Paracanthocobitis botia is a small, mottled brook loach of the Nemacheilidae, the largest and least glamorous of the loach families — the true "stone loaches" that spend their lives combing gravel and sand in cool-to-mild, fast-flowing hill streams across a huge stretch of South and Southeast Asia. It rarely exceeds 8–10 cm, wears a camouflaged, blotched pattern rather than the bold banding of a botiid, and quietly earns its keep as a micro-predator, picking insect larvae off the streambed. It has cycled through more genus names than most loaches — Cobitis, Nemacheilus, Noemacheilus — before settling as Paracanthocobitis botia, and like its relatives it is essentially unknown to captive breeding: what little is understood about its reproduction comes from field observation, not the aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Francis Hamilton described this species in 1822 from northeastern Bengal, giving it the epithet botia — not to be confused with the unrelated botiid genus Botia, a coincidence of naming that has confused hobbyists for decades. Over the ensuing two centuries it has been shuffled through a run of genus placements typical of the old, catch-all Nemacheilinae: it has appeared in the literature as Cobitis botia, Nemacheilus botia and Noemacheilus botia before landing in its current genus, Acanthocobitis. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority followed here for valid names — lists it as Paracanthocobitis botia.

It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which was split out from the broader Balitoridae/Cobitidae complex and is now recognized as the largest loach family by species count. Many of its relatives — Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula, Oxynoemacheilus — were carved from the same old Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus wastebasket, so an older book or label using one of those historical combinations is very likely describing the same lineage of small stream loaches rather than a different fish.

This fish was long listed as Acanthocobitis botia; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Paracanthocobitis, and the current combination Paracanthocobitis botia is followed here.

Morphology

This is a slender, cylindrical loach, elongated rather than laterally compressed, built for holding position on the bottom of moving water. FishBase records a maximum length of 5.9 in TL, but Seriously Fish notes that most individuals actually seen in the trade and in the field run far smaller, around 3.15–3.94 in SL, and treats the larger historical figure as likely based on a misidentified specimen — a useful reminder that even well-documented loaches carry some uncertainty in their record.

Colouration is mottled and blotchy rather than sharply banded — camouflage suited to a life spent pressed against pale gravel and sand rather than the bold warning colours of a botiid. Like many nemacheilids it carries the family's diagnostic feature, a small erectile spine in a groove beneath the eye, though FishBase notes an unusual detail for this species: males lack the suborbital flap seen in some relatives, having a groove in its place. The skin is effectively naked, covered only in fine, deeply embedded scales — the same near-scaleless condition that runs through the loach group generally and makes it sensitive to certain medications.

Habitat

Paracanthocobitis botia has one of the broader ranges among stone loaches, spanning the Indus basin in Pakistan eastward through the Ganges, Chindwin, Irrawaddy, Sitang and Salween river systems to the Mae Khlong basin in Thailand, with records extending into Yunnan, China. Across that range it occupies flowing streams and rivers with clear, oxygen-rich water running over sand and gravel. Seriously Fish notes it favours slower-moving, marginal sections of these streams over the fastest riffles, and that it does well in aquarium setups built to mimic rocky hill-stream conditions.

Water temperatures recorded for the species sit in a cool-to-mild band rather than tropical warmth — FishBase gives 75–79 °F, while other sources report a slightly broader 70–79 °F — with pH generally neutral to mildly acidic (up to about 7.2–7.5). This is a temperate-leaning, well-oxygenated running-water fish, not a still, warm blackwater species, and tank conditions should reflect that.

Feeding

Paracanthocobitis botia is a benthic micro-predator. Seriously Fish reports that stomach content analysis of wild fish turns up larval chironomids (midge larvae) and ephemeropterans (mayfly nymphs), confirming a diet built around small aquatic invertebrates picked from the streambed rather than algae or detritus.

In the aquarium it readily accepts sinking foods and takes well to live and frozen fare such as Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm; it is not a fish that reliably competes for floating flake, and feeding should be aimed at the bottom to make sure it gets its share alongside faster mid-water tankmates.

Mating

Almost nothing has been documented about courtship or spawning behaviour in this species, and the cached sources here do not describe pairing, coloration changes or any courtship display. What is clear is that it is not commercially bred: Seriously Fish states plainly that specimens in the trade are wild-caught, with only rare, unverified reports of fry appearing in home aquaria. Any sexual dimorphism is similarly under-documented in the sources available, beyond the noted difference in the male's suborbital groove versus flap in some relatives — data here is genuinely sparse, and it is more honest to say so than to guess at a spawning ritual that has not been recorded.

Breeding

As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, Paracanthocobitis botia is not established in the hobby as a captive-bred fish. The species profile is consistent with the broader Nemacheilidae pattern — an egg-scatterer that broadcasts eggs over gravel and among stones in flowing water with no parental care — but detailed spawning accounts for this particular species are lacking, and Seriously Fish describes only rare, unconfirmed fry reports rather than a repeatable aquarium protocol.

Every mottled loach offered for sale should be assumed wild-collected rather than farm- or hobby-produced. Keepers should not expect to breed this species, and any success would be a genuinely notable, poorly understood event rather than a repeatable outcome.

In the aquarium

Paracanthocobitis botia suits a well-oxygenated, flowing-water setup rather than a static community tank. A sand or smooth-gravel substrate lets it forage and burrow naturally, and aquarium sources recommend a medium tank of roughly 29.5–35.4 in as adequate for its modest adult size — closer to the smaller end of the size range reported than the outlying 5.9 in maximum. Strong filtration or a powerhead to create current, along with good aeration, better reflects the cool, oxygen-rich hill streams it comes from than a warm, still tank.

It is described as a peaceful, beginner-friendly bottom dweller, but it should not be housed with boisterous or aggressive large bottom-dwelling fish that will outcompete it for food and space. Like other loaches it is essentially scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments — dose cautiously and watch it closely, since loaches are often among the first fish in a tank to show signs of ich.

Conservation

Paracanthocobitis botia is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, consistent with its wide distribution across multiple major river systems from Pakistan to Thailand and southern China. No specific population threats are identified in the sources reviewed here.

The aquarium trade for this species is sustained by wild collection rather than any farmed or hobby-bred supply, per Seriously Fish. Given its broad range and LC status this is not currently flagged as a conservation concern, but as with many wild-collected stream fish, sustained demand from the trade is worth keeping an eye on even for a widespread species.
