Taxonomy & naming
Hopliancistrus xavante was formally described by de Oliveira, Zuanon, Rapp Py-Daniel, Birindelli and Sousa in a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus published on 20 January 2021 in PLOS ONE (volume 16, issue 1, article e0244894). The description was based on a holotype (INPA 35273, 4.5 in SL) and extensive paratype series, all from the Rio Culuene and its tributaries within the upper Rio Xingu basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; updated 10 June 2026) treats the name as valid.
Two lots previously assigned to the type series of H. tricornis by Isbrücker and Nijssen — IRSNB 692 (20 specimens) and ZMA 120.339 (19 specimens), from the von Martius Waterfall on the Xingu, collected in 1964 — were shown by the 2021 revision to belong to H. xavante, meaning the species had been in museum collections for nearly 60 years before it received a name. The same revision also described three additional new species (H. munduruku, H. wolverine, and H. xikrin) alongside the redescription of the type species H. tricornis. The hobbyist code informally used for specimens traded as 'Hopliancistrus sp. Rio da Paz (L422)' from a small eastern tributary of the Xingu near the Pará/Mato Grosso border is regarded as likely applying to H. xavante or a closely related form.
Within Hypostominae, Hopliancistrus is placed in the tribe Ancistrini. The genus is diagnosed by a patch of stout, recurved odontodes at the snout corners — the so-called 'weapons' alluded to in the genus name — and by the five rows of lateral plates on the caudal peduncle (vs. three rows in the superficially similar Lasiancistrus). Armbruster (2004) confirmed the Ancistrini placement in a broad loricariid phylogeny.
Morphology
Hopliancistrus xavante is a small loricariid; the largest specimen in the type series measured 4.5 in SL, making it comparable in adult size to a medium Ancistrus or Peckoltia. The body is wide and moderately depressed, broad at the head and narrowing to the caudal peduncle; in dorsal view the head is roughly square anteriorly, with the greatest width at head level. The head and trunk together give the fish a conspicuously stocky, powerful appearance.
The defining diagnostic feature is the nuchal plate, which is covered by thick skin and usually lacks exposed odontodes — a unique character within Hopliancistrus, where all other species expose the nuchal plate and bear odontodes on it. The nasal bone plate is broad (approximately as wide as long, sometimes slightly triangular), contrasting with the narrow nasal bone plate of congeners.
Coloration in life: body ground colour brown on head, trunk, and fins; head covered by small yellowish-white dots; dorsum, flanks, dorsal fin, caudal fin, anal fin, and dorsal surfaces of pectoral and pelvic fins covered by large yellowish-white spots, larger than pupil diameter; ventral surface pale to light brown. In preserved material the spots appear yellowish-white on a light brown dorsum.
Males develop the genus-defining recurved cheek odontodes — three large, strong, curved odontodes on the cheek plates, reaching the posterior margin of the branchial opening; a thick, fleshy odontode sheath covers approximately two-thirds of these structures. Females lack the elaborate odontode development and are typically broader-bodied in reproductive condition.
Habitat
Hopliancistrus xavante is known from small to medium-sized tributaries of the upper Rio Xingu system — specifically the Rio Culuene, Rio Curisevo, Rio Sucuri, and the Fresco and Jauri rivers in the middle portion of the Xingu — plus Cachoeira von Martius (the von Martius Waterfall), which lies in the transition zone between the upper and middle Xingu. Collection localities span a geographic arc from approximately 13°12'S to 13°55'S and 53°05' to 53°30'W in central Mato Grosso State, Brazil.
The upper Rio Xingu and its tributaries at this latitude are clear-to-slightly-turbid crystalline rivers draining the Central Brazilian Shield. Water chemistry at collection sites tends toward soft, slightly acidic to neutral: pH values in comparable Xingu tributaries typically fall between 6.2 and 7.0, conductivity often below 40 µS/cm, and temperatures in the 75–84 °F range seasonally. The rapids microhabitat associated with other Hopliancistrus species is relevant context: the genus as a whole favours cobble and boulder substrates in moderate-to-fast current, where the recurved snout odontodes help anchor the fish.
The upper Xingu basin is one of the most biodiverse freshwater systems in South America, and its tributaries retain relatively intact riparian forest — though the region is under steady pressure from agricultural expansion (particularly soybean and cattle), small hydroelectric dams, and infrastructure development along the BR-158 corridor.
Feeding
No gut-content studies specific to Hopliancistrus xavante appear in the primary literature. The feeding biology can be inferred from genus-level morphology and from the broader Ancistrini context studied by Armbruster (2004) and subsequent workers.
The large, stout recurved odontodes at the snout corners are likely used in the same way as in other rheophilic loricariids: to anchor the fish against current while the oral disc rasps algae, periphyton, and associated biofilm from the surface of boulders and cobbles. The bicuspid teeth, described in the original diagnosis as 'long, thin, delicate', with the mesial cusp slightly larger than the lateral, are consistent with scraping rather than wood-gouging or invertebrate-crushing dentitions.
Aquarium experience with the closely related H. wolverine and H. tricornis (both available in the hobby to a limited degree) suggests that Hopliancistrus feeds opportunistically on algae, biofilm, sinking pellets, and soft vegetables such as blanched courgette or cucumber. In flow-rich environments the fish grazes continuously on hard surfaces. Meaty foods in moderation are accepted but should not dominate the diet, which reflects the predominantly herbivorous scraping ecology of the genus.
Mating
Courtship and mating behaviour in H. xavante have not been observed or documented, either in the field or in captivity. The species has no registered keeper or breeder records on PlanetCatfish, and the 2021 description paper (de Oliveira et al.) focuses entirely on morphological description and taxonomy without reproductive observations.
By analogy with other Ancistrini — and particularly with what is known of the related H. tricornis, which has occasionally been kept in the hobby — Hopliancistrus males likely adopt a territory centred on a cave or crevice site, patrolling it actively and using the prominent cheek odontodes in display and dispute with rival males. The odontodes are clearly more pronounced in males of the genus (as described for H. wolverine and H. tricornis in PlanetCatfish community records), suggesting they function at least partly in intrasexual competition.
Females inspecting breeding sites would presumably be courted inside a crevice or cave, with spawning occurring within that protected space as in most cave-spawning loricariids. Whether the male guards the eggs alone, or whether there is any female participation in parental care, is unrecorded for any Hopliancistrus species.
Breeding
No successful captive breeding of Hopliancistrus xavante has been reported. PlanetCatfish lists no breeding records for the species, and the 2021 description paper does not address reproductive biology. Given the species' novelty (described 2021) and near-absence from the ornamental trade, this is unsurprising.
The broader Hopliancistrus genus is consistent with cave-spawning loricariid patterns: the male is expected to select a secure cavity — a crevice between boulders, a hollow section of submerged wood, or a ceramic cave substitute in captivity — and guard a clutch of adhesive eggs deposited on the interior walls. In rheophilic Ancistrini, the male fans the eggs continuously to maintain oxygen flow through the microenvironment of the spawning cave, and the incubation period at tropical temperatures is typically 5–9 days.
For aquarists who obtain H. xavante specimens (sourced exclusively through captive breeding or responsible collection under IBAMA permit), providing appropriate spawning conditions would mean: well-filtered, warm, slightly acidic soft water with strong surface movement; multiple narrow hiding crevices or purpose-built spawning tubes sized to the fish; and regular water-quality management. Clutch size is unrecorded but, given the adult size of around 4–4.5 in SL, is likely in the range of 20–80 eggs.
In the aquarium
Hopliancistrus xavante was, for several years, traded informally under the provisional code L422 (applied to 'Hopliancistrus sp. Rio da Paz'), and a small number of specimens reached European and North American hobbyists before the formal description in 2021. It remains exceptionally rare in the trade, with no keeper records logged on PlanetCatfish.
All Hopliancistrus are rheophilic — adapted to life in strong current over rocky substrates — and perform poorly in the still, warm, nutrient-rich conditions often found in community display tanks. A dedicated setup modelled on an Xingu tributary would serve the species best: temperatures of 77–82 °F, pH 6.2–7.0, very low hardness (conductivity below 100 µS/cm), and strong water movement delivered by a powerful powerhead or wavemaker. High dissolved oxygen is essential; surface agitation and a well-rated external filter are non-negotiable.
Hardscape should consist of smooth rounded river boulders and cobbles — the natural substrate — supplemented with tight crevices and ceramic tubes of appropriate diameter for shelter and potential spawning. Gravel and fine substrate are generally avoided in the wild habitat. Tankmates should be other Xingu-type rheophilic species, and other loricariids of similar size; aggressive or strongly territorial tankmates risk injury to H. xavante's elaborate cheek odontodes. Sand areas with good circulation allow the fish to rest and forage naturally.
Diet should centre on algae wafers, spirulina discs, and biofilm on textured rockwork, supplemented with blanched vegetables. Overfeeding rich meaty foods has been associated with digestive problems in other Ancistrini.
Conservation
Hopliancistrus xavante has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the date of this article. PlanetCatfish records its IUCN category as 'Not Evaluated'. Given the narrow known distribution — a cluster of upper Xingu tributaries in central Mato Grosso, no larger in total than a few thousand square kilometres — and the ongoing threats to Amazonian freshwater habitats, the species warrants evaluation as at minimum Data Deficient or Near Threatened.
The upper Xingu basin is under active pressure from agricultural expansion: Mato Grosso is the leading soybean-producing state in Brazil, and the BR-158 highway corridor that bisects the region has accelerated deforestation and riparian degradation in the past two decades. Small hydroelectric power plants (PCHs) on upper Xingu tributaries — including the very Paranatinga 2 coffeudam where the holotype was collected — have locally altered hydrology, sedimentation, and substrate conditions in the rocky stream habitats that Hopliancistrus requires.
Brazil's protected area network covers some of the upper Xingu — notably the Xingu Indigenous Territory (Terra Indígena do Xingu), one of the world's largest indigenous-protected forest areas — and Indigenous land management has historically been the most effective conservation tool for upper-Xingu biodiversity. The species is named after the Xavante people, a separate group whose traditional territory in eastern Mato Grosso overlaps with the headwaters of the Rio Culuene.
