Poecilia minima is one of the smallest livebearers in the world — a narrowly endemic toothcarp known only from the Guamá River basin of eastern Amazonia, in the Brazilian state of Pará. Described in 1997 and so diminutive that adult males barely exceed a centimetre and a half, it belongs to the small-bodied genus Micropoecilia, the dwarf relatives of the guppies. Almost nothing has been published about its life in the field, and it has next to no presence in the aquarium hobby; what little is recorded points to a tiny, range-restricted fish whose biology must largely be inferred from its close relatives among the New World livebearers.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia minima was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa and A. C. Sarraf in 1997, originally as Poecilia minima, from material collected in the Guamá River basin of Pará, Brazil. It was subsequently transferred to the genus Micropoecilia, the combination treated as valid today (Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name). The basionym Poecilia minima Costa & Sarraf, 1997 reflects the species' first placement among the broader Poecilia assemblage before the small-bodied Micropoecilia lineage was recognised as distinct for it.

Micropoecilia is a genus of dwarf livebearers within the subfamily Poeciliinae of the family Poeciliidae — the New World toothcarps that also contain the guppies, mollies and platies. The genus has at times been treated as a subgenus of Poecilia, and its boundaries have shifted with successive revisions of the poeciliid livebearers; the species included here are united by their very small size and their distribution across the coastal and Amazonian drainages of north-eastern South America. The specific epithet minima — Latin for "smallest" — was chosen for exactly the reason it sounds: this is among the tiniest members of an already small-bodied group.

The most authoritative modern treatment of the species' placement is the Poeciliidae chapter by P. H. F. Lucinda in the Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (Reis, Kullander & Ferraris, 2003), which catalogues the valid livebearers of the region and is the standard reference for the genus. GBIF's taxonomic backbone likewise lists Poecilia minima as the accepted name with Poecilia minima as its basionym, confirming the generic reassignment.

This fish was long listed as Micropoecilia minima; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Poecilia, and the current combination Poecilia minima is followed here.

Morphology

Poecilia minima is a true dwarf among livebearers. Published measurements give a maximum of about 0.6 in standard length for males and roughly 0.9 in standard length for females, making it one of the smallest poeciliids known and one of the smallest fishes in its family overall. As in most livebearers the female is the larger and bulkier sex, while the male is markedly smaller and more slender.

Detailed colour and meristic descriptions for this species are sparse in the accessible literature, and beyond the original description little has been published on its appearance. Like its congeners in Micropoecilia, it can be expected to show the modest, finely marked patterning typical of the dwarf livebearers rather than the bold spotting of a domestic guppy, with any brighter pigment concentrated in the male. Given the gap in published detail, the safest statement is that fine morphological data for P. minima are data-sparse and rest chiefly on the type series.

The one structure that can be asserted with confidence is the male gonopodium — the rod-like intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays that defines the male poeciliid livebearer. Its presence in the male, together with the larger, deeper-bodied female, gives the species the standard sexual dimorphism of the family even where finer pattern details remain undocumented.

Habitat

Poecilia minima is a narrow endemic of the Guamá (Guama) River basin in eastern Amazonia, in the Brazilian state of Pará. FishBase records it from this single drainage, and GBIF's small set of occurrence records is consistent with a tightly restricted range; it is not known from anywhere outside this north-eastern corner of the Amazon system. It is classed as a freshwater, benthopelagic species of tropical lowland waters.

Few specifics of its preferred microhabitat have been published, but the small-bodied Micropoecilia livebearers of this region are generally fishes of warm, shallow, sluggish or standing waters — the margins of streams, pools, ditches and coastal lowland habitats — where small surface-and-midwater livebearers can shelter among vegetation. A fish of this size is necessarily tied to quiet, shallow water with cover rather than open current.

Because the species occupies a single river basin, its habitat picture is essentially that of the lower Guamá drainage: a tropical, warm-water Amazonian system. No published temperature or chemistry profile specific to P. minima is available, so any aquarium targets are extrapolated from the broadly warm, soft-to-neutral lowland waters typical of the region and its relatives rather than measured for this species.

Feeding

No diet study specific to Poecilia minima has been published, and FishBase carries no populated food or trophic-ecology record beyond an estimated trophic level near 3.0 — a value consistent with a small omnivore that takes a mixture of plant and animal matter rather than a strict predator or strict grazer.

By analogy with other small livebearers of the genus and family, P. minima can be expected to feed as an opportunistic micro-omnivore: grazing on algae, biofilm and detritus and picking small aquatic invertebrates, micro-crustaceans and insect larvae from among vegetation and from the water column. A fish of barely a centimetre and a half is restricted to very small food items taken more or less continuously through the day.

In the unlikely event the species is kept in captivity, the husbandry that suits dwarf livebearers would apply: finely powdered or crushed foods, microworm, newly hatched brine shrimp and other tiny live or frozen items, offered in small amounts several times a day. These feeding inferences are drawn from close relatives; the species' own wild diet remains undocumented.

Mating

Like all poeciliid livebearers, Poecilia minima reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin; there is no external spawning of eggs. This mode of reproduction is the defining reproductive feature of the family and can be asserted for P. minima on the strength of its membership in Micropoecilia even though its courtship has not been described in detail.

In the dwarf livebearers generally, males do not hold territories or build nests; instead they court and pursue females actively, and as in guppies and their relatives females are typically able to store viable sperm internally and produce successive broods from a single insemination. The smaller, more slender male and the larger female, together with the male's gonopodium, give the species the standard livebearer mating system inferred from its close kin.

No studies of mate choice, courtship display or sperm competition exist for P. minima specifically. Whether it shows the elaborate female preference and sneak-mating tactics documented in the well-studied guppy is unknown; the prudent position is that the broad mechanism — internal fertilisation via the gonopodium, with likely sperm storage — is secure, while the behavioural fine detail is data-sparse.

Breeding

Poecilia minima is a viviparous livebearer: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. This follows from its placement among the Poeciliinae, the live-bearing toothcarps, and is the reproductive mode that can be stated with confidence for the species.

Quantitative breeding data — gestation length, brood size, fry size at birth — have not been published for P. minima, and FishBase carries no reproduction record for it. Given the extreme small size of the female (around 0.9 in standard length), broods are necessarily small; tiny livebearers of this kind produce only a few young per brood rather than the dozens a large guppy can carry. Whether the species shows superfetation — the ability, present in some poeciliids, to carry overlapping broods at different developmental stages simultaneously — is not documented, and should not be assumed; it is reported in some relatives but has not been demonstrated for this species.

FishBase notes a high resilience for the species, with an estimated population doubling time of under 15 months, which is consistent with the rapid maturation and continuous reproduction typical of small livebearers. As with most of the family, any newborn young would be fully formed miniature fish able to swim and feed at once and would require dense cover to escape predation, including by adults. These expectations are extrapolated from the family; the species' own breeding parameters remain unstudied.

In the aquarium

Poecilia minima has essentially no presence in the aquarium hobby. FishBase records no aquarium or trade data for the species, it is a single-basin Brazilian endemic, and its extreme small size and obscurity mean it is effectively never offered or kept. Anyone encountering it would almost certainly be a specialist working with wild-collected material rather than a general aquarist.

No husbandry has been documented specifically for this fish, so any care notes are extrapolated from dwarf livebearers of the region rather than tested for P. minima. A species this tiny would need a small, mature, densely planted aquarium with gentle filtration and warm tropical water, kept with only the smallest and most peaceful tankmates — or, more sensibly for a dwarf endemic, as a single-species group. Very fine, frequent feedings and stable, clean water would matter more than precise chemistry targets.

The honest summary is that this is not a hobby fish in any practical sense: there is no established care regime, no strain history, and no body of keeper experience to draw on. It is included here as a documented member of the livebearer fauna rather than as an aquarium subject, and its care rating reflects how poorly known it is rather than any demonstrated difficulty.

Conservation

Poecilia minima has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; no dedicated assessment could be located, and FishBase (v2025-2) records its status as Not Evaluated. CITES and CMS likewise list it as not evaluated. Its conservation status is therefore formally unknown.

What can be said is that the species is a narrow endemic, confined as far as is known to the single Guamá River basin in Pará, eastern Amazonia. A range that small is intrinsically vulnerable: a species restricted to one drainage has little buffer against habitat alteration, pollution or land-use change in that catchment, and the lower Guamá lies in a populated and developing part of north-eastern Pará. The absence of a Red List assessment reflects a lack of study, not a judgement that the species is secure.

The responsible reading is precautionary. Until the species is formally evaluated and its population and range better documented, P. minima should be treated as a range-restricted, data-deficient endemic whose conservation needs are unknown rather than as a species of no concern. Better field survey of the Guamá basin would be the necessary first step toward any real assessment.
