Taxonomy & naming
This is an undescribed form: no scientific name, authority or type material stands behind it, and its identity and range are not documented in the sources the atlas uses. L471 is an L-number, the coding system DATZ magazine began in 1988 for imported loricariids that could not be identified. Dan's Fish lists it as the L471 mini snowball pleco with a natural range of the Orinoco River, Venezuela. Dan's Fish says its broodstock came from Ingo Seidel and that Hans-Georg Evers inspected the breeder's fish and confirmed them as the true L471. These are the seller's statements.
Morphology
The trade name suggests a snowball pattern of pale spots. Dan's Fish gives no further description. Hypancistrus are small, compact, patterned plecos (genus-level).
Habitat
Dan's Fish gives the Orinoco River in Venezuela. Hypancistrus occur in rocky parts of South American rivers (genus-level).
Feeding
Hypancistrus are generally given meaty foods in the aquarium in addition to some vegetable matter (genus-level); this form's diet is not documented.
Mating
Hypancistrus are cave spawners in which the male guards the clutch (genus-level). Spawning of this form is not described.
Breeding
Dan's Fish sells it as aquarium bred and raised, from the broodstock it names above.
In the aquarium
Dan's Fish lists shipped fish at 1 to 1.5 inches (about 1–1.5 in) and an adult size of around 2.5 to 3 inches (about 2.5–3 in). It adds that its fish appear to reach 3 to 3.5 inches (about 3–3.5 in), not the 2.4 inches (about 2.5 in) commonly reported, and says several pleco experts and breeders have confirmed this. These are seller figures.
Conservation
No IUCN assessment exists for this undescribed form. Its range and numbers are not documented, so its conservation status cannot be stated.
