Taxonomy & naming
No scientific name stands behind L070. The code belongs to the L-number system started by the German magazine DATZ in 1988 for imported loricariids that could not yet be identified, and a form carrying only a code has no authority and no type specimens. The L-Wels registry lists it as Hypancistrus sp. "L 70" and PlanetCatfish as Hypancistrus sp. (L070); neither file groups it with any other code. The German trade name is Zombie-Harnischwels, matching the English Zombie pleco. The registry's literature list cites the Welsatlas 2 (2005), Ingo Seidel's Hypancistrus Fibel (2010) and the Miniatlas L-Welse (2005).
Morphology
L070 is given as about 6.5 in total length. Colour, pattern and other diagnostic characters are not described, and the name Zombie is a trade label, not a description. The one pointer toward identity is the registry's list of similar catfishes, which names a Hypancistrus form known as "Suriname". As a loricariid, L070 carries bony plates over the body and small tooth-like odontodes on the plates and fins.
Habitat
The Rio Tapajós near Santarém, Pará, Brazil, is the registry's locality for L070, and it places the river in the Amazon system. The water is classed as clearwater. Habitat place and substrate are not recorded for this form, and neither are depth, current or field measurements of temperature and pH. The locality and the water type are the whole of the wild-habitat record.
Feeding
The registry classes L070 as an omnivore (Allesfresser) and lists plant-eating as not known, so whether it eats aquarium plants is not recorded. Keepers working from that class offer sinking pellets and wafers, frozen foods and a little vegetable matter. The wild diet is unrecorded, so these are aquarium suggestions, not field findings.
Mating
Sexing is described only at genus level, and the registry marks it so: in Hypancistrus the male has a broader head, a slimmer waist, stronger pectoral-fin rays and more strongly developed odontodes. No courtship behaviour is recorded for L070 specifically. The genus-typical pattern is a cave in which the male guards the eggs and then the larvae, and the registry lists caves as standard for the genus.
Breeding
Breeding of L070 in aquaria is on record only as a status: the registry notes it as bred repeatedly, without naming a source or giving details. Clutch size, the length of the incubation period and fry development are not recorded. The only outline is the genus-typical cave-spawning pattern, a general description and not an account of how L070 itself spawns.
In the aquarium
Registry guidance for L070 is a temperature of 79–84 °F and pH 5.0–7.0 in a tank with a recommended length of 39.5 in. These are aquarium figures, not field data. Small groups are recommended, though a single fish is possible. As with other Hypancistrus, clean, well-oxygenated water with current, plus caves or rock cover, suits the fish. Territorial behaviour toward other plecos is common.
Conservation
Nothing about the wild population of L070 is on record. The IUCN Red List has not evaluated the form (Not Evaluated), and an undescribed form cannot be assessed until it has a name. The registry records it as not on Brazil's 2012 positive list and not on Brazil's 2020 negative list. More generally, collection for the trade and river engineering affect the habitats of some L-number fishes.
