Porotergus ellisi is a southern ghost knifefish of the Paraná–Paraguay–Uruguay river system, a scaleless, blade-bodied fish that — like the rest of its family — has almost no use for eyes and instead reads the world through a weak electric field generated around its own body. A continuous, high-frequency wave-type discharge from an electric organ of modified nerve cells lets it electrolocate prey and obstacles in dark or turbid water and lets it and its neighbours signal identity, sex and mood to one another, all while it sculls forward and backward on the ripple of a single long anal fin. It reaches a modest size for the genus, well under the black ghost's half-metre, and is far less often seen in the aquarium trade, with much less published about its husbandry or breeding than its famous cousin.

Taxonomy & naming

Porotergus ellisi was described by Alonso de Arámburu in 1957 and belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like all Gymnotiformes it is a bony fish but an unusual one, defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin rather than by conventional swimming fins. Within the order, the Apteronotidae are distinguished by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells instead of muscle, which produces the fastest and steadiest discharges of any knifefish family — a continuous wave-type signal rather than the pulses of groups like Gymnotus.

The common name "knifefish" is shared with the unrelated Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), bonytongues from a completely different order; the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship. The genus Apteronotus holds the black ghost (A. albifrons) and brown ghost (A. leptorhynchus) familiar to aquarists, alongside a larger number of less-documented species, of which P. ellisi is one. The species is named for the American zoologist Max Mapes Ellis (1887–1953). The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.

Morphology

Porotergus ellisi shares the family's diagnostic ghost-knifefish build: a laterally compressed, blade-like body tapering to a thin tail, no dorsal fin, and no distinct caudal fin as such — locomotion instead comes from a very long anal fin run as a travelling wave along the underside of the body, which lets the fish move forward or backward with equal ease. As in its relatives, a thin sensory filament sits along the back. The species reaches a reported maximum of around 12.9 in total length, notably smaller than the black ghost's near-19.7 in ceiling, though still a substantial fish for a home aquarium.

The skin is scaleless and carries the sensory pores that read the fish's own electric field, a feature shared across the family and one with real husbandry consequences. Detailed published description of P. ellisi's coloration and any external sexual differences is sparse; as in other Apteronotus, the sexes are not reliably told apart by eye, and dimorphism is best known through electric organ discharge frequency rather than appearance.

Habitat

Porotergus ellisi is known from the southern reaches of the Paraná–Paraguay river system, with records from the Paraná River basin and Paraguay River basin in Argentina and the Uruguay River in Brazil — placing it at the cooler, more subtropical southern edge of the ghost knifefishes' Neotropical range, rather than the equatorial Amazon and Orinoco basins that dominate for the black ghost. FishBase describes it as a freshwater benthopelagic species of subtropical waters.

As with other Apteronotidae, the species is presumed to favour flowing river channels over still water, and to be most active after dark, when its electric sense comes into its own in water where vision offers little advantage. Specific habitat detail — substrate preference, depth, association with cover — is not well documented for this species in the available literature; data sparse beyond the basin-level distribution.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies specific to Porotergus ellisi are not available in the sources consulted; data sparse. By family pattern, ghost knifefishes are nocturnal carnivores that hunt small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — locating them in the dark largely through electrolocation, sensing the way prey distorts the fish's own electric field rather than relying on sight.

In the aquarium, Apteronotus species of this size are generally offered meaty foods such as bloodworm, chopped earthworm and frozen crustacean-based diets, fed after dark when the fish are active; no species-specific feeding regime for P. ellisi has been published, so this should be treated as an extrapolation from the genus rather than a confirmed protocol for this species.

Mating

As in other Apteronotidae, courtship in Porotergus ellisi is likely bound up with its electric organ discharge: the continuous wave-type signal encodes information about identity, sex and readiness to spawn, and in the best-studied relative, the brown ghost (A. leptorhynchus), males and females shift their discharge frequencies toward one another during courtship in what researchers describe as an electric duet, while rivals produce distinctive frequency interruptions on encounter. Whether P. ellisi performs an equivalent electric courtship has not been specifically documented, but it is consistent with what is known of the family's electrocommunication.

Breeding

Breeding of Porotergus ellisi in the aquarium is essentially undocumented in the available literature. Ghost knifefishes as a group are egg-layers that, where breeding has been recorded at all, scatter eggs among roots, plants or other cover with no meaningful parental care afterward — but for most Apteronotus species, including this one, captive breeding is rare or unreported, and fish reaching the trade are typically wild-caught.

Given the absence of species-specific breeding records, the honest position is that P. ellisi should be considered essentially unbred in captivity, with reproduction understood only by extension from better-studied relatives; this is not a species to plan around producing offspring from.

In the aquarium

Porotergus ellisi is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade compared with the black ghost, and specific husbandry guidance for the species is limited. What can be said with confidence follows from its family and its being scaleless: it will need great care with medications, since scaleless fish are unusually sensitive to copper-based treatments and often require reduced dosing, and it will need stable, low-ammonia, low-nitrate water maintained through mature filtration and regular water changes.

As a nocturnal electroreceptive predator, it should be given a dimly lit tank with secure daytime hides — pipes, caves or root tangles — and should not be trusted with bite-sized fish or shrimp, which it is likely to hunt after dark in the manner typical of its genus. At a reported maximum around 12.9 in it needs less swimming space than the black ghost but still warrants a decently sized, long aquarium with warm, soft, gently moving water. Given how little is published on this species specifically, prospective keepers should treat black-ghost husbandry as a starting template rather than a confirmed match, and favour any available captive-bred stock.

Conservation

Porotergus ellisi is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It occupies the Paraná, Paraguay and Uruguay river systems across parts of Argentina and Brazil, a substantial subtropical river network, and there is no indication in the sources consulted of significant population decline or an imminent threat at the species level.

As with other freshwater fishes of these river systems, longer-term pressures such as damming, water-quality changes and habitat modification are relevant to the basin generally, but no species-specific conservation concern or targeted study of P. ellisi's population trend was found. The Least Concern listing should be read as a reflection of a wide basin-level range rather than evidence of detailed monitoring of the species itself.
