Taxonomy & naming

Gymnochanda filamentosa is the type species of Gymnochanda, a genus of small Southeast Asian glassfishes in the family Ambassidae. Fraser-Brunner described it in 1945; the Catalog of Fishes type locality is not recorded in the atlas queue, so none is stated here.

Morphology

FishBase gives a maximum of 1.5 in SL. The epithet refers to filaments, which are the extended fin rays that mark the species.

Habitat

FishBase classes it as freshwater and brackish, benthopelagic and tropical, in the range 23 to 26 C, and gives its distribution as western Borneo and Malaya.

Feeding

Diet has not been recorded. Small glassfishes feed on zooplankton and tiny insects.

Mating

Courtship and spawning behaviour have not been described for this species.

Breeding

FishBase has no reproduction entry for this species.

In the aquarium

The species is rare in the trade. At under 1.5 in it belongs in a small planted tank with calm companions and tiny live foods, and the FishBase temperature range of 23 to 26 C is a sound guide. pH and hardness are not recorded.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Gymnochanda filamentosa as Least Concern in 2019.

Where it has been recorded

5 georeferenced records (GBIF). Each point is a field observation or museum specimen — pan and zoom to explore where this species turns up. The coordinates come straight from GBIF and are often rounded or tied to the nearest town or river landing, so a dot can sit just beside the actual water rather than in it.
