Schistura shanensis is a small stone loach known only from the Inlé Lake drainage of Myanmar's Shan States, described by Sunder Lal Hora in 1929 from the Thale-ú Stream near Fort Stedman. Reaching barely 5.2 cm, it is a modest, bottom-dwelling micro-predator that — unusually for this mostly fast-water family — inhabits the shallow, still margins of a lake rather than a rushing hill stream, sheltering among dense submerged and floating vegetation. Its narrow endemic range and the ongoing spread of invasive tilapia through Inlé Lake have earned it a Near Threatened listing, and almost nothing is documented about how, or whether, it can be kept or bred away from that one lake system.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura shanensis was described by the Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora in 1929, one of many small Southeast Asian loaches he worked through in the early twentieth century. The genus Physoschistura sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — the largest and most diverse loach family, spread across Eurasia and built almost entirely of small, slender, often narrow-range stream and lake specialists.

Nemacheilid taxonomy has been repeatedly reshuffled as researchers split the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus into narrower, better-defined groups such as Schistura, Physoschistura, Triplophysa and Barbatula. Recent taxonomic work on the Inlé Lake loach fauna has floated moving specimens historically assigned here into a proposed genus Mustura, but the Catalog of Fishes — the governing authority for valid names — has not settled that reassignment, so this profile keeps the species in Physoschistura pending a firmer consensus.

Morphology

This is a small, slender nemacheilid loach, reported to reach only about 2 in standard length — modest even by the standards of a family built on small fish. Like other members of Nemacheilidae it is an elongate, cylindrical loach with a subterminal mouth ringed by barbels for probing the substrate, small eyes set high on the head, and the reduced, deeply embedded scales typical of the group, leaving the skin close to naked.

Detailed morphological description is sparse in the literature available for this species; body pattern and fin details specific to S. shanensis are not well documented outside the original 1929 description and subsequent taxonomic notes. As with many small-range nemacheilids, the surest identification is locality — this species is currently known only from the Inlé Lake drainage — rather than a distinctive external marking.

Habitat

Schistura shanensis is endemic to the Inlé Lake drainage in the Shan States of Myanmar, with its type locality at the Thale-ú Stream near Fort Stedman on the lake's eastern shore. Unlike the fast, cool, oxygen-charged hill streams that many nemacheilid stone loaches favour, this species is recorded from shallow, still lake margins with a dense bottom cover and floating vegetation — a lentic, vegetated habitat rather than a riffle.

Specific temperature and pH data for the species have not been located in the sources reviewed. Inlé Lake sits at roughly 2953 ft elevation in Myanmar's tropical highlands, so warm, still, well-vegetated freshwater conditions can be inferred from the habitat description and geography, but no measured range is documented — this profile records that gap honestly rather than inventing figures.

Feeding

Schistura shanensis sits low in the food web, with a documented trophic level around 2.8, consistent with a bottom-foraging micro-predator that takes small invertebrates rather than plant matter or detritus. Like other small nemacheilids, it most likely works the lake-bottom vegetation and sediment for insect larvae, small crustaceans and other tiny invertebrates using its barbelled, downturned mouth.

No aquarium feeding record exists for this exact species, but the pattern is consistent across its relatives: small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and micro-crustaceans should be readily accepted, while dry flake is likely to be ignored or taken only reluctantly by a fish built to hunt live prey off the bottom.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Schistura shanensis specifically. External sexual dimorphism is not described in the sources reviewed for this species, and given how little fieldwork or aquarium exposure it has had, that is unsurprising — this is a narrow-range endemic that has drawn far more taxonomic than biological attention.

What can be said comes from a related congener: Physoschistura mango, a better-studied relative, has been reported spawning at 79–81 °F as an egg-scatterer over fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, with eggs hatching in 24–36 hours and fry becoming free-swimming a further 24–36 hours later. Whether S. shanensis follows the same pattern is presumed by family resemblance, not confirmed by direct observation.

Breeding

Schistura shanensis is presumed to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care, in keeping with the near-universal pattern across Nemacheilidae, but direct breeding data for this species is sparse to the point of absence. It has essentially not been documented spawning in the aquarium hobby, and there is no record of captive-bred stock; any specimens reaching hobbyists would be wild-collected from the Inlé Lake system.

The closest available reference point is the related Physoschistura mango, which scatters eggs over fine plant growth with no parental guarding once eggs are released — a pattern typical of stone and brook loaches generally. Given the honest state of the record, the correct summary for S. shanensis is that it is rarely or never bred in captivity, and any keeper attempting it would be working from inference rather than an established protocol.

In the aquarium

Schistura shanensis is not an established aquarium fish, and specific husbandry guidance for the species has not been documented in the sources available. What can be said with reasonable confidence, drawn from its habitat and family, is that a small (around 2 in), sensitive, narrow-range lake loach should be given a heavily planted, softly filtered setup mimicking the dense vegetation of its native Inlé Lake shallows rather than the high-flow riffle tank often recommended for hillstream nemacheilids — this is one of the exceptions within the family.

As with virtually all loaches, its skin carries much-reduced, deeply embedded scales, leaving it close to scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications; any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dosing. Given the total absence of an established care record, a prospective keeper should treat this as an experimental, likely wild-collected fish for an experienced loach keeper rather than a fish with a known aquarium track record.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Schistura shanensis as Near Threatened (NT), an assessment made by Vishwanath on 21 January 2010. The listed threat is the introduction of invasive fish — specifically tilapia — into Inlé Lake, which is inferred to be driving a population decline in this narrow-range endemic.

Because the species is known only from the Inlé Lake drainage, it has essentially no buffer against habitat-wide pressures: the lake has faced well-documented ecological stress from invasive species, siltation, agricultural runoff and shoreline development over recent decades. There is no indication in the sources reviewed that the aquarium trade is a meaningful pressure on this species; the conservation concern here is squarely about the health of Inlé Lake itself.
