Porotergus bonapartii is an Amazonian ghost knifefish, a close relative of the popular black ghost that is far less often seen in the hobby but shares the same defining trick: it swims by rippling one long fin beneath a scaleless, blade-shaped body, and it reads the dark water around it not with its eyes but with a weak electric field. That field is a fast, steady wave-type discharge, generated by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells, and it lets the fish sense prey, obstacles and other knifefish in the murky channels and macrophyte banks of the Amazon basin where it lives. Males and females carry the signal differently — chirping more or less often as they meet — which makes this species one of the better-studied examples of electric communication in the group, even though its aquarium biology remains largely undocumented.

Taxonomy & naming

Porotergus bonapartii was described by Francis de Laporte de Castelnau in 1855 and belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like its relatives it is a bony fish but an unusual one: the Gymnotiformes are set apart by an electric organ and a single long anal fin that does almost all the swimming, and the Apteronotidae in particular generate their discharge from modified nerve cells rather than muscle, giving them the fastest, highest-frequency signals of any knifefish family.

The species has had a tangled taxonomic history, having at times been confused with the similar A. apurensis; a cranial-osteology study (BioOne, Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia) confirmed its identity and sexually dimorphic status as a valid, distinct South American species. As with all New-World knifefishes, it is unrelated to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order — the resemblance is convergent, not a sign of kinship. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.

This fish was long listed as Apteronotus bonapartii; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Porotergus, and the current combination Porotergus bonapartii is followed here.

Morphology

Porotergus bonapartii has the classic ghost-knifefish build: a laterally compressed, blade-like body tapering to a slender tail, with no dorsal fin and no distinct tail fin. Propulsion comes from a long anal fin running along most of the underside, undulating in travelling waves that move the fish forwards or backwards with equal ease. FishBase records a maximum standard length of about 15 in, with adults reaching a recorded maximum weight of around 138 g.

The species is sexually dimorphic — unusually clearly so for a ghost knifefish — with documented differences in lower-jaw structure between males and females, a feature used to help distinguish it from the closely related A. apurensis. Like all Apteronotidae it is scaleless, its skin carrying the sensory pores that read the electric field produced by the organ running down the body. The wave-type electric organ discharge itself is close to monomorphic between the sexes in frequency, sitting in the roughly 973–1673 Hz range reported for this species (with the wider genus spanning about 800–2300 Hz).

Habitat

This species is found in the Amazon River basin, with a type locality in a lake draining into the Río Ucayali in Peru, and records from several South American rivers across the basin. As with other Apteronotidae, juveniles tend to occupy macrophyte banks — the vegetated margins of slow water — while mature adults move into the open river channels, a habitat shift documented across the family.

These are warm, lowland Amazonian waters, often turbid or tannin-stained, where vision counts for little after dark and an electric sense becomes the primary way to navigate and find food. The species is benthopelagic, occupying the water column near the bottom rather than sitting flat on the substrate. Deforestation across the Amazon and Orinoco basins is reducing the diversity of streams and riparian zones that fish like this depend on, though the species itself remains widespread within its range.

Feeding

Porotergus bonapartii sits at a trophic level of around 3.4, consistent with a carnivorous diet of small invertebrates rather than a fish-eating predator. Like other ghost knifefishes it is presumed to hunt mainly after dark, using its electric sense to locate prey — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — hidden in sediment or among roots and vegetation, in the same way documented for its better-studied relatives.

Detailed feeding data specific to this species is sparse in the available sources; nocturnal, electroreceptive foraging on benthic invertebrates is the best-supported picture, extrapolated from its family-wide biology and its ecological role as recorded on FishBase. In an aquarium setting, meaty frozen and live foods offered after dark would be expected to suit it, following the pattern of other Apteronotus species, though this is not separately documented for P. bonapartii.

Mating

The electric organ discharge in this species is not just a sensing tool but a documented social signal. Research on sex differences in electrocommunication (PMC) found that while the discharge frequency itself is essentially the same between males and females, the two sexes differ clearly in how they use chirps — brief modulations of the discharge produced during social encounters. Males produce chirps with significantly more frequency peaks (averaging around 2.2) than females (around 1.2), and chirp rate rises when a social stimulus — another fish — is presented, with each chirp lasting roughly 25–30 milliseconds.

Males in this species also carry substantially higher levels of the androgen 11-ketotestosterone than females, though the same study found no direct correlation between androgen levels and chirping behaviour, suggesting the electric signalling and the hormonal difference are not simply linked. This makes P. bonapartii one of the more thoroughly studied species for electric courtship signalling in the family, even though what happens at the point of spawning itself is not documented in the available sources.

Breeding

No spawning account for Porotergus bonapartii appears in the available sources. As with most Apteronotidae, it is presumed to be an egg-layer, and the electric chirping behaviour documented in this species during social encounters is very likely part of courtship and mate assessment, paralleling the electric 'duets' described in other ghost knifefish. Breeding in the family is rarely achieved in home aquaria — most Apteronotus in the trade are wild-caught or farm-produced under hormone induction — and there is no evidence of substantial parental care in any studied species.

Data on captive spawning, egg placement or fry-rearing specific to this species is sparse; rather than infer a breeding protocol, the honest position is that P. bonapartii is essentially unbred and poorly documented in captivity, and its reproduction is understood almost entirely through the lens of electric signalling research rather than aquarium observation.

In the aquarium

Porotergus bonapartii is not an established aquarium fish and specific husbandry data is sparse; it should be approached with the same precautions as its better-known relative, the black ghost knifefish. It is scaleless, which makes it sensitive to ammonia and nitrate and to copper-based or otherwise harsh medications — doses typically need to be reduced for any Apteronotus. As a nocturnal, electroreceptive predator that reaches around 15 in, it needs generous swimming space, dim lighting, and secure cover such as pipes, caves or root tangles to retreat into by day.

Given its size and predatory habits it should not be trusted with small fish or shrimp, which it would be expected to hunt after dark by electrolocation, in keeping with the rest of the genus. Because so little is published specifically on this species in captivity, anyone keeping it should treat published Apteronotus care guidelines as a starting point rather than a confirmed match, and favour any available captive-bred stock over wild-caught individuals.

Conservation

Porotergus bonapartii was assessed by the IUCN in 2020 and is listed as Least Concern, reflecting its documented distribution across the Amazon River basin and records from multiple South American rivers within that range. It is not currently considered a species of conservation concern.

The broader pressure on its habitat is real, however: deforestation across the Amazon and Orinoco basins is reducing stream diversity and degrading riparian zones, the kind of change that erodes habitat quality for benthopelagic river fish over time even where a species' overall range remains wide. As with other wide-ranging Amazonian gymnotiforms, a stable regional assessment today is not a guarantee against the slower attrition of habitat quality across the basin.
