Taxonomy & naming
Gymnochanda ploegi was described by Tan and Lim in 2014 from the Sanggau area of West Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is one of the small Gymnochanda glassfishes of Southeast Asia, family Ambassidae.
Morphology
FishBase gives a maximum of 1 in SL. Gymnochanda are small, compressed glassfishes with a translucent body; detailed pattern and fin characters are given in the original description.
Habitat
FishBase classes it as freshwater, benthopelagic and tropical. It is found in still pools near swamp forest and in riverine systems, and its range is the Sanggau and Kapuas Lakes regions of West Kalimantan.
Feeding
Diet has not been recorded. Small glassfishes feed on zooplankton and tiny insects.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour have not been described for this species.
Breeding
FishBase has no reproduction entry, and the species has not been bred in captivity so far as the atlas records.
In the aquarium
The species is rare in the trade and sold under its scientific name. At under 1 in it suits a small planted tank with soft, still water and tiny live foods. Temperature, pH and hardness are not recorded for the species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Gymnochanda ploegi as Data Deficient in 2019, which means the information needed to judge its risk of extinction is lacking.
