Poecilia bifurca is one of the small, jewel-like swamp guppies of north-eastern South America — a livebearer of the same lineage that gave the hobby the common guppy, but a fraction of its fame. A tiny, slender toothcarp of soft, slightly acidic coastal and Amazonian waters, it has long sat awkwardly between the genera Poecilia and Micropoecilia, and only recently has it drawn fresh attention as a model for the evolution of sex chromosomes. For the aquarist it is a rarely seen specialist; for the biologist it is a window onto how live-bearing fishes diversified across the Guiana Shield and the Amazon.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia bifurca was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909, from South American material. The species belongs to the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers — within the subfamily Poeciliinae, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records it under the authority (Eigenmann, 1909), the parentheses signalling that the species has at some point been moved out of the genus in which it was originally placed. It carries the common name "Amazon guppy," a nod to its core distribution in the Amazon River basin.

The generic placement of bifurca is genuinely unsettled, and the literature reflects this. FishBase and much of the taxonomic tradition list the species in Micropoecilia, a genus of small "swamp guppies" historically split from Poecilia to hold a cluster of diminutive coastal and Amazonian livebearers. Recent genomic work, however — including a 2025 chromosome-level genome study — treats the fish as Poecilia bifurca and recovers it in a well-supported clade alongside Poecilia picta and Poecilia parae, two other small Guiana-Shield livebearers. Whether Micropoecilia is upheld as a distinct genus or sunk into Poecilia, the species itself is a stable, recognisable biological entity; this atlas follows the Micropoecilia combination consistent with the Catalog of Fishes valid name while noting the Poecilia usage common in the genomics literature.

The Micropoecilia / picta-parae group is of outsized scientific interest because it is one of the classic systems for studying the evolution of sex chromosomes, sex-linked colour, and reproductive specialisations in livebearers. P. bifurca, as a member of this clade, has accordingly become a comparative reference point even though its own natural history remains thinly documented.

This fish was long listed as Micropoecilia bifurca; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Poecilia, and the current combination Poecilia bifurca is followed here.

Morphology

Poecilia bifurca is a very small fish. FishBase gives a maximum length of about 1.2 in total length, placing it firmly among the miniature poeciliids — smaller than the common guppy and built on the same slender, cylindrical plan typical of the swamp-guppy group. The body is elongate and laterally compressed toward the tail, with the upturned mouth and dorsally flattened head profile characteristic of fishes that feed at and just below the water surface.

Like its relatives the species is sexually dimorphic, a point confirmed by the recent genome study, which relied on distinguishing males and females. As in other members of the picta–parae–bifurca clade, males are the smaller, more ornamented sex and bear the gonopodium — the modified anal fin used in mating — while females are larger, deeper-bodied and comparatively plain. Detailed published descriptions of the species' colour pattern are sparse, and this atlas does not assert a precise male coloration that the available sources do not document; data on fin shape and pigment for bifurca specifically remain limited.

Meristic and proportional data for the species are similarly thin in accessible sources. What can be stated with confidence is the small adult size, the livebearer body plan, and the presence of clear sexual dimorphism — beyond that, the morphology is best described as data-sparse pending a dedicated redescription.

Habitat

Poecilia bifurca is a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical fish of South America. FishBase places its distribution in the Amazon River basin, and hobby and field documentation extends the picture northward across the Guiana Shield: the species has been recorded from the Maroni River of French Guiana and the lab specimens used in the 2025 genome study were sourced from around Paramaribo, Suriname. Taken together, the records sketch a range spanning the coastal rivers and swamps of the Guianas and Suriname through to the Amazon basin proper.

The genus as a whole is associated with small, soft, slightly acidic coastal and swamp waters — sluggish, shallow, often tannin-stained habitats of the lowland tropics rather than open rivers or lakes. This is consistent with the water chemistry under which the genome specimens were maintained in the laboratory: temperatures of 79–82 °F and a pH of roughly 6.0–7.0, soft and near-neutral to mildly acidic. Such conditions — warm, soft, low-pH coastal lowland water — are the natural envelope one would expect for a small swamp guppy of the Guianas and western Amazonia.

Because precise field measurements for bifurca are not well documented in the accessible literature, the habitat picture here leans on genus-level pattern plus the husbandry parameters reported for live specimens. The species should be understood as a fish of warm, soft, slightly acidic lowland waters of north-eastern South America rather than tied to any single river type.

Feeding

No detailed diet study for Poecilia bifurca appears in the accessible sources, and FishBase reports only a modelled trophic level of about 3.0 — squarely in the range of small omnivores and micro-predators rather than dedicated herbivores or piscivores. On that basis, and by analogy with the well-studied guppies and swamp guppies of the same lineage, the species is best treated as an opportunistic micro-omnivore.

Fishes of this size and ecology typically take a mixture of fine animal and plant matter: aquatic micro-invertebrates, small insect larvae (including, in surface-feeding swamp guppies, mosquito larvae), zooplankton, and the algae, biofilm and detritus available in shallow, vegetated lowland waters. The small upturned mouth points to surface and near-surface feeding on drifting and suspended items.

In captivity a fish of this profile would be expected to accept finely powdered or crushed flake, micro-pellets, and small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, microworm and newly hatched brine shrimp, alongside the grazing it does on aquarium biofilm. Specific feeding observations for bifurca itself remain data-sparse, so the dietary account here is framed by trophic modelling and close-relative behaviour rather than by direct study of this species.

Mating

Poecilia bifurca reproduces by internal fertilisation, the defining reproductive mode of the family Poeciliidae. Males possess a gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — which is used to transfer sperm directly into the female. This is the same mechanism seen across the guppies and their relatives, and it frees livebearers from any dependence on a spawning substrate: mating can occur whenever a receptive female and a mature male meet.

In the broader guppy/swamp-guppy lineage to which bifurca belongs, mating behaviour combines male courtship display with persistent pursuit, and females can store viable sperm internally so that a single insemination fuels several successive broods. The species' close relatives Micropoecilia picta and M. parae are noted in the literature for strong, often sex-linked male colour polymorphism that interacts with female choice; whether bifurca shows comparable male colour morphs is not established in the accessible sources, so this atlas does not assert it.

What is documented is the clear sexual dimorphism of the species and its membership in a clade that is a flagship system for studying sex chromosomes, dosage compensation and sex-linked traits. The mechanics of mating — gonopodial insemination, internal fertilisation, and the potential for sperm storage — can be stated with confidence; the finer behavioural details specific to bifurca remain to be described.

Breeding

As a poeciliid, Poecilia bifurca is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. FishBase classifies the species' resilience as high, with an estimated population doubling time of under fifteen months — the kind of rapid turnover expected of a small, fast-maturing livebearer that breeds more or less continuously under favourable warm conditions.

The Micropoecilia / Poecilia lineage is the classic system for studying livebearer reproductive specialisations such as placentotrophy (maternal provisioning of embryos through a placenta-like structure) and superfetation (carrying several broods at different developmental stages simultaneously). These traits are well documented in various members of the group, but the 2025 genome study is explicit that it does not report brood size, gestation length, or the presence of placentotrophy or superfetation for bifurca specifically. This atlas therefore does not assign bifurca a precise brood size, gestation period, or maternal-provisioning mode, since the data are not available — the species may or may not share the more extreme reproductive specialisations of its relatives.

What can be said is that bifurca gives live birth, matures quickly, and is capable of rapid population growth. Newborn poeciliid fry are fully formed and able to swim and feed immediately, and as in related livebearers would require dense cover to survive, since adults of the group readily predate their own young. The specific reproductive parameters for this species are best flagged as data-sparse.

In the aquarium

Poecilia bifurca is a specialist's fish rather than a community-tank staple. It is rarely traded, reaching hobbyists mainly through dedicated livebearer enthusiasts and occasional wild imports from Suriname and the Guianas rather than through general aquarium-shop stock. The genome study's lab specimens came in via a Suriname wildlife exporter under fisheries-department permit, which fairly reflects how seldom the species moves through ordinary channels.

The husbandry parameters reported for live specimens give a clear starting point: warm water around 79–82 °F and a soft, near-neutral to mildly acidic pH of roughly 6.0–7.0. This points to a soft-water setup — the opposite of the hard, alkaline conditions the common guppy tolerates — ideally a quiet, well-planted aquarium with gentle filtration, perhaps blackwater-style with botanicals to lower and buffer the pH. As a tiny, surface-oriented fish it is best kept in a single-species or carefully chosen soft-water community, away from boisterous or much larger tankmates that would outcompete or harass it.

Given the species' small size and the scarcity of detailed husbandry literature, prospective keepers should treat it as a project fish: source healthy wild or line-bred stock, replicate soft warm acidic water, keep it in a group, and expect to learn its requirements partly by careful observation. It is not a beginner's livebearer, and its care rating reflects the soft-water demands and limited availability rather than any particular fragility.

Conservation

Poecilia bifurca has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List. FishBase, in its 2025 update, records the species' IUCN status as Not Evaluated, and no species-level Red List assessment exists; it is likewise Not Evaluated under CITES and the CMS. There is therefore no formal conservation category, population trend, or list of threats sanctioned by a conservation authority for this fish.

In the absence of a dedicated assessment, only general inferences are appropriate. The species appears reasonably widespread across the coastal Guianas, Suriname and the Amazon basin, and FishBase rates its resilience as high and its fishing vulnerability as low — characteristics that, for a small, fast-breeding, low-value lowland livebearer, do not on their face suggest acute risk. That said, the soft-water swamp and coastal habitats it favours are exactly the kinds of lowland systems vulnerable to drainage, pollution and land-use change across tropical South America.

No conclusion about the species' true status should be drawn from this atlas beyond the documented fact that it is unassessed. The responsible note for aquarists is the standard one for any wild-collected, locally distributed livebearer: support captive propagation where possible, and never release aquarium fish into local waters.
