Labigastromyzon changtingensis, the Changting hillstream loach, is a small, beautifully patterned balitorid from the swift, cool hill streams of Guangdong Province in southern China. Its dorsoventrally flattened body and broad, fan-like paired fins have been shaped by a life spent plastered to boulders in churning, oxygen-saturated water, and every aspect of its biology — diet, temperature tolerance, breathing, behaviour — is a direct expression of that fast-water world. It reaches around 7.7 cm in total length and grazes biofilm and diatoms from rock surfaces, thriving only in mature aquaria with strong current and stable, cool conditions. Kept correctly, it is a long-lived and rewarding species; kept in a warm, still, bare tank, it starves and suffocates.

Taxonomy & naming

Labigastromyzon changtingensis was described by Liang in 1942 from specimens collected in the Changting district — now Longyan, Fujian — and the surrounding hill-stream drainages of southern China. The genus Pseudogastromyzon was erected for a cluster of small, strongly flattened gastromyzontid loaches endemic to the Pearl River system and its tributaries; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the valid name as Labigastromyzon changtingensis Liang, 1942.

A 2023–2024 molecular and morphological revision by Chen and colleagues proposed transferring this species to a newly erected genus, Labigastromyzon, on the basis of integrative phylogenetic evidence; the combination Labigastromyzon changtingensis appears in the recent literature and in some aquarium trade sources. This article follows the Catalog of Fishes standard, retaining Pseudogastromyzon pending full incorporation of that revision. Trade literature and retailer pages may list the fish under either name.

A recognized subspecies, Labigastromyzon changtingensis tungpeiensis (Chen & Liang, 1949), occurs in parts of the Beijiang system in Guangdong, including Wengyuan, Lian and Lechang counties. The family placement is Balitoridae (hillstream loaches, sometimes treated under the broader Gastromyzontidae depending on authority).

This fish was long listed as Pseudogastromyzon changtingensis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Labigastromyzon, and the current combination Labigastromyzon changtingensis is followed here.

Morphology

Like all hillstream loaches, L. changtingensis is built for life in fast, turbulent water. The body is strikingly flattened from above and below — dorsoventrally depressed — with a broad, rounded head, a blunt snout equipped with sensory tubercles, and paired pectoral and pelvic fins that spread out horizontally like wings to increase the surface area used for passive adhesion to the substrate. This arrangement, combined with the fish's flattened ventral surface, functions as a hydrodynamic anchor against the push of current rather than a true muscular sucker.

Colouration is a warm brown to golden base overlaid with a dark, irregular mottled or banded pattern that breaks up the fish's outline against sunlit rock — an effective form of disruptive camouflage. Fins are often marked with subtle banding. Maximum total length is recorded at 3 in, though aquarium specimens frequently remain somewhat smaller; the fish is slender and lightweight in profile despite its wide span. The skin is smooth, with very reduced, deeply embedded scales, leaving the flanks nearly naked — a detail that matters during medication. Unlike botiid loaches, balitorid hillstream loaches do not carry the suborbital spine: there is no erectile cheek-spine in this group. Sexing is difficult; ripe females may appear slightly fuller-bodied in the belly region, but external distinction between the sexes is unreliable.

Habitat

Labigastromyzon changtingensis is native to the Beijiang and Xijiang river systems in Guangdong Province, southern China, with additional populations in parts of the Fujian highlands. These are upland and foothill drainages running over exposed rock and gravel — fast, shallow riffles and runs where the water is cool, highly oxygenated and gin-clear for much of the year. The substrate is clean rock and coarse gravel swept free of silt by the current, colonised by a layer of diatoms, algae and microbial biofilm that forms the basis of the loach's diet.

Water temperatures in these streams are distinctly cool by tropical standards, ranging broadly between roughly 18 and 75 °F depending on altitude, season and shade. The current is strong enough to continuously replenish dissolved oxygen at or near saturation. This is not lowland tropical fish habitat: it is a cool, turbulent, well-lit, minerally stable environment more akin to a fast-flowing mountain stream than a sluggish river — a distinction that is the single most important fact a prospective keeper must absorb.

Feeding

Labigastromyzon changtingensis is an obligate aufwuchs grazer — it feeds by rasping diatoms, microalgae, fine biofilm and associated micro-invertebrates from the surface of rocks and hard substrate. In its native streams, exposed, light-washed boulders and rock faces support a thin but continuously replenished layer of this microbiological mat, and the fish forages across it almost constantly.

In the aquarium, a species newly installed in a bare or recently set-up tank is at serious risk of starvation: there is nothing to eat. The fish needs a mature tank in which rocks, glass and hardscape have been colonised by a visible film of algae and biofilm — typically a minimum of several months of running with light and nutrients. Once established, the loach will graze actively across every hard surface, supplemented by small sinking foods: cucumber discs, blanched courgette or spinach, algae wafers and sinking micro-pellets. Occasional small frozen foods (daphnia, baby brine shrimp) are accepted and beneficial. Flake food dropped into the current is not a reliable staple: the fish is adapted to a life of patient surface-grazing, not surface-feeding in open water.

Mating

Sexing L. changtingensis with confidence is difficult in normal viewing. Mature females may appear somewhat deeper-bodied in the belly when carrying eggs, and some aquarists report that males can look slightly slimmer and longer in proportion, but there are no reliable permanent external characters. The fish is reportedly kept and spawned in groups rather than true pairs: a social group of four or more individuals in a well-maintained river tank is considered the appropriate setup for conditioning.

Condition is linked to cool water, strong flow, high oxygen and an abundant biofilm food supply. Published aquarium accounts from related Pseudogastromyzon species suggest that males may show loose territorial or display behaviour on rock surfaces during pre-spawning, and that the sexes come together briefly for egg deposition before separating. The signal for breeding readiness appears to be seasonal: a period of slightly cooler temperatures followed by a gradual return toward the warmer end of the range, mimicking natural stream temperature cycles in subtropical Guangdong.

Breeding

Labigastromyzon changtingensis can spawn in a mature aquarium, though it requires specific conditions and success is not routine. It is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: eggs are deposited among stones, gravel interstices and the base of the rockscape in fast-flowing water, then abandoned. From accounts of related Pseudogastromyzon species, incubation takes approximately 4 to 14 days at cool water temperatures, and larvae at hatching measure around 0.39 in total length — small, yolk-sac-bearing fry that are extremely vulnerable and require very fine biofilm or infusoria as a first food.

Most casual attempts at keeping hillstream loaches in ordinary aquaria do not result in spawning. The prerequisites — a fully mature, algae-rich riverine setup with cool, strongly oxygenated water and a small social group in good condition — are demands that many aquaria simply do not meet. Where the conditions are right, however, L. changtingensis is more approachable than many hillstream loaches; hobbyists keeping the fish in species tanks with high-flow sumps or powerhead-driven river currents have reported occasional spawnings. There is no parental care, no nest-guarding and no mouthbrooding at any stage.

In the aquarium

The Changting hillstream loach is a specialised, rewarding fish for the keeper prepared to build its world correctly. Its needs diverge fundamentally from the average community aquarium. The water must be cool — 68–75 °F — and it must move: a strong, preferably turbulent current is not a luxury but a respiratory requirement, as the fish depends on fast-moving water to keep dissolved oxygen at the high levels its metabolism demands. A powerhead, circulation pump or dedicated river-current device is essential; standard canister filtration alone is insufficient. Aeration is important.

The tank must be mature — ideally months old — so that rocks, glass and décor are coated in the biofilm and algae that make up the bulk of the diet. A freshly set-up tank is a death sentence: the fish arrives to find bare rock and starves. Once the setup is established, keep the group at four to six or more individuals; L. changtingensis is a social species that does poorly in isolation. Tank size should suit adult fish of up to 3 in with ample swimming and grazing room across a broad rock footprint — a 23.6–35.4 in aquarium is a reasonable minimum for a small group.

Because the skin is almost scale-free, the fish is sensitive to medications, especially copper-based treatments. Half-doses and careful, proven-safe products are the rule whenever treatment is necessary. Hillstream loaches are also among the first fish in a tank to show the effects of elevated temperatures or poor oxygenation. Lifespan in good conditions can reach 8 to 10 years — a meaningful commitment that deserves a well-considered setup from the start.

Conservation

Labigastromyzon changtingensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE). Its range is restricted to the Beijiang and Xijiang drainages and adjacent upland streams of Guangdong and Fujian — a geographically limited endemic with a naturally small global footprint.

The primary pressures facing hill-stream fauna in southern China are broadly consistent across the region: catchment deforestation and erosion that silts up gravel substrates, dam construction that modifies flow regimes and temperatures, water pollution from agriculture and industry, and increasing urbanisation in the Pearl River catchment. As a specialist that requires clean, cool, fast-flowing water over open rock, L. changtingensis is likely sensitive to any of these changes that warm, slow or degrade its stream habitat. The trade in hillstream loaches of the Pseudogastromyzon group typically relies on wild-collected fish; there is no significant captive farming infrastructure for this genus. The extent of collection pressure on wild populations is not well documented.
