Steindachnerina leuciscus is a small, unassuming characin from the Amazon basin of Brazil — a member of the toothless-jawed family Curimatidae, the detritus- and biofilm-grazing "minor characins" that share river channels with the far more famous piranhas and pacus of the same order but live entirely different lives. Reaching only about 15 cm, it is a slim, silvery, schooling fish built for filtering organic sediment and algal film from the substrate rather than for hunting or shredding plants, and it is essentially undocumented in the aquarium trade. Steindachnerina leuciscus was described by the English zoologist Albert Günther in 1868, originally placed in a different curimatid genus before later authors moved it to Steindachnerina, a genus of small Neotropical characins named for the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner. It belongs to the family Curimatidae — the toothless, detritus-feeding "curimatas" — within the order Characiformes, a family that sits taxonomically apart from the predatory Serrasalmidae (piranhas and pacus) and the herbivorous silver dollars, despite sharing the same broad order and many of the same Amazonian rivers.

The specific epithet leucisca derives from the Greek leukískos, "white mullet," a reference to the European dace/mullet genus Leuciscus that the describer thought the fish resembled in general silvery, elongate shape — a comparison of convenience rather than any close relationship, since Steindachnerina and Leuciscus are not closely related. As with many small curimatids, the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the current valid combination, and this account keeps the genus as Steindachnerina per that standard rather than any older combination that may still circulate in older literature.
