Taxonomy & naming
L178 is a DATZ L-number, a trade code from the system begun in 1988 for imported loricariids not yet identified, so the form has no describing authority and no type specimens. The registry lists it as Lasiancistrus sp. "L 178" and PlanetCatfish as Lasiancistrus sp. (L178); neither gives a second code. Its trade names are Red Fin Lasiancistrus and, in German, Tocantins-Deltaschwanzwels (Tocantins delta-tail catfish). The described Lasiancistrus heteracanthus is listed as a similar fish, which marks a resemblance rather than an identification. The literature cited is Welsatlas 2 and the Miniatlas L-Welse (both 2005).
Morphology
The registry gives about 6 in total length but no description of pattern or body shape, so the diagnostic characters of L178 are not on record. The trade name Red fin Lasiancistrus suggests red fins, but the registry does not describe them; a formal description would settle how the form differs from Lasiancistrus heteracanthus, the one similar fish named.
Habitat
The registry places L178 in the Ribeirão Lajeado, also written Rio Lajeado or Rio Lageado, in Maranhão, Brazil, with the river system given as the Rio Tocantins, flowing into the Rio Pará. Water type, habitat place and substrate are not on record.
Feeding
The registry classes L178 as a herbivore and answers yes to plant eating. In the aquarium that points to vegetable foods: blanched vegetables, plant-based pellets and wafers, and surfaces where algae can grow. No field diet data are on record for the Lajeado fish.
Mating
The registry's sexing note is a genus-level statement for Lasiancistrus: body shape and the growth of odontodes are the characters to look at. Lasiancistrus are typically cave spawners in which the male guards the eggs and larvae in the cave, though the registry attaches no cave requirement to this form. Nothing specific to L178 is recorded.
Breeding
No aquarium breeding is recorded for L178, and clutch size, spawning site and rearing of the young are undocumented.
In the aquarium
The registry's keeping range is 77–84 °F and pH 5.5–7.5, with a recommended tank length of 39.5 in; these are aquarium figures, not field measurements. It recommends small groups and allows a single fish. Clean, well-oxygenated water with caves or wood cover suits plecos of this genus, and territorial behaviour toward other plecos is common.
Conservation
L178 is Not Evaluated on the IUCN Red List; an undescribed form cannot be assessed until it is named. The registry records it as not on Brazil's 2012 positive list of species cleared for ornamental export and not on the 2020 negative list. Collection for the trade and river engineering affect some L-number habitats in general, but nothing specific is on record for the Lajeado population.
