Taxonomy & naming
Arhinolemur obtusidens was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1837, placing it in the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes. The genus Leporinus ("little hare", from the Latin lepus) refers to the incisor-like front teeth shared across the group, which superficially resemble a rabbit's. A 2016 taxonomic revision split a cluster of larger-bodied, deeper-flanked Leporinus species, including this one, into the new genus Megaleporinus; the species is therefore also widely cited in recent literature as Megaleporinus obtusidens. This article follows the traditional combination Arhinolemur obtusidens, noting the Megaleporinus reclassification here per the Catalog of Fishes.
The species is best known by its vernacular names: "boga" in Argentina and Uruguay, "bogón" as an augmentative form, and "piapara" in Brazil, all referring to the same fish across its wide South American range. It is one of the largest members of the genus and one of the most economically important, supporting artisanal and sport fisheries throughout the Río de la Plata system.

Morphology
Arhinolemur obtusidens has the classic headstander build carried to a large scale: a moderately elongated, laterally compressed body, a blunt snout, and small terminal-to-slightly-inferior mouth armed with incisor-like teeth suited to scraping algae and biofilm rather than seizing prey. Juveniles and subadults show bold dark vertical bars or blotches over a silvery body, a pattern that fades and breaks up into more mottled, olive-silver tones in large adults.
This is a genuinely big fish for a headstander. FishBase documents a maximum of 29.9 in total length, with typical wild adults running 15.7–31.5 in and reaching sexual maturity around 8.5 in. Weight scales dramatically with the river system: fish from the Río de la Plata average roughly 2 kg (up to 4 kg), upper Paraná populations average around 4.5 kg, and middle Paraná fish can exceed 6 kg. Keepers considering any Leporinus should treat this size range as the honest expectation for the genus's larger species, not an outlier.
Habitat
The species is native to the Paraná, Paraguay, Plata (Río de la Plata) and Uruguay basins, with additional populations recorded in the São Francisco, Guaíba and Parnaíba basins of Brazil. Within these systems it uses main river channels as well as connected streams, floodplain lakes and lagoons, sheltering among stones and aquatic vegetation and favouring areas with structure over open sand or bare rock.
Arhinolemur obtusidens is potamodromous — it migrates entirely within fresh water rather than to the sea — undertaking long upstream runs in the Paraná system that are linked to seasonal temperature change and triggered ahead of spring–summer spawning. The Paraná and Plata basins span a subtropical-to-warm-temperate climate, so this species experiences a cooler seasonal range than many Amazonian characins, a point worth keeping in mind relative to the genus's more tropical relatives further north.
Feeding
True to its headstander habits, Arhinolemur obtusidens grazes obliquely, head angled down, picking algae and biofilm (aufwuchs) from rocks, wood and vegetation with its chisel-like incisors. FishBase and habitat surveys describe it as an omnivore with a notably broad diet for the genus: aquatic plants (which it also shreds and consumes rather than merely picking over), crabs, snails, and grain or seed material, in addition to algae and biofilm.
This plant-eating tendency is a defining care consideration for the genus as a whole — Leporinus and its relatives are well known among fishkeepers for treating soft, delicate aquarium plants as food, and a tank housing any Leporinus should be planted with tough, unpalatable species or left unplanted. In the wild, the shift toward grain and seed consumption likely reflects opportunistic feeding on material washed into the system during the flood season that coincides with its spawning migration.
Mating
Spawning in Arhinolemur obtusidens is tied to its upstream migratory behaviour: adults move into weedy, shallower reaches of the Paraná system during spring and summer, with temperature rise acting as a documented migration trigger. Research on the species' reproductive biology notes that females invest heavily in reproduction — gonad and egg mass can account for more than 80% of a ripe female's reproductive tissue by weight during the breeding season, reflecting the large, energetically costly spawning runs the species undertakes.
Pairs are described as distinct rather than group-spawning in a loose aggregation, forming during the migratory run before eggs are released over vegetated substrate. No parental care follows spawning — like most headstanders, this is a scatter-and-abandon strategy, not a guarding one.
Breeding
Arhinolemur obtusidens is an egg-scattering species with no parental care, consistent with headstanders generally — this is not a nest-guarding or mouthbrooding fish. Eggs are released over weedy, vegetated areas during the spring–summer spawning migration described above, and water chemistry research on the species has found egg incubation performs best around pH 7.0, with strongly acidic water (pH 5.0–6.0) proving lethal to larvae within 24–72 hours — a useful data point on this species' tolerance limits even though it is not itself an acid-water specialist.
Breeding this species in captivity is essentially unreported in the hobby literature: its migratory, large-river spawning strategy and enormous adult size make it impractical to reproduce outside commercial or research hatchery settings, and unlike some smaller Leporinus and Anostomus that are occasionally bred by dedicated aquarists, no home-aquarium breeding accounts for A. obtusidens are documented in the sources reviewed here.
In the aquarium
Arhinolemur obtusidens is rarely kept in home aquaria, and the sources reviewed here are consistent on why: an adult reaching up to 29.9 in total length and several kilograms is simply beyond the scale of all but the largest public or specialist systems, and the species is documented primarily as a gamefish and food fish across its native range rather than as an aquarium subject. Anyone encountering juveniles in the trade should treat the adult size above as the real long-term expectation, not the size at purchase.
More broadly, the genus Leporinus carries a well-earned reputation among fishkeepers for nippiness and territoriality as individuals mature, and for readily shredding soft aquarium plants — traits relevant to anyone keeping smaller relatives in this genus even though A. obtusidens itself is not a realistic home-aquarium fish. Where very large systems (public aquaria, large ponds, aquaculture facilities) do house this species, strong water flow, ample swimming space and tough or absent live plants reflect its riverine, migratory ecology.
Conservation
Arhinolemur obtusidens is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution across multiple major South American river basins and populations that remain abundant enough to support ongoing artisanal and sport fisheries. No major range-wide threats are documented in the sources reviewed here.
As a migratory potamodromous species, however, A. obtusidens is inherently vulnerable to the same pressures facing other long-distance river migrants in the Paraná-Plata system: dams and other barriers that block or alter the upstream spawning runs central to its life cycle are a recognised watch item for potamodromous characins generally, even where the species' overall conservation status remains favourable.
