Taxonomy & naming
Knodus diaphanus was originally described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1878. The species has been treated under more than one generic placement in the decades since: it appears in older literature as Knodus diaphanus, reflecting the taxonomic flux that has long characterised small neotropical characins. Current taxonomy, as confirmed by molecular work on Stevardiinae phylogenetics and by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, places the species in Bryconamericus, a genus within the subfamily Stevardiinae of the family Characidae.
The broader subfamily Stevardiinae (formerly elevated to family rank as Stevardiidae in some treatments) is a large and not fully resolved group of neotropical characins characterised by various reproductive specialisations and distributed widely across South America. Bryconamericus itself is a large genus of predominantly small, silver-bodied stream fishes whose species-level taxonomy continues to be refined by morphological and molecular studies. The valid name Knodus diaphanus (Cope, 1878) carries the parenthetical authority because Cope did not originally place it in this genus.
This fish was long listed as Bryconamericus diaphanus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Knodus, and the current combination Knodus diaphanus is followed here.
