Arhinolemur garmani was described by Nikolai Alexandrovich Borodin in 1929. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family named for the oblique, head-down posture many of its members adopt while grazing. The species has had an unsettled taxonomic history: the literature and aggregator databases variously list it under Leporinus, Megaleporinus and Hypomasticus, reflecting a broader, still-unresolved revision of the old, unwieldy genus Leporinus into several narrower genera. This account follows Hypomasticus, per the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), which remains the authority for the currently accepted combination; readers cross-referencing older sources should expect to find the same fish as "Leporinus garmani" or "Megaleporinus garmani."
The species epithet honours Samuel Walton Garman (1843–1927), the American ichthyologist and herpetologist who worked for decades at Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology and described numerous Neotropical fishes. Beyond the original description and its subsequent generic reassignments, published biological data on A. garmani is thin — it is not a well-studied or widely traded species, and much of what would normally fill out a species account (detailed habitat surveys, population studies, aquarium observations) simply has not been done or published for this particular fish.

Detailed colouration and fin-pattern descriptions specific to A. garmani are not well documented in accessible literature; general herbivore/omnivore trophic status (FishBase lists a trophic level of 2.6, consistent with an algae- and detritus-heavy diet supplemented by small invertebrates) is the best-supported morphological and ecological signal available for this species. Prospective keepers should treat any photograph or description not explicitly tied to garmani with caution, given how easily this species is confused with, or was until recently, classified with, other Leporinus-group headstanders.

Arhinolemur garmani reaches roughly 9.8 in, which rules out anything smaller than a large, long aquarium — this is not a nano or even a standard community-tank fish once mature. It is also rarely, if ever, seen in the aquarium trade, so most keepers will encounter it only as a taxonomic curiosity rather than a purchasing decision; anyone who does source one should plan tank size and tankmates around its full adult length from the outset, not its size on arrival.
As with its better-documented relatives Leporinus and Anostomus, headstanders in this group have a real reputation for territoriality and fin-nipping, particularly as they mature and especially toward slower, long-finned tankmates; this is not documentary exaggeration, and a keeper should provide ample swimming space, visual breaks (wood, rockwork), and either a genuinely compatible robust community or a species-appropriate solo setup rather than assuming a peaceful grazer temperament by default. Diet should lean vegetable-forward (see Feeding), and any live plants in the tank should be chosen expecting some grazing pressure.
Conservation
