Taxonomy & naming
Beaufortia daon was described by the Vietnamese ichthyologist Nguyen Van Mai in 1978, hence the parenthetical authority (Mai, 1978). The genus Pseudogastromyzon Nichols & Pope, 1927 belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream or torrent loaches — a group of strongly flattened rheophilic fishes found across southern and eastern Asia. Balitoridae has been subject to significant taxonomic revision: older classifications placed many of its members in the broader Homalopteridae or within a very wide Balitoridae sensu lato, and the boundaries of the family have shifted as molecular and morphological studies have resolved the group. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Pseudogastromyzon as a valid genus within Balitoridae.
The species occupies a genus of roughly a dozen named forms distributed across southern China and adjacent Indochina. Pseudogastromyzon is most diverse in the Pearl River drainage and surrounding upland systems of Guangdong, Guangxi, and northern Vietnam. B. daon, described from Vietnam, sits at the southern edge of the genus's known range. Primary taxonomic information for this species remains data-sparse in international databases; the original description is in Vietnamese-language literature and not widely indexed.
This fish was long listed as Pseudogastromyzon daon; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Beaufortia, and the current combination Beaufortia daon is followed here.
Morphology
Beaufortia daon shares the body plan common to the entire hillstream loach radiation: the fish is strongly dorsoventrally flattened, with pectoral and pelvic fins that spread horizontally and, together with the broad, flat belly, create an adhesive surface that holds the fish against rock in torrential current. The head is broad, the snout rounded, and the mouth is positioned ventrally — a fleshy, papillated disc adapted for rasping biofilm from hard substrates. The eyes sit dorsally, providing an upward field of view while the fish hugs the rock.
Adult size in the genus Pseudogastromyzon is typically under 2 in standard length; B. daon is not documented to deviate from this range, though precise data for the species are sparse. Body colouration in the genus tends toward sandy browns and tans with darker mottling or banding that provides camouflage against the stream bed. The body is largely scaleless or covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales, leaving the skin effectively naked — a property shared with most balitorids and with practical implications for medication sensitivity.
Habitat
Beaufortia daon is native to upland hill streams of northern Vietnam, where it occupies clear, cool, fast-flowing water over smooth bedrock, cobble and gravel. These are torrential, highly oxygenated environments: the water is typically shallow, strongly lit, and carries dissolved oxygen close to saturation. Substrates are dominated by bare rock and coarse gravel colonised by dense biofilm — the algal and diatom mats that constitute the fish's principal food source.
The species is a rheophile in the strict sense: it is not merely tolerant of fast water but dependent on it for respiration as well as feeding. At low flow and elevated temperature, dissolved oxygen drops and these fish suffocate rapidly. The stream systems it inhabits lie at elevation, and water temperatures are likely to be distinctly cooler than those of lowland tropical rivers, following the pattern of the genus across southern China and Indochina.
Feeding
Beaufortia daon is an aufwuchs grazer — it rasps algae, diatoms and the microbial biofilm that coats submerged rock in fast, sunlit hill streams. The ventrally positioned, papillated mouth is purpose-built for this: the fish works across rock surfaces with characteristic crawling movements, scraping a thin but nutritious layer of microorganisms from the stone.
In an aquarium this translates to one of the species's most important and frequently misunderstood needs: a mature tank whose rock surfaces carry a visible, grazeable biofilm. A fish placed into a newly set-up tank, or one with bare glass and plastic decor, encounters essentially nothing to eat and will starve even if the keeper is offering food. Supplementary feeding should include biofilm-promoting algae-covered rocks from an established tank, blanched greens (courgette, spinach, cucumber), high-quality algae wafers and sinking tablets, and occasional small frozen invertebrates such as daphnia or cyclops. This is not a fish that will subsist on leftover flake that drifts to the bottom.
Mating
Little specific information on reproductive behaviour in Beaufortia daon has been published in the accessible literature. The genus is closely related to Gastromyzon from Borneo and Sewellia from Vietnam and Laos, the latter of which is among the better-studied hillstream loaches in the hobby context and has been spawned in mature, high-flow aquaria. Reproductive biology in hillstream loaches generally involves seasonal cues linked to water temperature and flow changes — the onset of cooler, higher-flow conditions appears to trigger ripening in several species.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle or absent in most Pseudogastromyzon species. Mature females tend to be visibly broader in the body when viewed from above, while males may show more prominent tubercles or roughened tissue on the snout and pectoral fin rays at breeding time. These characters are difficult to read without a direct comparison of multiple individuals.
Breeding
No confirmed aquarium spawning of Beaufortia daon is documented in the accessible hobby or scientific literature, and the species is rarely encountered in the trade. In the genus and family more broadly, spawning is oviparous with no parental care: eggs are deposited among gravel and stones in flowing water and are left unguarded. There is no cave-guarding behaviour, no mouthbrooding, and no nest construction — the egg-scattering mode is uniform across hillstream loaches.
Hillstream loaches as a group are rarely bred in home aquaria, though a few species — notably Sewellia lineolata from Vietnam — have been spawned in carefully maintained, high-flow, mature river-style tanks. For B. daon the honest summary is that breeding data are absent, and a keeper should not expect to spawn this fish under normal aquarium conditions. If an attempt is to be made, the prerequisites would be: a species-only or very quiet tank, substantial powerhead-driven current, a deep bed of fine gravel over smooth stones, a mature biofilm surface, and a seasonal drop in water temperature and increase in flow to simulate the onset of the breeding season.
In the aquarium
Beaufortia daon is a specialist fish suited to a dedicated hillstream biotope setup, not a community tank. The non-negotiable requirements are: strong, continuous flow (a powerhead or wavemaker directed across a rockscape), high dissolved oxygen, cool water temperatures aligned with the hill-stream habitat, and — critically — a mature tank whose rocks carry dense biofilm. A newly established tank with clean rock cannot sustain this species regardless of other parameters.
Tank size should comfortably accommodate a group of four to six individuals: hillstream loaches are not strictly shoaling fish, but a small group reduces the territorial friction that can occur between males sharing the same patch of rock. The substrate should be smooth river stones, cobble and fine gravel — no sharp substrate. Avoid sharing the tank with boisterous or fast-moving species that will out-compete the loach for food on the bottom. Being effectively scaleless the species is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many treatments; half-doses and gentle products are the rule for any medication, while maintaining pristine water quality is the single best preventive measure. Temperature in the aquarium should err on the cool side; prolonged exposure to warm, stagnant, low-oxygen conditions is the most common cause of loss in this and related genera.
Conservation
Beaufortia daon has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated. As a narrow-range upland stream fish endemic to northern Vietnam, it is inherently vulnerable to the localised threats that affect hill-stream specialists across the region: sedimentation from deforestation and agricultural run-off, water abstraction, small-scale hydropower development, and mining activity, all of which alter the flow regime, reduce dissolved oxygen and smother the bedrock surfaces on which the fish depends.
The species appears rarely in the ornamental trade, and there is no documented commercial harvesting pressure. Its small body size and restricted habitat type place it in a risk category comparable to other range-limited Pseudogastromyzon species, several of which are suspected to be narrowly endemic to single river drainages. A formal Red List assessment with current field surveys would be valuable; in the absence of one, the precautionary approach treats this fish as potentially sensitive and recommends sourcing only from responsible, sustainably-operated suppliers.
