Otocinclus flexilis — the Peppered Oto — is one of the largest and most ecologically unusual members of its genus: a temperate species from the lower Paraná–Uruguay–La Plata system that tolerates near-freezing winter temperatures, mimics the Peppered Cory (Corydoras paleatus) well enough to fool both predators and the Corys themselves, and schools with its lookalike model in a partnership that benefits both participants. It is also, frankly, one of the least well understood small loricariids in the hobby, which makes it all the more rewarding to work with seriously.

Taxonomy & naming

Otocinclus flexilis was described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1894 in the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society (volume 33, pages 84–108, plate 8, figures 13–13b), from type material collected at the Rio Jacuhy (= Jacuí), Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Otocinclus flexilis Cope, 1894 as the valid combination; the synonyms Macrotocinclus flexilis and Otocinclus fimbriatus are both superseded. The placement under Macrotocinclus reflects an older generic arrangement that has been abandoned in modern loricariid systematics.

The genus Otocinclus Cope, 1871 currently contains around 19 valid species. It belongs to the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae of Loricariidae (Armbruster, 2004), a group of small to very small loricariids sometimes called 'dwarf suckers' or 'otos'. A major revision by Lehmann, Mayer, and Reis (2010) in Neotropical Ichthyology re-examined species-level relationships within the genus, re-validating Otocinclus arnoldi and rearranging several other taxa; O. flexilis was confirmed as a valid species distinct from similar La Plata basin otocinclines.

No L-number or LDA-number has been assigned to O. flexilis in the hobby registration system; it circulates under its scientific name and the common name Peppered Oto, a name it shares with the appearance-matching Corydoras paleatus.

Morphology

At a maximum of approximately 2 in standard length (SL), O. flexilis is among the largest species of Otocinclus — most congeners cap out below 1.5 in SL. The body is slender and elongate, with the compressed, cigar-shaped profile characteristic of the genus. The scute rows are reduced compared with larger loricariids; the head is relatively broad, with a pair of enlarged lateral-line pores on the snout that give the genus its name (Greek ous/oto, 'ear'; Latin cinclus, 'lattice-work').

Coloration is the basis for the 'Peppered' name and the mimicry relationship: the dorsal surface is brownish-grey with a dense scattering of dark spots and dashes — a pattern that closely parallels the colouration of the co-occurring Corydoras paleatus. A broad, pale lateral stripe runs the length of the body from snout to caudal peduncle, flanked above and below by darker tones. The fins are spotted or barred. A distinctive ocular diverticulum — a small, whitish lobe at the pupil margin — is visible in live specimens and may function as an intraspecific recognition signal, helping O. flexilis distinguish genuine Corydoras models from conspecifics. Sexual dimorphism is expressed through body width: females are noticeably broader than males when viewed from above, especially when gravid. The male's genital papilla is small and pointed; the female's is larger and more broadly rounded.

Habitat

Otocinclus flexilis occupies the lower portions of the La Plata drainage system: the Rio Paraná (middle and lower sections), the Rio Uruguay, the Rio Paraguay, and the La Plata estuary proper, with the type locality in the Rio Jacuí system of Rio Grande do Sul. This distribution spans southern Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and north-eastern Argentina — a temperate to subtropical zone notable for its pronounced seasonal temperature variation.

Field data (Norén, 2009, PlanetCatfish CotM) record summer temperatures of 75–81 °F in the home waters, dropping to near 32 °F in winter — a thermal amplitude that no other regularly traded otocinclus approaches. Water chemistry is variable across the range: conductivity of 60–150 µS/cm and pH 6.0–7.5 are typical, reflecting the mixed geology of the La Plata catchment. The microhabitat is characteristically shallow, densely vegetated marginal zones — beds of aquatic macrophytes, riparian grasses, and submerged roots where the fish graze on the periphyton coating plant stems and leaves and where they find refuge from predators among their Corydoras models.

Feeding

Otocinclus flexilis is a periphyton grazer, using its oral disc to rasp thin films of algae, bacteria, diatoms, and biofilm from plant surfaces, submerged rocks, glass, and broad-leaved aquatic vegetation. This feeding mode is shared across the genus, though individual species differ in preferred substrate and algal preferences. The trophic level is very low (approximately 2.0), consistent with a diet dominated by primary producers and microorganisms rather than animal matter.

In the aquarium, O. flexilis presents the characteristic challenge of the genus: newly imported specimens are often emaciated from the stress of collection and transport, and many die within weeks because they fail to locate adequate food. Established green algae on mature tank glass and plant leaves is the best bridging substrate; sinking algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched green vegetables (courgette, spinach, cucumber) should be offered from the outset. High-protein foods are reportedly harmful to the digestive system of long-term captives. Interestingly, O. flexilis appears to be more generalist than some congeners regarding green vegetables: Norén (2009) notes that 'like most Otos they will not eat vegetables until they start to decompose, so you may have to leave those slices of zucchini or brussel sprouts in the water for a few days'.

Mating

The mating ecology of O. flexilis is intertwined with its mimicry relationship with Corydoras paleatus. In the wild and in aquaria, the two species school together; Norén (2009) observed that Corydoras appear genuinely deceived by the Otos — following them around, air-gulping synchronously with them, and even making spawning approaches toward them. The Otos, by contrast, appear to distinguish conspecifics from their models, likely aided by the ocular diverticulum.

Within the mixed school, the Otos benefit from both predator-dilution and the protection conveyed by sharing a school with the genuinely spine-bearing, toxin-secreting Corydoras. Breeding attempts in captivity have been rare; Norén notes only a single documented aquarium spawning, which occurred coincidentally in the presence of breeding Corydoras paleatus — suggesting that spawning cues may be tied to the presence of the model species. The natural spawning season is inferred to be spring in the southern hemisphere (September–November), tied to warming temperatures after winter; an Argentine report cited by Norén records spawning among aquatic vegetation when temperature reaches approximately 57 °F.

Breeding

Otocinclus flexilis follows the egg-scattering or plant-surface adhesive spawning mode typical of the genus. No PlanetCatfish breeding report exists for the species as of mid-2026, and documented aquarium successes are extremely scarce in the literature — in contrast to the more frequently bred O. vittatus and O. macrospilus. The single confirmed captive spawning occurred accidentally, without intentional conditioning, in a community tank that also housed spawning C. paleatus.

The presumed reproductive pattern, extrapolated from related Otocinclus species with documented breeding: eggs are deposited singly or in small clusters on broad plant leaves, glass walls, or fine-leaved plant surfaces; they are pale and moderately adhesive; parents do not guard the spawn. Incubation lasts approximately 72–96 hours at 68–75 °F. Fry are minute at hatching and require a layer of biofilm and green algae from the start; provision of infusoria or commercially prepared fry foods is necessary in a newly established tank. The temperate seasonal cue — a gradual temperature drop to 57–61 °F over several weeks in winter, followed by spring warming — is the most plausible trigger for conditioning and spawning attempts.

In the aquarium

Otocinclus flexilis is not frequently available in the mainstream ornamental trade, where the much more abundant O. vittatus and its relatives dominate under the generic label 'otocinclus' or 'oto catfish'. Keepers seeking it specifically will need to source it through specialist suppliers or European hobbyist networks that distinguish between La Plata and Amazonian otocinclus. When obtained, it is a highly rewarding species — more outgoing than many otos when kept with Corydoras paleatus, active during the day, and tolerant of a much wider temperature range than any Amazonian otocinclus.

The cold tolerance is the defining husbandry characteristic: O. flexilis can be maintained at 61–77 °F year-round, and does well in cool temperate indoor rooms without supplemental heating in mild climates. A seasonal temperature reduction to 61–64 °F for two to three months in winter mimics natural conditions and may condition the fish for breeding the following spring. Standard parameters are pH 6.0–7.5, conductivity 60–300 µS/cm, and soft to moderately hard water.

A group of at least five individuals is strongly recommended; the species is notably more confident and active in groups, and ideally in the company of C. paleatus. A well-planted tank of 15–20 US gal minimum is appropriate for a group of five to eight, with abundant broad-leaved plants (Echinodorus, Anubias, Sagittaria) for grazing and refugia. The fish are peaceful with all non-aggressive species and present no threat to plants or other occupants.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Otocinclus flexilis as Least Concern in 2018, reflecting a wide range across the La Plata system and no identified declines sufficient to meet threatened-category thresholds. The species appears relatively tolerant of the modified conditions prevalent in much of its range — the lower Paraná, Paraguay, and Uruguay river systems have been substantially altered by agriculture, dredging, and partial impoundment.

The La Plata drainage is nonetheless under increasing pressure from agricultural runoff (particularly pesticides from the intensive soy and maize belt), riparian vegetation loss that destroys the marginal habitat on which the species depends, and climate change projections that forecast reduced winter cold events in subtropical South America — potentially disrupting the thermal cues that regulate reproduction in this cold-adapted species. Captive breeding, while rarely achieved, would reduce any future collection pressure; the species is not currently a major trade item, and wild-caught imports are taken primarily as bycatch alongside more commercially significant otocinclines.
