Labigastromyzon fangi is a small, dorsoventrally flattened hillstream loach from the fast, cool mountain streams of Guangxi province in southern China, where it clings to rock faces in the Li River system using its ventral sucker and rasps biofilm from the stone. Described by Nichols in 1931, it is one of four or five species in its genus — all compact, torrent-adapted Balitoridae of southern China and mainland Southeast Asia. It reaches about 5–7 cm in standard length, demands cold, highly oxygenated, swiftly flowing water, and subsists on the algae and diatoms it grazes from mature, colonised rock surfaces. For the keeper, the consequences of getting any of those three requirements wrong are swift: placed in warm, still, or newly set-up tanks it suffocates and starves. Done right, a current-swept rockscape in the 16–22 °C range covered in living biofilm rewards the keeper with an animated, surprisingly sociable little fish clinging to the glass and darting between stones.

Taxonomy & naming

Labigastromyzon fangi was described by the American ichthyologist John Treadwell Nichols in 1931, based on specimens from the Li River drainage in Guangxi, southern China; the parentheses around his name signal that the species has since been transferred out of the original genus under which Nichols described it. The valid genus Pseudogastromyzon was erected to accommodate a small cluster of dorsoventrally flattened torrent loaches from southern China and neighbouring parts of Indochina, distinct from the closely related Gastromyzon of Borneo.

The family Balitoridae (formerly often grouped with hill-stream species under a broadly defined Homalopteridae) is now used for these Asian torrent loaches following the revisions of Kottelat and others. The Catalog of Fishes lists Labigastromyzon fangi as the valid name; no widely used synonyms or trade aliases have been documented for this species, which remains obscure in the hobby relative to better-known hillstream loaches such as the reticulated hillstream loach (Sewellia lineolata) or the Hong Kong pleco (Pseudogastromyzon myersi). The genus contains four to five recognised species, all endemic to fast hill streams of the region.

This fish was long listed as Pseudogastromyzon fangi; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Labigastromyzon, and the current combination Labigastromyzon fangi is followed here.

Morphology

Like all members of its genus, Labigastromyzon fangi is built for life on rock in fast water: the body is strongly flattened top-to-bottom, the paired fins are spread wide and held horizontally, and the mouth and belly together form a functional sucker that locks the fish against the substrate even in torrential current. The head is broad and depressed, the snout blunt, and the mouth is positioned ventrally, lined with fine rasping surfaces adapted for scraping biofilm from hard substrates. Adults reach 2–2.8 in in standard length — a small fish by any measure.

The skin is largely scaleless or bears only tiny embedded scales, leaving the fish effectively bare; this matters in care because near-scaleless loaches absorb medications and dissolved copper readily and cannot tolerate standard doses of many treatments. Coloration is cryptic: a brownish or olive ground colour marked with darker mottling or banding across the back, giving camouflage against the algae-stained rock surfaces it inhabits. Unlike the botiid loaches, Pseudogastromyzon does not carry an erectile suborbital spine — the sucker-morphology hillstream lineage evolved in a different direction from the spined botiids, and the suborbital spine is absent.

Habitat

Labigastromyzon fangi is endemic to the fast, shallow, well-oxygenated hill streams of the Li River system in Guangxi, southern China — a karst landscape of remarkably clear water tumbling over limestone and granite substrates. The water is cool (61–72 °F), well-oxygenated by constant turbulence, slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5), and practically free of organic loading. Current is strong and continuous; there are no seasonal still-water phases in this fish's life the way there are for monsoon-adapted species.

The microhabitat is rock face and riffle: the fish spends its life pressed against stones, pebbles and bedrock in stretches where the current is fastest, where light penetrates to fuel the algal and diatom biofilm that is its food supply. It is a rheophilic specialist in the fullest sense — the combination of cold temperature, high dissolved oxygen, swift flow and clean, algae-colonised rock is not a preference but a physiological requirement. It does not venture into deep, slow, or silted water.

Feeding

Labigastromyzon fangi is an aufwuchs grazer: it rasps diatoms, algae, micro-invertebrates, and organic biofilm from rock surfaces using its specialised ventrally placed mouth. This is not a casual dietary preference but the central fact of its ecology. In the wild, the fish lives in nutrient-poor, fast-flowing, sunlit streams where every rock is colonised by a living skin of microorganisms — and that skin is its staple.

In the aquarium, the implications are stark. A tank that has been running for less than three to six months, or that lacks direct or indirect light for algal growth, or that has rocks regularly scrubbed clean, provides nothing for this fish to eat. It will investigate wafers placed on the substrate and accepts blanched greens such as courgette, spinach, or cucumber, as well as high-quality sinking algae wafers and small frozen foods such as Daphnia and bloodworm. But none of these substitutes replace an established biofilm base — the fish is a grazer, not a scavenger, and starving slowly in a clean bare tank is the single commonest cause of death in captivity. A keeper should establish a mature, algae-coated rockscape well before introducing the fish.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Labigastromyzon fangi is not well documented. In related hillstream loach genera, mature females tend to be noticeably deeper-bodied and broader-flanked than males when in gravid condition, and males in some species develop subtle tubercles or a roughened texture on the snout and pectoral fin rays during the breeding season; whether similar differences hold in this species is not established in the available literature.

Spawning behaviour in the genus is poorly described. By analogy with other hillstream loaches of the Balitoridae, courtship likely involves males pursuing gravid females across rock surfaces in areas of strong current, potentially with some lateral posturing or pressing behaviour, before eggs are deposited among stones. The triggers are presumed to be seasonal — possibly tied to temperature drops and increased flow in the cooler months of the Guangxi autumn and winter — but these cues have not been characterised for this species in captivity.

Breeding

Labigastromyzon fangi is rarely if ever bred in home aquaria, and no reliable accounts of successful captive spawning are documented for this species in the available hobbyist or scientific literature. It is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: where breeding has been inferred or observed in related hillstream loach genera, eggs are deposited among or beneath stones in fast water and neither parent remains to guard or fan them.

For keepers, the honest position is that this fish should be acquired without expectation of breeding. In principle, a mature, strongly flowing river tank with a mature biofilm-coated rockscape, cool stable temperatures in the 61–68 °F range, and excellent water quality might provide conditions that approach those of the native stream — and a small group of well-conditioned fish might spawn opportunistically under such conditions, as has been reported for a few hillstream loach species such as Sewellia lineolata. In practice, however, very few keepers maintain conditions close enough to the native torrent environment to trigger spawning, and the species is not produced commercially for the trade.

In the aquarium

Labigastromyzon fangi is a specialist requiring conditions that most community tanks cannot provide, and it should only be kept by hobbyists prepared to meet those conditions deliberately. The tank must be mature — at minimum several months old with established algal growth on rock surfaces. Flow must be strong: multiple powerheads or a strong return pump directed across a rocky hardscape to create laminar, near-torrent current across the grazing surfaces. Temperature must stay cool, between 16 and 72 °F; at the tropical temperatures of 75–82 °F typical of community setups, the fish becomes stressed, its immune function declines, and it gradually starves even when apparently feeding. Supplemental oxygenation via airstone or venturi return is advisable.

The tank should be furnished almost entirely with smooth and irregular rocks of varying size, creating a tumbled riverbed effect with plenty of interstices and overhangs. Sand between stones is appropriate; fine gravel is tolerable. Open water is of less interest to this fish than complex rock surface area. It is a social animal and does better in groups of three to five or more individuals, where it is more confident and less likely to be displaced from feeding surfaces by a dominant individual. Being near-scaleless, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many treatments — use half-doses of gentle products and remove carbon filtration during any treatment. It should not be combined with boisterous or fast-moving community fish that will outcompete it for food or disturb its delicate grazing behaviour. This is a tank-specific fish, not a community fish.

Some keepers note that individuals become notably bolder once settled and biofilm is abundant, gripping the front glass and grazing visibly in full light — one of the more engaging sights in the hillstream tank. The learning curve is real, but the fish repays the effort.

Conservation

Labigastromyzon fangi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. Its native range is restricted to the Li River system in Guangxi, southern China — a relatively small catchment within a region under increasing human pressure from agriculture, urbanisation, and water management. However, no documented population decline or acute threat to this specific species has been published in the accessible literature, and it appears to persist in suitable stream habitats within its range.

As with many small stream endemics, the principal long-term concerns are habitat-driven: siltation from hillside agriculture degrading the clear-water rocky riffles it depends on, water extraction and flow alteration reducing current velocity, and any chemical inputs that destroy the biofilm and diatom communities that are its food base. The aquarium trade in Labigastromyzon fangi is very limited; it is occasionally collected for the specialist hillstream loach hobby but is not a high-volume commodity species, so trade pressure on wild populations is presumed low. Formal conservation evaluation would require targeted survey work.
