Paracanthocobitis rubidipinnis is a small, slender stone loach of the family Nemacheilidae, native to hill streams of India, Bangladesh and Myanmar. It is a bold, torpedo-shaped bottom-dweller of cool, fast, well-oxygenated water, built to hold station on gravel and rock in a current rather than cruise open water. Like many members of this huge, largely overlooked loach family, it is genuinely data-sparse — unassessed by the IUCN, absent from the scientific literature outside its original description and taxonomic revisions, and known mainly through hobbyist observation. Complicating matters, the fish commonly sold in the aquarium trade under this name is now thought by some taxonomists to be a different, more recently described species — a reminder that stone-loach identification stays unsettled even for popular imports.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by Edward Blyth in 1860 as Nemacheilus rubidipinnis, and for over a century it circulated under that name and its later synonym Noemacheilus rubidipinnis. In 1990 Maurice Kottelat transferred it to Acanthocobitis, and it is listed today as Paracanthocobitis rubidipinnis. A subsequent revision by Grant (2008) proposed placing it in the subgenus Acanthocobitis (Paracanthocobitis), a classification some later authors have elevated to full genus rank as Paracanthocobitis rubidipinnis; this article follows the Acanthocobitis combination.

A further wrinkle worth flagging honestly: the true, type-locality Paracanthocobitis rubidipinnis is a species of the lower Irrawaddy basin in Myanmar that appears to be essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. The loach widely sold in the trade as "rubidipinnis" or "cherry fin loach" is now believed by some workers to actually be Paracanthocobitis pictilis, a similar-looking species described later and long confused with true rubidipinnis. Care information circulating under the rubidipinnis name in hobbyist sources should therefore be read with that possibility in mind. The family placement is Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by species count the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea.

This fish was long listed as Acanthocobitis rubidipinnis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Paracanthocobitis, and the current combination Paracanthocobitis rubidipinnis is followed here.

Morphology

Paracanthocobitis rubidipinnis has the classic stone-loach build: an elongated, cylindrical body that flattens slightly toward a broad head, tapering to a slim caudal peduncle. FishBase records 14 to 15.5 branched dorsal rays and a complete lateral line running the length of the body. The mouth is subterminal and downturned, ringed with barbels well suited to probing gravel and sediment for food — hobbyist accounts note the barbels as notably long. Like other nemacheilids it carries the small, erectile suborbital spine typical of the loach superfamily, tucked in a groove beneath the eye, along with the near-scaleless skin that runs through the group.

Maximum recorded length is around 3.9 in standard length according to FishBase, though hobby sources cite adult sizes closer to 3.1 in total length — a small, unassuming fish built for holding position against current rather than showy display.

Habitat

This is a hillstream fish of cool, fast-flowing water. Field observations describe it in shady, well-oxygenated stretches of stream with a substrate of sand, gravel, rocks and boulders, often carpeted with leaf litter and a rich biofilm that the fish grazes and forages over. Flow and water character shift with the seasons: strong, high-volume currents during the monsoon give way to slower, more tannin-brown water in the dry season, and the species appears adapted to both extremes.

Its native range spans hill and foothill streams of India, Bangladesh and Myanmar. FishBase describes the species as demersal and tropical, citing a narrower reference range of roughly 73–77 °F, while hobby sources report a somewhat broader tolerance. Either way, this is running, richly oxygenated stream water, not the warm, still, blackwater habitat associated with many other tropical aquarium fish.

Feeding

Paracanthocobitis rubidipinnis is a bottom-foraging micro-predator and scavenger, working sand and gravel with its barbels for small invertebrates, insect larvae and other food items, and grazing biofilm off stones in the current. In the aquarium it is reported to be an active, opportunistic feeder that readily takes quality flake, sinking pellets, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp.

Because it forages primarily along the substrate, food should reach the bottom rather than being left to hang in open water where faster fish out-compete it; a mixed diet with regular sinking and frozen offerings best reflects its natural foraging on invertebrates and biofilm.

Mating

No reliable account of sexing, courtship or spawning behaviour for this species is documented in the sources available. Data for this and many other Nemacheilidae species is genuinely sparse — most are known chiefly from taxonomic and field-survey literature rather than reproductive study, and this species has not been observed spawning in the aquarium. Nothing here should be inferred from other, better-studied loaches; where the record is silent, the honest answer is that it is silent.

Breeding

Loaches Online reports that Paracanthocobitis rubidipinnis "has not been known to breed in captivity," and that assessment matches the pattern across most of Nemacheilidae: stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers that broadcast eggs over gravel and among stones in fast water with no parental care, but verified home spawnings are rare and this genus is no exception. There is no cave-guarding male and no mouthbrooding in this family — any breeding, where it happens at all, follows the scatter-and-abandon pattern typical of running-water loaches, triggered by conditions (flow, temperature, season) that are difficult to replicate in a home tank.

For the aquarist, the realistic expectation is that this species will not breed in a standard setup. Fish reaching the trade, whatever their precise identity, are wild-collected rather than farm-produced.

In the aquarium

Hobbyist accounts describe Paracanthocobitis rubidipinnis as an active bottom-dweller that wants dense cover — rocks and bogwood over a sand or fine-gravel substrate — combined with strong aeration and good water circulation to mimic its fast-flowing native streams. Loaches Online recommends generous weekly water changes (around 50%) and moderate hardness under about 12°dH, with a neutral to slightly acidic pH near 6.8 to 7.0 and a temperature range of roughly 68–78 °F — noticeably cooler than the tropical community-tank norm, and a useful reminder not to default this fish into warm, still water.

Temperament reports diverge somewhat: field-based habitat descriptions call the species peaceful and shy, needing hiding and resting places among plants, rocks and driftwood, while at least one hobby source describes it as territorial and capable of aggression toward tankmates. Both are plausible for a bottom-territorial stream loach and probably depend on tank size, cover and stocking; err on the side of ample hiding spots and a spacious footprint. As with other nemacheilids, the near-scaleless skin common to loaches warrants caution with copper-based and full-strength medications.

Conservation

Paracanthocobitis rubidipinnis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no conservation category applies here; it is recorded as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. FishBase likewise notes no known commercial fishery interest and no recorded threat to humans.

As a small stream endemic spread across parts of India, Bangladesh and Myanmar, its conservation picture is undocumented in the available sources — a common situation for Nemacheilidae, where most species are known only from scattered field records rather than population assessments. Given the taxonomic uncertainty over which species actually supplies the aquarium trade under this name, any trade-pressure assessment specific to true P. rubidipinnis is not established; fish reaching hobbyists are understood to be wild-collected.
