Beaufortia elongata was described by Vo Quang Mai in 1978, which is why the authority appears in parentheses — a convention indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus before being confirmed in Pseudogastromyzon. The genus Pseudogastromyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae, the hillstream loaches or torrent loaches of South and East Asia, a group characterised by the extreme flattening of the head and body that is the defining adaptation to life in cascades and rapids.
The genus Pseudogastromyzon is closely allied to Gastromyzon, the Bornean hillstream loaches, and to other balitorid genera of southern China and Indochina. Relationships within the group have been subject to revision as molecular and morphological work has clarified the limits of these genera, and the genus name should be verified against the current Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) for the most recent valid combination. Habitat

Feeding
Beaufortia elongata is an aufwuchs grazer — it scrapes biofilm, diatoms, microalgae and associated micro-invertebrates from rock surfaces using its specialised, fleshy lips. This is not a generalised feeding strategy that translates easily to prepared foods; it is a highly evolved behaviour tied directly to a habitat of fast water and rock. In the absence of a mature, well-established biofilm on rockwork, this fish starves. That is the single most important fact about its diet.
In a well-set-up aquarium it will graze continuously across glass, rocks and equipment, and this grazing activity can be supplemented with sinking wafers (algae wafers and spirulina-based discs), blanched vegetables such as courgette and cucumber, and small frozen foods including cyclops and baby brine shrimp. Live biofilm, however, is not optional; it is the dietary foundation, and a tank set up specifically for this species should be run for several weeks before the fish is introduced, allowing algae and diatoms to colonise the rocks.

Breeding
Beaufortia elongata has not been bred in home aquaria to any documented degree in English-language sources. It is an egg-scattering hillstream loach with no parental care: eggs are deposited among substrate stones in fast, well-oxygenated water, and neither parent guards or tends the clutch. The larvae, once hatched, are very small and would require a supply of naturally developing microalgae and infusoria — conditions difficult to engineer deliberately.
A few closely related hillstream loaches, notably Sewellia lineolata, have been spawned in mature, high-flow river-style aquaria by dedicated keepers who have replicated the species' cool, fast-water habitat closely. It is plausible that B. elongata could be induced to spawn under similar conditions, but no verified account exists in accessible literature. The honest assessment is: not bred in home aquaria under normal circumstances. For any keeper interested in attempting it, the priority is establishing a stable, mature, strongly-flowing cool-water setup long before introducing fish.
In the aquarium
Beaufortia elongata is an uncommon fish in the trade and a genuinely demanding one: it is not suitable for a warm, still community aquarium. The requirements are specific and non-negotiable. Temperature should be kept cool — ideally in the 61–72 °F range that matches the natural montane stream environment; a standard tropical community tank at 79–82 °F is too warm for long-term health. Filtration must produce strong, turbulent flow across open rock surfaces — a high-flow canister or powerhead directed across a rocky aquascape is appropriate. Dissolved oxygen must be high, meaning surface agitation is essential, and the tank must never be sealed or under-filtered.
The substrate should be smooth boulders and flat stones rather than gravel or sand, and the rockscape must be mature — colonised with biofilm and diatoms — before the fish is introduced. A bare or newly set-up tank is a death sentence for this species; it will starve on clean glass. Because it is near-scaleless in the manner of all balitorids, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength doses of many treatments, so any disease management must use carefully chosen products at reduced doses.
This is not a beginner's fish and not a group-mandatory species in the same way botiids are, though it is likely more at ease with conspecifics or similarly-sized hillstream loaches than alone. Given the rarity of the species in the trade, experienced hillstream-loach keepers who have already established a mature, high-flow, cool-water system are the right audience for it.
Conservation
Beaufortia elongata has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Many members of the Balitoridae in southern China and Indochina share this status — the group is diverse, taxonomically complex, and poorly covered by assessment programs relative to its species richness.
The genus Pseudogastromyzon inhabits small hill streams that are inherently vulnerable to the pressures affecting montane freshwater habitats across southern Asia: agricultural runoff and sedimentation, deforestation of catchments, water extraction, and the construction of small dams and weirs that interrupt flow and alter the thermal and oxygen regime that torrent specialists depend on. Species with naturally restricted distributions and highly specific habitat requirements are disproportionately at risk from such changes, even when no formal assessment records a threat.
B. elongata is rarely traded and there is no evidence of significant collection pressure from the aquarium hobby. The practical conservation concern for this and comparable species is catchment-level habitat integrity in its native Vietnam and adjacent range.
