Apteronotus hasemani is the sole member of its genus, a deep-channel ghost knifefish of the Amazon basin built on the same plan as its better-known relative the black ghost: no dorsal fin, no proper tail, a long ribbon-like anal fin for propulsion, and a weak electric field generated around the body that stands in for the eyesight it barely needs. Like every member of the family Apteronotidae, it produces a fast, quasi-sinusoidal wave-type electric organ discharge — a signal used both to electrolocate prey and obstacles in dark water and to communicate identity and status to other knifefish. It reaches a respectable 38 cm in total length, but it is rarely if ever seen in the aquarium trade, known mostly from museum and survey specimens rather than home tanks.

Taxonomy & naming

Apteronotus hasemani was described by M. M. Ellis in 1913 and today stands as the only species in its genus, Parapteronotus, within the family Apteronotidae — the ghost knifefishes — in the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish, but unusual ones: nearly every species in the order generates a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) around its body, used both for electrolocation — sensing prey, obstacles and other fish in dark or turbid water where eyesight is of limited use — and for communication, since each species and sex carries a recognisable discharge signature. Apteronotidae are distinguished within the order by an electric organ built from modified nerve tissue rather than muscle, which lets them produce a fast, continuous wave-type discharge rather than the pulsed signal of most other gymnotiform families.

The species epithet honours John Diederich Haseman, the American zoologist and ichthyologist whose early-twentieth-century South American expeditions collected many of the specimens on which Ellis based his descriptions of Amazonian fishes. As with all Gymnotiformes, Apteronotus hasemani should not be confused with the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus) — those are bonytongues from an unrelated order, and the shared common name "knifefish" reflects convergent body shape, not kinship. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name.

Morphology

Apteronotus hasemani follows the classic ghost-knifefish body plan: laterally compressed, blade-like, tapering smoothly from a moderately deep body toward a fine, whip-like tail, with no dorsal fin and no functional caudal fin. Locomotion comes almost entirely from a long anal fin running along most of the underside, thrown into travelling waves that let the fish move forward or backward with equal control — a hallmark of the family. It reaches a maximum total length of about 15 in, a solidly mid-sized member of the ghost knifefishes, larger than most Apteronotus species but well short of the biggest gymnotiforms.

As in all Apteronotidae, an electric organ runs the length of the body, paired with electroreceptor pores scattered over the skin that read the field it produces. The species is scaleless, like every other member of the order, which leaves the skin without the protective covering most bony fish rely on. Detailed data on external sexual differences are not available in the sources consulted here; as in related ghost knifefishes, the sexes are not easily told apart by eye.

Habitat

Apteronotus hasemani is a benthopelagic fish of the Amazon basin, recorded from Brazil and Peru. Ghost knifefishes as a family favour the deeper channels of tropical rivers and the sandy-bottomed margins among submerged roots and leaf litter, rather than still backwaters — flowing, warm, and often turbid or tannin-stained water where an electric sense outperforms vision.

Detailed site-specific habitat data for this species is sparse relative to well-studied relatives such as the black ghost, but its family placement and Amazonian range point to the same general picture: warm, soft to moderately mineralised, near-neutral water, dimly lit by day and NOT with any hint of marine salt. Family-wide, ghost knifefishes are nocturnal, sheltering by day and becoming active after dark, when their electrolocation abilities give them their real advantage over sight-hunting fish.

Feeding

As a member of Apteronotidae, Apteronotus hasemani is presumed to be a nocturnal carnivore in the manner of its relatives, hunting small benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — largely by electrolocation rather than sight, probing sediment and cover after dark. Species-specific diet data for A. hasemani is not documented in the sources available here; this account follows the well-established feeding pattern of the ghost knifefishes as a group.

Given how rarely the species is encountered outside scientific survey collections, there is essentially no aquarium feeding record to draw on. Prospective keepers should assume it needs the same meaty, live or frozen foods — bloodworm, blackworm, small crustaceans — offered in the evening that other Apteronotidae require, rather than flake or dry food.

Mating

Courtship in the ghost knifefishes is understood largely through the electric sense rather than through direct observation of spawning. The wave-type EOD that Apteronotidae use to navigate also carries information about a fish's identity, sex and readiness to breed; in the best-studied relative, the brown ghost (Apteronotus leptorhynchus), males and females shift their discharge frequency during courtship in an electrical exchange, and rivals produce distinctive interruptions on encounter. There is no specific behavioural study of Apteronotus hasemani's courtship in the sources consulted, so this account extends the family pattern rather than reporting observations unique to the species.

What can be said with confidence is the general shape: courtship in this family plays out partly as an exchange of electric signals in the dark, alongside physical approach, well before any physical spawning act is observed.

Breeding

Data on the reproductive biology of Apteronotus hasemani specifically is sparse to the point of being effectively undocumented in available sources. Spawning in the family, where observed, involves eggs scattered among roots, plants or other cover, with no substantial parental care afterward.

Given that A. hasemani is essentially absent from the aquarium trade, there is no reported breeding history for it in captivity at all. The honest statement here is that its breeding biology is poorly documented and likely to remain so barring dedicated field study.

Apteronotus hasemani is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it does not appear in the ornamental trade, and the species is known almost entirely from museum and survey material rather than living collections. Anyone encountering the name is far more likely to be reading a taxonomic or ichthyological reference than shopping for a fish.

Were it ever to appear in captivity, the general rules for ghost knifefishes would apply: because it is scaleless, it would need great care with medications (no copper-based treatments, and reduced doses of anything else) and would be sensitive to ammonia and nitrate; as a presumed nocturnal predator hunting by electrolocation, it would need a dim, well-covered tank and would not be safe with bite-sized tankmates after dark. At a maximum length of roughly 15 in it would also need considerably more swimming space than the small tanks sometimes used for its smaller relatives.

Conservation

Apteronotus hasemani is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, last evaluated in 2020. No specific threats are flagged in the assessment record available here, consistent with a species that is not targeted by the aquarium trade and appears to have a viable range within the Amazon basin across Brazil and Peru.

As with many Amazonian gymnotiforms that are Data Deficient or Least Concern on paper, the caveat is that formal assessments for such species often rest on limited survey coverage rather than dense population data. The broader pressures facing Amazon basin fishes generally — deforestation, damming, and pollution including mercury from mining — are relevant context for the region even where they are not documented as specific threats to this species.
