F shorten lifespan and reduce egg quality. The water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral, with good surface movement for oxygenation but without heavy turbulence. Dense planting with fine-leaved species (Ceratophyllum, Riccia, or Java moss) provides cover and reduces male-on-female aggression.
Eggs collected in peat are pressed lightly to remove excess moisture, then stored in a sealed bag or container at room temperature (64–72 °F) for six to ten weeks before re-wetting. Hatching is induced by flooding the peat with soft, slightly acidic water. Fry are large enough at hatching to take freshly hatched Artemia nauplii immediately; growth is rapid and the fish can be sexed within four to six weeks.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Matilebias periodicus as Vulnerable (VU) in 2020, with the assessment authored by Gabriel Brejão and revised in 2024 (published 2020-12-11, updated 2025-02). The Vulnerable listing reflects a restricted range confined to the Ibicuí and Quaraí river drainages of the río Uruguay basin — a narrow endemic footprint — combined with ongoing and projected habitat loss.
The seasonal floodplain pools of the Pampas are among South America's most threatened freshwater microhabitats. Agricultural intensification across the grasslands of Rio Grande do Sul and northwestern Uruguay has resulted in large-scale drainage of temporary wetlands for soybean cultivation, cattle grazing infrastructure, and irrigation works. The loss of even a fraction of the available pool habitat translates directly into population decline for a species with no capacity to disperse between catchments and no adult stage capable of surviving the dry season. Introduced mosquitofish (Gambusia species), widely released across South America as biocontrol agents, represent an additional pressure, as they prey on eggs and small fry in the ephemeral pools they colonise. Given the species' dependence on an increasingly fragmented and threatened wetland type, and the ongoing conversion of Pampas grassland to row-crop agriculture, the Vulnerable assessment reflects a genuine and ongoing trajectory of decline.
